    Scalable computing for earth observation - Application on Sea Ice analysis

    In recent years, Deep learning (DL) networks have shown considerable improvements and have become a preferred methodology in many different applications. These networks have outperformed other classical techniques, particularly in large data settings. In earth observation from the satellite field, for example, DL algorithms have demonstrated the ability to learn complicated nonlinear relationships in input data accurately. Thus, it contributed to advancement in this field. However, the training process of these networks has heavy computational overheads. The reason is two-fold: The sizable complexity of these networks and the high number of training samples needed to learn all parameters comprising these architectures. Although the quantity of training data enhances the accuracy of the trained models in general, the computational cost may restrict the amount of analysis that can be done. This issue is particularly critical in satellite remote sensing, where a myriad of satellites generate an enormous amount of data daily, and acquiring in-situ ground truth for building a large training dataset is a fundamental prerequisite. This dissertation considers various aspects of deep learning based sea ice monitoring from SAR data. In this application, labeling data is very costly and time-consuming. Also, in some cases, it is not even achievable due to challenges in establishing the required domain knowledge, specifically when it comes to monitoring Arctic Sea ice with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which is the application domain of this thesis. Because the Arctic is remote, has long dark seasons, and has a very dynamic weather system, the collection of reliable in-situ data is very demanding. In addition to the challenges of interpreting SAR data of sea ice, this issue makes SAR-based sea ice analysis with DL networks a complicated process. We propose novel DL methods to cope with the problems of scarce training data and address the computational cost of the training process. We analyze DL network capabilities based on self-designed architectures and learn strategies, such as transfer learning for sea ice classification. We also address the scarcity of training data by proposing a novel deep semi-supervised learning method based on SAR data for incorporating unlabeled data information into the training process. Finally, a new distributed DL method that can be used in a semi-supervised manner is proposed to address the computational complexity of deep neural network training

    PHM survey: implementation of signal processing methods for monitoring bearings and gearboxes

    The reliability and safety of industrial equipments are one of the main objectives of companies to remain competitive in sectors that are more and more exigent in terms of cost and security. Thus, an unexpected shutdown can lead to physical injury as well as economic consequences. This paper aims to show the emergence of the Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) concept in the industry and to describe how it comes to complement the different maintenance strategies. It describes the benefits to be expected by the implementation of signal processing, diagnostic and prognostic methods in health-monitoring. More specifically, this paper provides a state of the art of existing signal processing techniques that can be used in the PHM strategy. This paper allows showing the diversity of possible techniques and choosing among them the one that will define a framework for industrials to monitor sensitive components like bearings and gearboxes

    Ubiquitous Integration and Temporal Synchronisation (UbilTS) framework : a solution for building complex multimodal data capture and interactive systems

    Contemporary Data Capture and Interactive Systems (DCIS) systems are tied in with various technical complexities such as multimodal data types, diverse hardware and software components, time synchronisation issues and distributed deployment configurations. Building these systems is inherently difficult and requires addressing of these complexities before the intended and purposeful functionalities can be attained. The technical issues are often common and similar among diverse applications. This thesis presents the Ubiquitous Integration and Temporal Synchronisation (UbiITS) framework, a generic solution to address the technical complexities in building DCISs. The proposed solution is an abstract software framework that can be extended and customised to any application requirements. UbiITS includes all fundamental software components, techniques, system level layer abstractions and reference architecture as a collection to enable the systematic construction of complex DCISs. This work details four case studies to showcase the versatility and extensibility of UbiITS framework’s functionalities and demonstrate how it was employed to successfully solve a range of technical requirements. In each case UbiITS operated as the core element of each application. Additionally, these case studies are novel systems by themselves in each of their domains. Longstanding technical issues such as flexibly integrating and interoperating multimodal tools, precise time synchronisation, etc., were resolved in each application by employing UbiITS. The framework enabled establishing a functional system infrastructure in these cases, essentially opening up new lines of research in each discipline where these research approaches would not have been possible without the infrastructure provided by the framework. The thesis further presents a sample implementation of the framework on a device firmware exhibiting its capability to be directly implemented on a hardware platform.     Neuromorphic stereo vision: A survey of bio-inspired sensors and algorithms

    Any visual sensor, whether artificial or biological, maps the 3D-world on a 2D-representation. The missing dimension is depth and most species use stereo vision to recover it. Stereo vision implies multiple perspectives and matching, hence it obtains depth from a pair of images. Algorithms for stereo vision are also used prosperously in robotics. Although, biological systems seem to compute disparities effortless, artificial methods suffer from high energy demands and latency. The crucial part is the correspondence problem; finding the matching points of two images. The development of event-based cameras, inspired by the retina, enables the exploitation of an additional physical constraint—time. Due to their asynchronous course of operation, considering the precise occurrence of spikes, Spiking Neural Networks take advantage of this constraint. In this work, we investigate sensors and algorithms for event-based stereo vision leading to more biologically plausible robots. Hereby, we focus mainly on binocular stereo vision

    A novel lip geometry approach for audio-visual speech recognition

    By identifying lip movements and characterizing their associations with speech sounds, the performance of speech recognition systems can be improved, particularly when operating in noisy environments. Various method have been studied by research group around the world to incorporate lip movements into speech recognition in recent years, however exactly how best to incorporate the additional visual information is still not known. This study aims to extend the knowledge of relationships between visual and speech information specifically using lip geometry information due to its robustness to head rotation and the fewer number of features required to represent movement. A new method has been developed to extract lip geometry information, to perform classification and to integrate visual and speech modalities. This thesis makes several contributions. First, this work presents a new method to extract lip geometry features using the combination of a skin colour filter, a border following algorithm and a convex hull approach. The proposed method was found to improve lip shape extraction performance compared to existing approaches. Lip geometry features including height, width, ratio, area, perimeter and various combinations of these features were evaluated to determine which performs best when representing speech in the visual domain. Second, a novel template matching technique able to adapt dynamic differences in the way words are uttered by speakers has been developed, which determines the best fit of an unseen feature signal to those stored in a database template. Third, following on evaluation of integration strategies, a novel method has been developed based on alternative decision fusion strategy, in which the outcome from the visual and speech modality is chosen by measuring the quality of audio based on kurtosis and skewness analysis and driven by white noise confusion. Finally, the performance of the new methods introduced in this work are evaluated using the CUAVE and LUNA-V data corpora under a range of different signal to noise ratio conditions using the NOISEX-92 dataset
