    Scalable Design Space Exploration via Answer Set Programming

    The design of embedded systems is becoming continuously more complex such that the application of efficient high level design methods are crucial for competitive results regarding design time and performance. Recently, advances in Boolean constraint solvers for Answer Set Programming (ASP) allow for easy integration of background theories and more control over the solving process. The goal of this research is to leverage those advances for system level design space exploration while using specialized techniques from electronic design automation that drive new application-originated ideas for multi-objective combinatorial optimization

SEKE2018 will also be dedicated in memory of Professor Lofti Zadeh, a great scholar, pioneer and leader in fuzzy sets theory and soft computing. The conference aims at bringing together experts in software engineering and knowledge engineering to discuss on relevant results in either software engineering or knowledge engineering or both. Special emphasis will be put on the transference of methods between both domains. The theme this year is soft computing in software engineering & knowledge engineering.     AI Methods in Algorithmic Composition: A Comprehensive Survey

    Algorithmic composition is the partial or total automation of the process of music composition by using computers. Since the 1950s, different computational techniques related to Artificial Intelligence have been used for algorithmic composition, including grammatical representations, probabilistic methods, neural networks, symbolic rule-based systems, constraint programming and evolutionary algorithms.     Development and Integration of Geometric and Optimization Algorithms for Packing and Layout Design

    The research work presented in this dissertation focuses on the development and application of optimization and geometric algorithms to packing and layout optimization problems. As part of this research work, a compact packing algorithm, a physically-based shape morphing algorithm, and a general purpose constrained multi-objective optimization algorithm are proposed. The compact packing algorithm is designed to pack three-dimensional free-form objects with full rotational freedom inside an arbitrary enclosure such that the packing efficiency is maximized. The proposed compact packing algorithm can handle objects with holes or cavities and its performance does not degrade significantly with the increase in the complexity of the enclosure or the objects. It outputs the location and orientation of all the objects, the packing sequence, and the packed configuration at the end of the packing operation. An improved layout algorithm that works with arbitrary enclosure geometry is also proposed. Different layout algorithms for the SAE and ISO luggage are proposed that exploit the unique characteristics of the problem under consideration. Several heuristics to improve the performance of the packing algorithm are also proposed. The proposed compact packing algorithm is benchmarked on a wide variety of synthetic and hypothetical problems and is shown to outperform other similar approaches. The physically-based shape morphing algorithm proposed in this dissertation is specifically designed for packing and layout applications, and thus it augments the compact packing algorithm. The proposed shape morphing algorithm is based on a modified mass-spring system which is used to model the morphable object. The shape morphing algorithm mimics a quasi-physical process similar to the inflation/deflation of a balloon filled with air. The morphing algorithm starts with an initial manifold geometry and morphs it to obtain a desired volume such that the obtained geometry does not interfere with the objects surrounding it. Several modifications to the original mass-spring system and to the underlying physics that governs it are proposed to significantly speed-up the shape morphing process. Since the geometry of a morphable object continuously changes during the morphing process, most collision detection algorithms that assume the colliding objects to be rigid cannot be used efficiently. And therefore, a general-purpose surface collision detection algorithm is also proposed that works with deformable objects and does not require any preprocessing. Many industrial design problems such as packing and layout optimization are computationally expensive, and a faster optimization algorithm can reduce the number of iterations (function evaluations) required to find the satisfycing solutions. A new multi-objective optimization algorithm namely Archive-based Micro Genetic Algorithm (AMGA2) is presented in this dissertation. Improved formulation for various operators used by the AMGA2 such as diversity preservation techniques, genetic variation operators, and the selection mechanism are also proposed. The AMGA2 also borrows several concepts from mathematical sciences to improve its performance and benefits from the existing literature in evolutionary optimization. A comprehensive benchmarking and comparison of AMGA2 with other state-of-the-art optimization algorithms on a wide variety of mathematical problems gleaned from literature demonstrates the superior performance of AMGA2. Thus, the research work presented in this dissertation makes contributions to the development and application of optimization and geometric algorithms

    A Hybrid multi-agent architecture and heuristics generation for solving meeting scheduling problem

    Agent-based computing has attracted much attention as a promising technique for application domains that are distributed, complex and heterogeneous. Current research on multi-agent systems (MAS) has become mature enough to be applied as a technology for solving problems in an increasingly wide range of complex applications. The main formal architectures used to describe the relationships between agents in MAS are centralised and distributed architectures. In computational complexity theory, researchers have classified the problems into the followings categories: (i) P problems, (ii) NP problems, (iii) NP-complete problems, and (iv) NP-hard problems. A method for computing the solution to NP-hard problems, using the algorithms and computational power available nowadays in reasonable time frame remains undiscovered. And unfortunately, many practical problems belong to this very class. On the other hand, it is essential that these problems are solved, and the only possibility of doing this is to use approximation techniques. Heuristic solution techniques are an alternative. A heuristic is a strategy that is powerful in general, but not absolutely guaranteed to provide the best (i.e. optimal) solutions or even find a solution. This demands adopting some optimisation techniques such as Evolutionary Algorithms (EA). This research has been undertaken to investigate the feasibility of running computationally intensive algorithms on multi-agent architectures while preserving the ability of small agents to run on small devices, including mobile devices. To achieve this, the present work proposes a new Hybrid Multi-Agent Architecture (HMAA) that generates new heuristics for solving NP-hard problems. This architecture is hybrid because it is "semi-distributed/semi-centralised" architecture where variables and constraints are distributed among small agents exactly as in distributed architectures, but when the small agents become stuck, a centralised control becomes active where the variables are transferred to a super agent, that has a central view of the whole system, and possesses much more computational power and intensive algorithms to generate new heuristics for the small agents, which find optimal solution for the specified problem. This research comes up with the followings: (1) Hybrid Multi-Agent Architecture (HMAA) that generates new heuristic for solving many NP-hard problems. (2) Two frameworks of HMAA have been implemented; search and optimisation frameworks. (3) New SMA meeting scheduling heuristic. (4) New SMA repair strategy for the scheduling process. (5) Small Agent (SMA) that is responsible for meeting scheduling has been developed. (6) “Local Search Programming” (LSP), a new concept for evolutionary approaches, has been introduced. (7) Two types of super-agent (LGP_SUA and LSP_SUA) have been implemented in the HMAA, and two SUAs (local and global optima) have been implemented for each type. (8) A prototype for HMAA has been implemented: this prototype employs the proposed meeting scheduling heuristic with the repair strategy on SMAs, and the four extensive algorithms on SUAs. The results reveal that this architecture is applicable to many different application domains because of its simplicity and efficiency. Its performance was better than many existing meeting scheduling architectures. HMAA can be modified and altered to other types of evolutionary approaches

    Contributions to the mathematical modeling of estimation of distribution algorithms and pseudo-boolean functions

Dado que la mayoría de dichos problemas no pueden ser resueltos mediante una búsqueda exhaustiva, su resolución se aproxima frecuentemente mediante algoritmos heurísticos. Sin embargo, no existe ningún algoritmo que se comporte mejor que el resto de algoritmos para resolver todas las instancias de cualquier problema. Por ello, el objetivo ideal es, dado una instancia de un problema, saber cuál es el algoritmo cuya resoluciones más eficiente. Las dos líneas principales de investigación para lograr dicho objetivo son estudiar las definiciones de los problemas y las posibles instancias que cada problema puede generar y el estudio delos diseños y características de los algoritmos. En esta tesis, se han tratado ambas lineas. Por un lado,hemos estudiado las funciones pseudo-Booleanas y varios problemas binarios específicos. Por otro lado,se ha presentado un modelado matemático para estudiar Algoritmos de Estimación de Distribuciones diseñados para resolver problemas basados en permutaciones. La principal motivación ha sido seguir progresando en este campo para comprender mejor las relaciones entre los Problemas de Optimización Combinatoria y los algoritmos de optimización
