    This thesis explores the deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) on localised maritime events. In particular, it will focus on the deployment of a WSN at sea and estimating what challenges derive from the environment and how they affect communication. This research addresses these challenges through simulation and modelling of communication and environment, evaluating the implications of hardware selection and custom algorithm development. The first part of this thesis consists of the analysis of aspects related to the Medium Access Control layer of the network stack in large-scale networks. These details are commonly hidden from upper layers, thus resulting in misconceptions of real deployment characteristics. Results show that simple solutions have greater advantages when the number of nodes within a cluster increases. The second part considers routing techniques, with focus on energy management and packet delivery. It is shown that, under certain conditions, relaying data can increase energy savings, while at the same time allows a more even distribution of its usage between nodes. The third part describes the development of a custom-made network simulator. It starts by considering realistic radio, channel and interference models to allow a trustworthy simulation of the deployment environment. The MAC and Routing techniques developed thus far are adapted to the simulator in a cross-layer manner. The fourth part consists of adapting the WSN behaviour to the variable weather and topology found in the chosen application scenario. By analysing the algorithms presented in this work, it is possible to find and use the best alternative under any set of environmental conditions.     dissertationA safe and secure transportation system is critical to providing protection to those who employ it. Safety is being increasingly demanded within the transportation system and transportation facilities and services will need to adapt to change to provide it. This dissertation provides innovate methodologies to identify current shortcomings and provide theoretic frameworks for enhancing the safety and security of the transportation network. This dissertation is designed to provide multilevel enhanced safety and security within the transportation network by providing methodologies to identify, monitor, and control major hazards associated within the transportation network. The risks specifically addressed are: (1) enhancing nuclear materials sensor networks to better deter and interdict smugglers, (2) use game theory as an interdiction model to design better sensor networks and forensically track smugglers, (3) incorporate safety into regional transportation planning to provide decision-makers a basis for choosing safety design alternatives, and (4) use a simplified car-following model that can incorporate errors to predict situational-dependent safety effects of distracted driving in an ITS infrastructure to deploy live-saving countermeasures

DOI: 10.3390/data3040067Traffic jams can be avoided by controlling traffic signals according to quickly building congestion with steep gradients on short temporal and small spatial scales. With the rising standards of computational technology, single-board computers, software packages, platforms, and APIs (Application Program Interfaces), it has become relatively easy for developers to create systems for controlling signals and informative systems. Hence, for enhancing the power of Intelligent Transport Systems in automotive telematics, in this study, we used crowdsourced traffic congestion data from Google to adjust traffic light cycle times with a system that is adaptable to congestion. One aim of the system proposed here is to inform drivers about the status of the upcoming traffic light on their route. Since crowdsourced data are used, the system does not entail the high infrastructure cost associated with sensing networks. A full system module-level analysis is presented for implementation. The system proposed is fail-safe against temporal communication failure. Along with a case study for examining congestion levels, generic information processing for the cycle time decision and status delivery system was tested and confirmed to be viable and quick for a restricted prototype model. The information required was delivered correctly over sustained trials, with an average time delay of 1.5 s and a maximum of 3 s.publishersversionpublishe
