Academic Achievement and Peer Tutoring in Mathematics: A Comparison Between Primary and Secondary Education

Peer tutoring in Mathematics has reported academic benefits across many educational levels, from Preschool to Higher Education. However, recent literature reviews and meta-analysis state that students experience higher gains in Primary or Elementary Education (ages 7–12 years) than in secondary education or middle school and high school (ages 13–18 years). This study examined the effects of peer tutoring on students’ mathematics achievement in primary and secondary education under similar settings. 89 students from first, fourth, seventh, and ninth grades participated in the study. The design of this research was quasi-experimental with pretest–posttest without control group. The statistical analysis reported significant improvements for both, Primary and Secondary Education. The comparison between these educational levels showed that there were no significant differences in the increments of the students’ marks. The global effect size reported for the experience was Cohen’s d = 0.78. The main conclusion is that Peer Tutoring in Mathematics reports similar academic benefits for both, Primary and Secondary Education. Future research must be conducted as the superiority of Peer Tutoring in Primary over Secondary Education has yet to be proved in the Mathematics subject

International Students As Peer Tutors: Is It Lawful?

Students enrolled in Principles of Accounting courses might require peer tutoring services.  Accounting Departments (schools) can assist these students by maintaining a list of students offering tutoring services for a fee.  The opportunity to be included in the list of tutors must be offered to all university students, both domestic and foreign.  Universities might be hesitant to maintain such a list in fear of a violation of employment and immigration laws of F-1 international students.  Failure to assist in locating tutors for Principles of Accounting students can be disadvantageous for students needing help, as well as for potential tutors who would welcome extra income and who can benefit from “teaching what they know.”  This paper discusses a system that universities can establish and manage where foreign students can serve as peer tutors and remain within legal requirements of campus employment

Supporting Peer Help and Collaboration in Distributed Workplace Environments

Special Issue on Computer Supported Collaborative LearningIncreasingly, organizations are geographically distributed with activities coordinated and integrated through the use of information technology. Such organizations face constant change and the corresponding need for continual learning and renewal of their workers. In this paper we describe a prototype system called PHelpS (Peer Help System) that facilitates workers in carrying out such "life long learning". PHelpS supports workers as they perform their tasks, offers assistance in finding peer helpers when required, and mediates communication on task-related topics. When a worker runs into difficulty in carrying out a task, PHelpS provides a list of other workers who are ready, willing and able to help him or her. The worker then selects a particular helper with PHelpS supporting the subsequent help interaction. The PHelpS system acts as a facilitator to stimulate learning and collaboration, rather than as a directive agent imposing its perspectives on the workers. In this way PHelpS facilitates the creation of extensive informal peer help networks, where workers help one another with tasks and opens up new research avenues for further exploration of AI-based computer-supported collaborative learning.
