    Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are demanding increasing changes in manufacturing environments. Enterprises are required to constantly redesign their products and continuously reconfigure their manufacturing systems. Traditional approaches to manufacturing systems do not fully satisfy this new situation. Many authors have proposed that artificial intelligence will bring the flexibility and efficiency needed by manufacturing systems. This paper is a review of artificial intelligence techniques used in manufacturing systems. The paper first defines the components of a simplified intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS), the different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to be considered and then shows how these AI techniques are used for the components of IMS

    AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends

    The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques.     Analysis and modeling of flexible manufacturing system (FMS) consists of scheduling of the system and optimization of FMS objectives. Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) scheduling problems become extremely complex when it comes to accommodate frequent variations in the part designs of incoming jobs. This research focuses on scheduling of variety of incoming jobs into the system efficiently and maximizing system utilization and throughput of system where machines are equipped with different tools and tool magazines but multiple machines can be assigned to single operation. Jobs have been scheduled according to shortest processing time (SPT) rule. Shortest processing time (SPT) scheduling rule is simple, fast, and generally a superior rule in terms of minimizing completion time through the system, minimizing the average number of jobs in the system, usually lower in-process inventories (less shop congestion) and downstream idle time (higher resource utilization). Simulation is better than experiment with the real world system because the system as yet does not exist and experimentation with the system is expensive, too time consuming, too dangerous. In this research, Taguchi philosophy and genetic algorithm have been used for optimization. Genetic algorithm (GA) approach is one of the most efficient algorithms that aim at converging and giving optimal solution in a shorter time.     Optimization of Simultaneous Scheduling for Machines and Automated Guided Vehicles Using Fuzzy Genetic Algorithm

    Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) has been introduced by the researchers as an integrated manufacturing environment. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) introduced as the main tool of material handling systems in FMS. While the scheduling of AGVs and machines are highly related; simultaneous scheduling of machines and AGVs has been proposed in the literature. Genetic algorithm (GA) proposed as a robust tool for optimization of scheduling problems. Setting the proper crossover and mutation rates are of vital importance for the performance of the GA. Fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) have been used in the literature to control key parameters of the GA which is addressed as fuzzy GA (FGA). A new application of FGA method in simultaneous scheduling of AGVs and machines is presented. The general GA is modified for the aforementioned application; more over an FLC is developed to control mutation and crossover rates of the GA. The objective of proposed FGA method is to minimize the makespan, production completion time of all jobs that they are produced simultaneously. An optimal sequence of operations is obtained by GA. There is a heuristic algorithm to assign the AGVs to the operations. As the main findings, the performance of GA in simultaneous scheduling of AGVs and machines is enhanced by using proposed method, furthermore a new mutation operator has been proposed. Several experiments have been done to the proposed test cases. The results showed that tournament selection scheme may outperform roulette wheel in this problem. Various combinations of population size and number of generations are compared to each other in terms of their objective function. In large scale problems FGA method may outperforms GA method, while in small and medium problems they have the same performance. The fluctuation of obtained makespan in FGA method is less than GA method which means that it is more probable to find a better solution by FGA rather than GA

For that reason, in this paper two approaches are proposed for the task of intelligent material transport by using a mobile robot. The first approach is based on applying genetic algorithms for optimizing process plans. Optimized process plans are passed to the genetic algorithm for scheduling which generate an optimal job sequence by using minimal makespan as criteria. The second approach uses graph theory for generating paths and neural networks for learning generated paths. The Matlab© software package is used for developing genetic algorithms, manufacturing process simulation, implementing search algorithms and neural network training. The obtained paths are tested by means of the Khepera II mobile robot system within a static laboratory model of manufacturing environment. The experiment results clearly show that an intelligent mobile robot can follow paths generated by using genetic algorithms as well as learn and predict optimal material transport flows thanks to using neural networks. The achieved positioning error of the mobile robot indicates that the conceptual design approach based on the axiomatic design theory can be used for designing the material transport and handling tasks in intelligent manufacturing systems.Pouzdan i efikasan transport materijala je jedan od ključnih zahtjeva koji utječe na povećanje produktivnosti u industriji. Iz tog razloga, u radu su predložena dva pristupa za inteligentan transport materijala korištenjem mobilnog robota. Prvi pristup se zasniva na primjeni genetskih algoritama za optimizaciju tehnoloških procesa. Optimalna putanja se dobiva korištenjem optimalnih tehnoloških procesa i genetskih algoritama za vremensko planiranje, uz minimalno vrijeme kao kriterij. Drugi pristup je temeljen na primjeni teorije grafova za generiranje putanja i neuronskih mreža za učenje generirane putanje. Matlab© softverski paket je korišten za razvoj genetskih algoritama, simulaciju tehnoloških procesa, implementaciju algoritama pretraživanja i obučavanje neuronskih mreža. Dobivene putanje su testirane pomoću Khepera II mobilnog robota u statičkom laboratorijskom modelu tehnološkog okruženja. Eksperimentalni rezultati pokazuju kako inteligentni mobilni robot prati putanje generirane korištenjem genetskih algoritama, kao i da uči i predviđa optimalne tokove materijala zahvaljujući neuronskim mrežama. Ostvarena pogreška pozicioniranja mobilnog robota ukazuje da se koncepcijski pristup baziran na aksiomatskoj teoriji projektiranja može koristiti u projektiranju transporta i manipulacije u inteligentnom tehnološkom sustavu
