    A Markovian jump system approach for the estimation and adaptive diagnosis of decreased power generation in wind farms

    In this study, a Markovian jump model of the power generation system of a wind turbine is proposed and the authors present a closed-loop model-based observer to estimate the faults related to energy losses. The observer is designed through an H∞-based optimisation problem that optimally fixes the trade-off between the observer fault sensitivity and robustness. The fault estimates are then used in data-based decision mechanisms for achieving fault detection and isolation. The performance of the strategy is then ameliorated in a wind farm (WF) level scheme that uses a bank of the aforementioned observers and decision mechanisms. Finally, the proposed approach is tested using a well-known benchmark in the context of WF fault diagnosis

    Fault detection and isolation in a networked multi-vehicle unmanned system

    Recent years have witnessed a strong interest and intensive research activities in the area of networks of autonomous unmanned vehicles such as spacecraft formation flight, unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, automated highway systems and multiple mobile robots. The envisaged networked architecture can provide surpassing performance capabilities and enhanced reliability; however, it requires extending the traditional theories of control, estimation and Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI). One of the many challenges for these systems is development of autonomous cooperative control which can maintain the group behavior and mission performance in the presence of undesirable events such as failures in the vehicles. In order to achieve this goal, the team should have the capability to detect and isolate vehicles faults and reconfigure the cooperative control algorithms to compensate for them. This dissertation deals with the design and development of fault detection and isolation algorithms for a network of unmanned vehicles. Addressing this problem is the main step towards the design of autonomous fault tolerant cooperative control of network of unmanned systems. We first formulate the FDI problem by considering ideal communication channels among the vehicles and solve this problem corresponding to three different architectures, namely centralized, decentralized, and semi-decentralized. The necessary and sufficient solvability conditions for each architecture are also derived based on geometric FDI approach. The effects of large environmental disturbances are subsequently taken into account in the design of FDI algorithms and robust hybrid FDI schemes for both linear and nonlinear systems are developed. Our proposed robust FDI algorithms are applied to a network of unmanned vehicles as well as Almost-Lighter-Than-Air-Vehicle (ALTAV). The effects of communication channels on fault detection and isolation performance are then investigated. A packet erasure channel model is considered for incorporating stochastic packet dropout of communication channels. Combining vehicle dynamics and communication links yields a discrete-time Markovian Jump System (MJS) mathematical model representation. This motivates development of a geometric FDI framework for both discrete-time and continuous-time Markovian jump systems. Our proposed FDI algorithm is then applied to a formation flight of satellites and a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) helicopter problem. Finally, we investigate the problem of fault detection and isolation for time-delay systems as well as linear impulsive systems. The main motivation behind considering these two problems is that our developed geometric framework for Markovian jump systems can readily be applied to other class of systems. Broad classes of time-delay systems, namely, retarded, neutral, distributed and stochastic time-delay systems are investigated in this dissertation and a robust FDI algorithm is developed for each class of these systems. Moreover, it is shown that our proposed FDI algorithms for retarded and stochastic time-delay systems can potentially be applied in an integrated design of FDI/controller for a network of unmanned vehicles. Necessary and sufficient conditions for solvability of the fundamental problem of residual generation for linear impulsive systems are derived to conclude this dissertation

    Adaptive Observer-Based Fault Estimation for Stochastic Markovian Jumping Systems

    This paper studies the adaptive fault estimation problems for stochastic Markovian jump systems (MJSs) with time delays. With the aid of the selected Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, the adaptive fault estimation algorithm based on adaptive observer is proposed to enhance the rapidity and accuracy performance of fault estimation. A sufficient condition on the existence of adaptive observer is presented and proved by means of linear matrix inequalities techniques. The presented results are extended to multiple time-delayed MJSs. Simulation results illustrate that the validity of the proposed adaptive faults estimation algorithms

    A new strategy for integration of fault estimation within fault-tolerant control

The problem of active fault tolerant control (FTC) of dynamical systems involves the process of fault detection and isolation/fault estimation (FDI/FE) used to either make a decision as to when and how to change the control, based on FDI or to compensate the fault in the control system via FE. The combination of the decision-making/estimation and control gives rise to a bi-directional uncertainty in which the modelling and fault uncertainties and disturbances all affect the quality and robustness of the FTC system. This leads to the FTC requirement for an integrated design of the FDI/FE and control system reconfiguration. This paper focuses on the FTC approach using FE and fault compensation within the control system in which the design is achieved by integrating together the FE and FTC controller modules. The FE is based on a modified reduced-/full-order unknown input observer and the FTC system is constructed by sliding mode control using state/output feedback. The integrated design is converted into an observer-based robust control problem solved via H ∞ optimization with a single-step LMI formulation. The performance effectiveness of the proposed integrated design approach is illustrated through studying the control of an uncertain model of a DC motor

    Doctoral Thesis for PhD degree in Industrial and Systems EngineeringIntroduction: This thesis describes a methodology to combine Bayesian control chart and CBM (Condition-Based Maintenance) for developing a new integrated model. In maintenance management, it is a challenging task for decision-maker to conduct an appropriate and accurate decision. Proper and well-performed CBM models are beneficial for maintenance decision making. The integration of Bayesian control chart and CBM is considered as an intelligent model and a suitable strategy for forecasting items failures as well as allow providing an effectiveness maintenance cost. CBM models provides lower inventory costs for spare parts, reduces unplanned outage, and minimize the risk of catastrophic failure, avoiding high penalties associated with losses of production or delays, increasing availability. However, CBM models need new aspects and the integration of new type of information in maintenance modeling that can improve the results. Objective: The thesis aims to develop a new methodology based on Bayesian control chart for predicting failures of item incorporating simultaneously two types of data: key quality control measurement and equipment condition parameters. In other words, the project research questions are directed to give the lower maintenance costs for real process control. Method: The mathematical approach carried out in this study for developing an optimal Condition Based Maintenance policy included the Weibull analysis for verifying the Markov property, Delay time concept used for deterioration modeling and PSO and Monte Carlo simulation. These models are used for finding the upper control limit and the interval monitoring that minimizes the (maintenance) cost function. Result: The main contribution of this thesis is that the proposed model performs better than previous models in which the hypothesis of using simultaneously data about condition equipment parameters and quality control measurements improve the effectiveness of integrated model Bayesian control chart for Condition Based Maintenance.Introdução: Esta tese descreve uma metodologia para combinar Bayesian control chart e CBM (Condition- Based Maintenance) para desenvolver um novo modelo integrado. Na gestão da manutenção, é importante que o decisor possa tomar decisões apropriadas e corretas. Modelos CBM bem concebidos serão muito benéficos nas tomadas de decisão sobre manutenção. A integração dos gráficos de controlo Bayesian e CBM é considerada um modelo inteligente e uma estratégica adequada para prever as falhas de componentes bem como produzir um controlo de custos de manutenção. Os modelos CBM conseguem definir custos de inventário mais baixos para as partes de substituição, reduzem interrupções não planeadas e minimizam o risco de falhas catastróficas, evitando elevadas penalizações associadas a perdas de produção ou atrasos, aumentando a disponibilidade. Contudo, os modelos CBM precisam de alterações e a integração de novos tipos de informação na modelação de manutenção que permitam melhorar os resultados.Objetivos: Esta tese pretende desenvolver uma nova metodologia baseada Bayesian control chart para prever as falhas de partes, incorporando dois tipos de dados: medições-chave de controlo de qualidade e parâmetros de condição do equipamento. Por outras palavras, as questões de investigação são direcionadas para diminuir custos de manutenção no processo de controlo.Métodos: Os modelos matemáticos implementados neste estudo para desenvolver uma política ótima de CBM incluíram a análise de Weibull para verificação da propriedade de Markov, conceito de atraso de tempo para a modelação da deterioração, PSO e simulação de Monte Carlo. Estes modelos são usados para encontrar o limite superior de controlo e o intervalo de monotorização para minimizar a função de custos de manutenção.Resultados: A principal contribuição desta tese é que o modelo proposto melhora os resultados dos modelos anteriores, baseando-se na hipótese de que, usando simultaneamente dados dos parâmetros dos equipamentos e medições de controlo de qualidade.     Fault Detection of Markov Jumping Linear Systems

    In this paper, the fault detection (FD) problems of discrete-time Markov jumping linear systems (MJLSs) are studied. We first focus on the stationary MJLS. The proposed FD system consists of two steps: residual generation and residual evaluation. A new reference model strategy is applied to construct a residual generator, such that it is robust against disturbances and sensitive to system faults. The generated residual signals are then evaluated according to their stochastic properties, and a threshold is computed for detecting the occurrences of faults. The upper bound of the corresponding false alarm rate (FAR) is also given. For the nonstationary MJLS, similar results are also obtained. All the solutions are presented in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical example is used to illustrate the results

    Observer-based fault detection of technical systems over networks

    The introduction of networks into technical systems for facilitating remote data transmission, low complexity in wiring and easy diagnosis and maintenance, raises new challenges in fault detection (FD), such as how to handle network-induced time-varying transmission delays, packet dropouts, quantization errors and bit errors. These factors lead to increasing interest in developing new structures and design schemes for FD of technical systems over networks. In this thesis all network-induced effects are analyzed and modeled systematically at first. By observing the stochastic inheritance of networks, an FD framework of Markov jumping linear systems is presented as a basis for the later developments. Then two observer-based schemes for the purpose of FD over networks with guaranteed false alarm rate (FAR) are proposed: a remote FD system and an FD system of networked control systems (NCSs). The remote FD scheme is for detecting faults in technical systems at a remote site, where system measurements are transmitted via networks. In this scheme, the coding mechanism of communication channels is investigated from the view point of control engineering and new methods are developed for optimal residual generation and evaluation by considering network-induced data loss and corruption. A novel design scheme of FD system is also developed for NCSs, where the technical system is networked, i.e. controllers, actuators and sensors are connected with communication channels. In this scheme, network-induced transmission delays, packet dropouts, quantization errors are taken into account for the design of the optimal FD system. The linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and convex optimization techniques are applied for assisting the design procedures. The developed schemes are tested with numerical examples and implemented in a three-tank system benchmark, and their superiority to existing solutions is demonstrated. Existing restrictions are overcome and new observer-based FD schemes over networks are introduced having the following characteristics: (1) the residual generators in both schemes are optimal in the sense of achieving the best trade-off between sensitivity to system faults and robustness against system disturbances and network-induced effects; (2) the proposed schemes can provide reliability information of rising fault alarms by analyzing the mean and variance of residual signals. Such information is very useful for practical applications in industries; (3) the design of residual generators and computation of thresholds can be efficiently solved by means of existing LMI-solvers
