    Generic Drone Control Platform for Autonomous Capture of Cinema Scenes

    The movie industry has been using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as a new tool to produce more and more complex and aesthetic camera shots. However, the shooting process currently rely on manual control of the drones which makes it difficult and sometimes inconvenient to work with. In this paper we address the lack of autonomous system to operate generic rotary-wing drones for shooting purposes. We propose a global control architecture based on a high-level generic API used by many UAV. Our solution integrates a compound and coupled model of a generic rotary-wing drone and a Full State Feedback strategy. To address the specific task of capturing cinema scenes, we combine the control architecture with an automatic camera path planning approach that encompasses cinematographic techniques. The possibilities offered by our system are demonstrated through a series of experiments

    An Innovative Cloud-based Supervision System for the Integration of RPAS in Urban Environments

    This paper proposes the outline of a Cloud-based supervision system for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), which are operating in urban environments. The novelty of this proposed concept is dual: (i) a Cloud-based supervision system focusing on safety and robustness, (ii) the definition of technical requirements allowing the RPAS to fly over urban areas, as a possible evolution of drone use in future smart cities. A new concept for the regulatory issues is also proposed, compared with existing worldwide regulations. The Cloud framework is intended to be an automated system for path planning and control of RPAS flying under its coverage, and not limited to conventional remote control as if supervised by a human pilot. Future works will be based on the experimental validation of the proposed concept in an urban area of Turin (Italy)

    Innovative Tools For Planning, Analysis, and Management of UAV Photogrammetric Surveys

    The Unmanned Aerial System (UAV) is widely used in the photogrammetric surveys both for structures and small areas. The geomatics approach, for the several applications where the 3D modeling is required, focuses the attention on the metric quality of the final products of the survey. As widely known, the quality of results derives from the quality of images acquisition phase, which needs an accurate planning phase. Actually, the planning phase is typically managed using dedicated tools, adapted from the traditional aerial-photogrammetric flight plan. Unfortunately, UAV flight has features completely different from the traditional one, hence the use of UAV for photogrammetric applications today requires a growth in the planning knowledge. The basic idea of the present research work is to provide a tool for planning a photogrammetric survey with UAV, called \u201cUnmanned Photogrammetric Office\u201d (U.Ph.O.), that considers the morphology of the object, the effective visibility of its surface, in the respect of the metric precisions. The usual planning tools require the classical parameters of a photogrammetric planning: flight distance from the surface, images overlaps and geometric parameters of the camera. The created \u201cOffice suite\u201d U.Ph.O. allows a realistic planning of a photogrammetric survey, requiring additionally an approximate knowledge of the Digital Surface Model (DSM) and the attitude parameters, potentially changing along the route. The planning products will be the realistic overlapping of the images, the Ground Sample Distance (GSD) and the precision on each pixel taking into account the real geometry. The different tested procedures, the solution proposed to estimates the realistic precisions in the particular case of UAV surveys and the obtained results, are described in this thesis work, with an overview on the recently development of UAV surveys and technologies related to them

    Chapter Operational Validation of Search and Rescue Robots

    This chapter describes how the different ICARUS unmanned search and rescue tools have been evaluated and validated using operational benchmarking techniques. Two large‐scale simulated disaster scenarios were organized: a simulated shipwreck and an earthquake response scenario. Next to these simulated response scenarios, where ICARUS tools were deployed in tight interaction with real end users, ICARUS tools also participated to a real relief, embedded in a team of end users for a flood response mission. These validation trials allow us to conclude that the ICARUS tools fulfil the user requirements and goals set up at the beginning of the project

    Cooperative Agricultural Operations of Aerial and Ground Unmanned Vehicles

    Precision agriculture comprises a set of technologies that combines sensors, information systems, enhanced machinery, and informed management to optimize production by accounting for variability and uncertainties within agricultural systems. Autonomous ground and aerial vehicle can lead to favorable improvements in management by performing in-field tasks in a time-effective way. Greater benefits can be achieved by allowing cooperation and collaborative action among Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs). A multi-phase approach is here proposed, where each unmanned vehicle involved has been conceived and will be designed to implement innovative solutions for automated navigation and infield operations within a complex irregular and unstructured scenario as vineyards in sloped terrains
