    Mathematical Models and Algorithms for Network Flow Problems Arising in Wireless Sensor Network Applications

    We examine multiple variations on two classical network flow problems, the maximum flow and minimum-cost flow problems. These two problems are well-studied within the optimization community, and many models and algorithms have been presented for their solution. Due to the unique characteristics of the problems we consider, existing approaches cannot be directly applied. The problem variations we examine commonly arise in wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. A WSN consists of a set of sensors and collection sinks that gather and analyze environmental conditions. In addition to providing a taxonomy of relevant literature, we present mathematical programming models and algorithms for solving such problems. First, we consider a variation of the maximum flow problem having node-capacity restrictions. As an alternative to solving a single linear programming (LP) model, we present two alternative solution techniques. The first iteratively solves two smaller auxiliary LP models, and the second is a heuristic approach that avoids solving any LP. We also examine a variation of the maximum flow problem having semicontinuous restrictions that requires the flow, if positive, on any path to be greater than or equal to a minimum threshold. To avoid solving a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model, we present a branch-and-price algorithm that significantly improves the computational time required to solve the problem. Finally, we study two dynamic network flow problems that arise in wireless sensor networks under non-simultaneous flow assumptions. We first consider a dynamic maximum flow problem that requires an arc to transmit a minimum amount of flow each time it begins transmission. We present an MIP for solving this problem along with a heuristic algorithm for its solution. Additionally, we study a dynamic minimum-cost flow problem, in which an additional cost is incurred each time an arc begins transmission. In addition to an MIP, we present an exact algorithm that iteratively solves a relaxed version of the MIP until an optimal solution is found

    PhDThe problem of energy-efficient, reliable, accurate and self-organized target tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is considered for sensor nodes with limited physical resources and abrupt manoeuvring mobile targets. A biologically inspired, adaptive multi-sensor scheme is proposed for collaborative Single Target Tracking (STT) and Multi-Target Tracking (MTT). Behavioural data obtained while tracking the targets including the targets’ previous locations is recorded as metadata to compute the target sampling interval, target importance and local monitoring interval so that tracking continuity and energy-efficiency are improved. The subsequent sensor groups that track the targets are selected proactively according to the information associated with the predicted target location probability such that the overall tracking performance is optimized or nearly-optimized. One sensor node from each of the selected groups is elected as a main node for management operations so that energy efficiency and load balancing are improved. A decision algorithm is proposed to allow the “conflict” nodes that are located in the sensing areas of more than one target at the same time to decide their preferred target according to the target importance and the distance to the target. A tracking recovery mechanism is developed to provide the tracking reliability in the event of target loss. The problem of task mapping and scheduling in WSNs is also considered. A Biological Independent Task Allocation (BITA) algorithm and a Biological Task Mapping and Scheduling (BTMS) algorithm are developed to execute an application using a group of sensor nodes. BITA, BTMS and the functional specialization of the sensor groups in target tracking are all inspired from biological behaviours of differentiation in zygote formation. Simulation results show that compared with other well-known schemes, the proposed tracking, task mapping and scheduling schemes can provide a significant improvement in energy-efficiency and computational time, whilst maintaining acceptable accuracy and seamless tracking, even with abrupt manoeuvring targets.Queen Mary university of London full Scholarshi

    The Coverage Problem in Video-Based Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

    Wireless sensor networks typically consist of a great number of tiny low-cost electronic devices with limited sensing and computing capabilities which cooperatively communicate to collect some kind of information from an area of interest. When wireless nodes of such networks are equipped with a low-power camera, visual data can be retrieved, facilitating a new set of novel applications. The nature of video-based wireless sensor networks demands new algorithms and solutions, since traditional wireless sensor networks approaches are not feasible or even efficient for that specialized communication scenario. The coverage problem is a crucial issue of wireless sensor networks, requiring specific solutions when video-based sensors are employed. In this paper, it is surveyed the state of the art of this particular issue, regarding strategies, algorithms and general computational solutions. Open research areas are also discussed, envisaging promising investigation considering coverage in video-based wireless sensor networks

    Data and resource management in wireless networks via data compression, GPS-free dissemination, and learning

    “This research proposes several innovative approaches to collect data efficiently from large scale WSNs. First, a Z-compression algorithm has been proposed which exploits the temporal locality of the multi-dimensional sensing data and adapts the Z-order encoding algorithm to map multi-dimensional data to a one-dimensional data stream. The extended version of Z-compression adapts itself to working in low power WSNs running under low power listening (LPL) mode, and comprehensively analyzes its performance compressing both real-world and synthetic datasets. Second, it proposed an efficient geospatial based data collection scheme for IoTs that reduces redundant rebroadcast of up to 95% by only collecting the data of interest. As most of the low-cost wireless sensors won’t be equipped with a GPS module, the virtual coordinates are used to estimate the locations. The proposed work utilizes the anchor-based virtual coordinate system and DV-Hop (Distance vector of hops to anchors) to estimate the relative location of nodes to anchors. Also, it uses circle and hyperbola constraints to encode the position of interest (POI) and any user-defined trajectory into a data request message which allows only the sensors in the POI and routing trajectory to collect and route. It also provides location anonymity by avoiding using and transmitting GPS location information. This has been extended also for heterogeneous WSNs and refined the encoding algorithm by replacing the circle constraints with the ellipse constraints. Last, it proposes a framework that predicts the trajectory of the moving object using a Sequence-to-Sequence learning (Seq2Seq) model and only wakes-up the sensors that fall within the predicted trajectory of the moving object with a specially designed control packet. It reduces the computation time of encoding geospatial trajectory by more than 90% and preserves the location anonymity for the local edge servers”--Abstract, page iv

    An Energy-Efficient Distributed Algorithm for k-Coverage Problem in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently achieved a great deal of attention due to its numerous attractive applications in many different fields. Sensors and WSNs possesses a number of special characteristics that make them very promising in many applications, but also put on them lots of constraints that make issues in sensor network particularly difficult. These issues may include topology control, routing, coverage, security, and data management. In this thesis, we focus our attention on the coverage problem. Firstly, we define the Sensor Energy-efficient Scheduling for k-coverage (SESK) problem. We then solve it by proposing a novel, completely localized and distributed scheduling approach, naming Distributed Energy-efficient Scheduling for k-coverage (DESK) such that the energy consumption among all the sensors is balanced, and the network lifetime is maximized while still satisfying the k-coverage requirement.     Architecture for Multi-Technology Real-Time Location Systems

    [Abstract]The rising popularity of location-based services has prompted considerable research in the field of indoor location systems. Since there is no single technology to support these systems, it is necessary to consider the fusion of the information coming from heterogeneous sensors. This paper presents a software architecture designed for a hybrid location system where we can merge information from multiple sensor technologies. The architecture was designed to be used by different kinds of actors independently and with mutual transparency: hardware administrators, algorithm developers and user applications. The paper presents the architecture design, work-flow, case study examples and some results to show how different technologies can be exploited to obtain a good estimation of a target position.[Resumen]El aumento de la popularidad de servicios localización-basados ha llevado a una investigación considerable en el campo de los sistemas de localización en interiores.     Optimal Mission Planning of Autonomous Mobile Agents for Applications in Microgrids, Sensor Networks, and Military Reconnaissance

    As technology advances, the use of collaborative autonomous mobile systems for various applications will become evermore prevalent. One interesting application of these multi-agent systems is for autonomous mobile microgrids. These systems will play an increasingly important role in applications such as military special operations for mobile ad-hoc power infrastructures and for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. In performing these operations with these autonomous energy assets, there is a crucial need to optimize their functionality according to their specific application and mission. Challenges arise in determining mission characteristics such as how each resource should operate, when, where, and for how long. This thesis explores solutions in determining optimal mission plans around the applications of autonomous mobile microgrids and resource scheduling with UGVs and UAVs. Optimal network connections, energy asset locations, and cabling trajectories are determined in the mobile microgrid application. The resource scheduling applications investigate the use of a UGV to recharge wireless sensors in a wireless sensor network. Optimal recharging of mobile distributed UAVs performing reconnaissance missions is also explored. With genetic algorithm solution approaches, the results show the proposed methods can provide reasonable a-priori mission plans, considering the applied constraints and objective functions in each application. The contributions of this thesis are: (1) The development and analysis of solution methodologies and mission simulators for a-priori mission plan development and testing, for applications in organizing and scheduling power delivery with mobile energy assets. Applying these methods results in (2) the development and analysis of reasonable a-priori mission plans for autonomous mobile microgrids/assets, in various scenarios.
