Linguistics, phonetics, and field-work
The present, rather loosely structured and causerielike paper is an attempt to summarize some of the reflections, expectations, and frustrations which have marred the author during several years of pendling between instrumental phonetics and theoretical and descriptive linguistics, and during many years of practical field-work. The main emphasis is on the - possibly futile - question: is field-work data likely ever to be of any interest to instrumental phonetics, or vice-versa? No attempt is made to deal systematically with general methodological aspects of field-work (for this reason also, references to the literature on field-work techniques are totally omitted). Moreover, what is said below about conditions to be met in connection with instrumental analysis, will be trivial to most readers. Nevertheless, it may be worth while spelling out what it is that causes field-work activities and instrumental phonetic research to exhibit little or no mutual interaction in contemporary language study. 
Music and language expressiveness: When emotional character does not suffice: the dimension of expressiveness in the cognitive processing of music and language
Book synopsis: In recent decades, the relationship between music, emotions, health and well-being has become a hot topic. Scientific research and new neuro-imaging technologies have provided extraordinary new insights into how music affects our brains and bodies, and researchers in fields ranging from psychology and music therapy to history and sociology have turned their attention to the question of how music relates to mind, body, feelings and health, generating a wealth of insights as well as new challenges. Yet this work is often divided by discipline and methodology, resulting in parallel, yet separate discourses.
In this context, The Routledge Companion to Music, Mind and Well-being seeks to foster truly interdisciplinary approaches to key questions about the nature of musical experience and to demonstrate the importance of the conceptual and ideological frameworks underlying research in this field. Incorporating perspectives from musicology, history, psychology, neuroscience, music education, philosophy, sociology, linguistics and music therapy, this volume opens the way for a generative dialogue across both scientific and humanistic scholarship.
The Companion is divided into two sections. The chapters in the first, historical section consider the varied ways in which music, the emotions, well-being and their interactions have been understood in the past, from Antiquity to the twentieth century, shedding light on the intellectual origins of debates that continue today. The chapters in the second, contemporary section offer a variety of current scientific perspectives on these topics and engage wider philosophical problems. The Companion ends with chapters that explore the practical application of music in healthcare, education and welfare, drawing on work on music as a social and ecological phenomenon.

Vocal-Affective Weaning and its role in musical enculturation: children’s interest in music beyond the Infant-Directed Register
Well-established theoretical approaches to the Infant-directed Register (IDReg) draw a more or less tacit causal relation between it and all future musical engagement: the former establishes a basis for the latter. However, a mechanistic, observable chain of events linking these two phenomena has only been assumed, remaining for the most part unproblematized
and undescribed. This thesis represents a first systematic attempt to fill this theoretical and empirical gap by concretely linking early musicality and the first manifestations of the most characteristic and widespread Western form of musical engagement: listening to recorded music. It does so by introducing a new construct as a mediating motivational factor— Vocal-
Affective Weaning (VAW) —which mainly concerns the variation of caregivers’ use of the IDReg across developmental time.
The thesis is grounded and tested in three literature reviews, two theoretical chapters, and three empirical ones. In terms of main findings, little evidence is found to support the existence of VAW as depicted in the main thesis. Consequently, any direct relationship between VAW and toddlers' attention to recorded music seems doubtful. Instead, data evidences a progressive use of Infant-Directed Speech (IDSp) as an ostensive cue used in the
context of Natural Pedagogy, which allows for a better understanding of the relative importance of affectivity and cognition as parallel, coexisting governing principles that exert an influence on developmental changes concerning parental use of IDSp. If anything, data highlights
interaction as a much more promising element in an explanatory chain linking the IDReg and Western forms of music engagement. The mentioned mismatch between the main thesis and results is interpreted in terms of the former’s unjustified stress on ‘centripetal’ over ‘centrifugal’ attachment dynamics. Resulting data also allows to delineate more nuanced

How does prosodic deficit impact naïve listeners recognition of emotion? An analysis with speakers affected by Parkinson's disease
Abstract
This study aimed to understand the impact of the prosodic deficit in Parkinson's disease (PD) on the communicative effectiveness of vocal expression of emotion. Fourteen patients with PD and 13 healthy control subjects (HC) uttered the phrase "non è possible, non ora" ("It is not possible, not now") six times reading different emotional narrations. Three experts evaluated the PD subjects' vocal production in terms of their communicative effectiveness. The PD patients were divided into two groups: PD+ (with residual effectiveness) and PD− (with impaired effectiveness). The vocal productions were administered to 30 naïve listeners. They were requested to label the emotion they recognized and to make judgments about their communicative effectiveness. The PD speakers were perceived as less effective than the HC speakers in conveying emotions (especially fear and anger). The PD− group was the most impaired in the expression of emotion, suggesting that speech disorders impact differently at the same stage of the disease with varying degrees of severity
LaDIVA: A neurocomputational model providing laryngeal motor control for speech acquisition and production
Many voice disorders are the result of intricate neural and/or biomechanical impairments that are poorly understood. The limited knowledge of their etiological and pathophysiological mechanisms hampers effective clinical management. Behavioral studies have been used concurrently with computational models to better understand typical and pathological laryngeal motor control. Thus far, however, a unified computational framework that quantitatively integrates physiologically relevant models of phonation with the neural control of speech has not been developed. Here, we introduce LaDIVA, a novel neurocomputational model with physiologically based laryngeal motor control. We combined the DIVA model (an established neural network model of speech motor control) with the extended body-cover model (a physics-based vocal fold model). The resulting integrated model, LaDIVA, was validated by comparing its model simulations with behavioral responses to perturbations of auditory vocal fundamental frequency (fo) feedback in adults with typical speech. LaDIVA demonstrated capability to simulate different modes of laryngeal motor control, ranging from short-term (i.e., reflexive) and long-term (i.e., adaptive) auditory feedback paradigms, to generating prosodic contours in speech. Simulations showed that LaDIVA’s laryngeal motor control displays properties of motor equivalence, i.e., LaDIVA could robustly generate compensatory responses to reflexive vocal fo perturbations with varying initial laryngeal muscle activation levels leading to the same output. The model can also generate prosodic contours for studying laryngeal motor control in running speech. LaDIVA can expand the understanding of the physiology of human phonation to enable, for the first time, the investigation of causal effects of neural motor control in the fine structure of the vocal signal.Fil: Weerathunge, Hasini R.. An exploration of the rhythm of Malay
In recent years there has been a surge of interest in speech rhythm. However we still lack a clear understanding of the nature of rhythm and rhythmic differences across languages. Various metrics have been proposed as means for measuring rhythm on the phonetic level and making typological comparisons between languages (Ramus et al, 1999; Grabe & Low, 2002; Dellwo, 2006) but the debate is ongoing on the extent to which these metrics capture the rhythmic basis of speech (Arvaniti, 2009; Fletcher, in press). Furthermore, cross linguistic studies of rhythm have covered a relatively small number of languages and research on previously unclassified languages is necessary to fully develop the typology of rhythm. This study examines the rhythmic features of Malay, for which, to date, relatively little work has been carried out on aspects rhythm and timing.
The material for the analysis comprised 10 sentences produced by 20 speakers of standard Malay (10 males and 10 females). The recordings were first analysed using rhythm metrics proposed by Ramus et. al (1999) and Grabe & Low (2002). These metrics (∆C, %V, rPVI, nPVI) are based on durational measurements of vocalic and consonantal intervals. The results indicated that Malay clustered with other so-called syllable-timed languages like French and Spanish on the basis of all metrics. However, underlying the overall findings for these metrics there was a large degree of variability in values across speakers and sentences, with some speakers having values in the range typical of stressed-timed languages like English.
Further analysis has been carried out in light of Fletcher’s (in press) argument that measurements based on duration do not wholly reflect speech rhythm as there are many other factors that can influence values of consonantal and vocalic intervals, and Arvaniti’s (2009) suggestion that other features of speech should also be considered in description of rhythm to discover what contributes to listeners’ perception of regularity. Spectrographic analysis of the Malay recordings brought to light two parameters that displayed consistency and regularity for all speakers and sentences: the duration of individual vowels and the duration of intervals between intensity minima.
This poster presents the results of these investigations and points to connections between the features which seem to be consistently regulated in the timing of Malay connected speech and aspects of Malay phonology. The results are discussed in light of current debate on the descriptions of rhythm
Automated voice pathology discrimination from audio recordings benefits from phonetic analysis of continuous speech
In this paper we evaluate the hypothesis that automated methods for diagnosis of voice disorders from speech recordings would benefit from contextual information found in continuous speech. Rather than basing a diagnosis on how disorders affect the average acoustic properties of the speech signal, the idea is to exploit the possibility that different disorders will cause different acoustic changes within different phonetic contexts. Any differences in the pattern of effects across contexts would then provide additional information for discrimination of pathologies. We evaluate this approach using two complementary studies: the first uses a short phrase which is automatically annotated using a phonetic transcription, the second uses a long reading passage which is automatically annotated from text. The first study uses a single sentence recorded from 597 speakers in the Saarbrucken Voice Database to discriminate structural from neurogenic disorders. The results show that discrimination performance for these broad pathology classes improves from 59% to 67% unweighted average recall when classifiers are trained for each phone-label and the results fused. Although the phonetic contexts improved discrimination, the overall sensitivity and specificity of the method seems insufficient for clinical application. We hypothesise that this is because of the limited contexts in the speech audio and the heterogeneous nature of the disorders. In the second study we address these issues by processing recordings of a long reading passage obtained from clinical recordings of 60 speakers with either Spasmodic Dysphonia or Vocal fold Paralysis. We show that discrimination performance increases from 80% to 87% unweighted average recall if classifiers are trained for each phone-labelled region and predictions fused. We also show that the sensitivity and specificity of a diagnostic test with this performance is similar to other diagnostic procedures in clinical use. In conclusion, the studies confirm that the exploitation of contextual differences in the way disorders affect speech improves automated diagnostic performance, and that automated methods for phonetic annotation of reading passages are robust enough to extract useful diagnostic information
