NeuroFlow: A General Purpose Spiking Neural Network Simulation Platform using Customizable Processors
© 2016 Cheung, Schultz and Luk.NeuroFlow is a scalable spiking neural network simulation platform for off-the-shelf high performance computing systems using customizable hardware processors such as Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Unlike multi-core processors and application-specific integrated circuits, the processor architecture of NeuroFlow can be redesigned and reconfigured to suit a particular simulation to deliver optimized performance, such as the degree of parallelism to employ. The compilation process supports using PyNN, a simulator-independent neural network description language, to configure the processor. NeuroFlow supports a number of commonly used current or conductance based neuronal models such as integrate-and-fire and Izhikevich models, and the spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) rule for learning. A 6-FPGA system can simulate a network of up to ~600,000 neurons and can achieve a real-time performance of 400,000 neurons. Using one FPGA, NeuroFlow delivers a speedup of up to 33.6 times the speed of an 8-core processor, or 2.83 times the speed of GPU-based platforms. Automatic Application-Specific Customization of Softcore Processor Microarchitecture, Masters Thesis, May 2006
Applications for constrained embedded systems are subject to strict runtime and resource utilization bounds. With soft core processors, application developers can customize the processor for their application, constrained by available hardware resources but aimed at high application performance. The more reconfigurable the processor is, the more options the application developers will have for customization and hence increased potential for improving application performance. However, such customization entails developing in-depth familiarity with all the parameters, in order to configure them effectively. This is typically infeasible, given the tight time-to-market pressure on the developers. Alternatively, developers could explore all possible configurations, but being exponential, this is infeasible even given only tens of parameters. This thesis presents an approach based on an assumption of parameter independence, for automatic microarchitecture customization. This approach is linear with the number of parameter values and hence, feasible and scalable. For the dimensions that we customize, namely application runtime and hardware resources, we formulate their costs as a constrained binary integer nonlinear optimization program. Though the results are not guaranteed to be optimal, we find they are near-optimal in practice. Our technique itself is general and can be applied to other design-space exploration problems
Evaluation of Different Manual Placement Strategies to Ensure Uniformity of the V-FPGA
Virtual FPGA (V-FPGA) architectures are useful as both early prototyping testbeds for custom FPGA architectures, as well as to enable advanced features which may not be available on a given host FPGA. V-FPGAs use standard FPGA synthesis and placement tools, and as a result the maximum application frequency is largely determined by the synthesis of the V-FPGA onto the host FPGA. Minimal net delays in the virtual layer are crucial for applications, but due to increased routing congestion, these delays are often significantly worse for larger than for smaller designs. To counter this effect, we investigate three different placement strategies with varying amounts of manual intervention. Taking the regularity of the V-FPGA architecture into account, a regular placement of tiles can lead to an 37% improvement in the achievable clock frequency. In addition, uniformity of the measured net delays is increased by 39%, which makes implementation of user applications more reproducible. As a trade-off, these manual placement strategies increase area usage of the virtual layer up to 16%

AN ARCHITECTURE EVALUATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A SOFT GPGPU FOR FPGAs
Embedded and mobile systems must be able to execute a variety of different types of code, often with minimal available hardware. Many embedded systems now come with a simple processor and an FPGA, but not more energy-hungry components, such as a GPGPU. In this dissertation we present FlexGrip, a soft architecture which allows for the execution of GPGPU code on an FPGA without the need to recompile the design. The architecture is optimized for FPGA implementation to effectively support the conditional and thread-based execution characteristics of GPGPU execution without FPGA design recompilation. This architecture supports direct CUDA compilation to a binary which is executable on the FPGA-based GPGPU. Our architecture is customizable, thus providing the FPGA designer with a selection of GPGPU cores which display performance versus area tradeoffs.
This dissertation describes the FlexGrip architecture in detail and showcases the benefits by evaluating the design for a collection of five standard CUDA benchmarks which are compiled using standard GPGPU compilation tools. Speedups of 23x, on average, versus a MicroBlaze microprocessor are achieved for designs which take advantage of the conditional execution capabilities offered by FlexGrip. We also show FlexGrip can achieve an 80% average reduction of dynamic energy versus the MicroBlaze microprocessor.
The dissertation furthers discussion by exploring application-customized versions of the soft GPGPU, thus exploiting the overlay architecture. We expand the architecture to multiple processors per GPGPU and optimizing away features which are not needed by certain classes of applications. These optimizations, which include the effective use of block RAMs and DSP blocks, are critical to the performance of FlexGrip. By implementing a 2 GPGPU design, we show speedups of 44x on average versus a MicroBlaze microprocessor. Application-customized versions of the soft GPGPU can be used to further reduce dynamic energy consumption by an average of 14%.
To complete this thesis, we augmented a GPGPU cycle accurate simulator to emulate FlexGrip and evaluate different levels of cache design spaces. We show performance increases for select benchmarks, however, we also show that 64% and 45% of benchmarks exhibited performance decreases when L1D cache was enabled for the 1 SMP and 2 SMP configurations, and only one benchmark showed performance improvement when the L2 cache was enabled
VThreads: A novel VLIW chip multiprocessor with hardware-assisted PThreads
We discuss VThreads, a novel VLIW CMP with hardware-assisted shared-memory Thread support. VThreads supports Instruction Level Parallelism via static multiple-issue and Thread Level Parallelism via hardware-assisted POSIX Threads along with extensive customization. It allows the instantiation of tightlycoupled streaming accelerators and supports up to 7-address Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output instruction extensions. VThreads is designed in technology-independent Register-Transfer-Level VHDL and prototyped on 40 nm and 28 nm Field-Programmable gate arrays. It was evaluated against a PThreads-based multiprocessor
based on the Sparc-V8 ISA. On a 65 nm ASIC implementation VThreads achieves up to x7.2
performance increase on synthetic benchmarks, x5 on a parallel Mandelbrot implementation, 66% better on a threaded JPEG implementation, 79% better on an edge-detection benchmark and ~13% improvement on DES compared to the Leon3MP CMP. In the range of 2 to 8 cores VThreads demonstrates a post-route (statistical) power reduction between 65% to 57% at an area increase of 1.2%-10% for 1-8 cores, compared to a similarly-configured Leon3MP CMP.
