Data-driven multivariate and multiscale methods for brain computer interface
This thesis focuses on the development of data-driven multivariate and multiscale methods
for brain computer interface (BCI) systems. The electroencephalogram (EEG), the
most convenient means to measure neurophysiological activity due to its noninvasive nature,
is mainly considered. The nonlinearity and nonstationarity inherent in EEG and its
multichannel recording nature require a new set of data-driven multivariate techniques to
estimate more accurately features for enhanced BCI operation. Also, a long term goal
is to enable an alternative EEG recording strategy for achieving long-term and portable
monitoring.
Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and local mean decomposition (LMD), fully
data-driven adaptive tools, are considered to decompose the nonlinear and nonstationary
EEG signal into a set of components which are highly localised in time and frequency. It
is shown that the complex and multivariate extensions of EMD, which can exploit common
oscillatory modes within multivariate (multichannel) data, can be used to accurately
estimate and compare the amplitude and phase information among multiple sources, a
key for the feature extraction of BCI system. A complex extension of local mean decomposition
is also introduced and its operation is illustrated on two channel neuronal
spike streams. Common spatial pattern (CSP), a standard feature extraction technique
for BCI application, is also extended to complex domain using the augmented complex
statistics. Depending on the circularity/noncircularity of a complex signal, one of the
complex CSP algorithms can be chosen to produce the best classification performance
between two different EEG classes.
Using these complex and multivariate algorithms, two cognitive brain studies are
investigated for more natural and intuitive design of advanced BCI systems. Firstly, a Yarbus-style auditory selective attention experiment is introduced to measure the user
attention to a sound source among a mixture of sound stimuli, which is aimed at improving
the usefulness of hearing instruments such as hearing aid. Secondly, emotion experiments
elicited by taste and taste recall are examined to determine the pleasure and displeasure
of a food for the implementation of affective computing. The separation between two
emotional responses is examined using real and complex-valued common spatial pattern
methods.
Finally, we introduce a novel approach to brain monitoring based on EEG recordings
from within the ear canal, embedded on a custom made hearing aid earplug. The new
platform promises the possibility of both short- and long-term continuous use for standard
brain monitoring and interfacing applications
Modulation parameter estimation of LFM interference for direct sequence spread spectrum communication system in alpha-stable noise
The linear frequency modulation (LFM) interference is one of the typical broadband interferences in direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) communication system. In this article, a novel modulation parameter estimation method of LFM interference is proposed for the DSSS communication system in alpha-stable noise. To accurately estimate the modulation parameters, the alpha-stable noise should be eliminated first. Thus, we formulate a new generalized extended linear chirplet transform to suppress the alpha-stable noise, for a robust time-frequency, transformation of LFM interference is realized. Then, using the Radon transform, the maximum value after transformation and the chirp rate according to the angle related to the maximum value are estimated. In addition, a generalized Fourier transform is introduced to estimate the initial frequency of the LFM interference. For the performance analysis, the Cramér-Rao lower bounds of the estimated chirp rate and the initial frequency of the LFM interference in the presence of alpha-stable noise are derived. Moreover, the asymptotic properties of the modulation parameter estimator are analyzed. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed parameter estimation method significantly outperforms existing methods, especially in a low SNR regime

In this paper a signal analysis framework for estimating time-varying amplitude and frequency functions of multicomponent amplitude and frequency modulated (AMâFM) signals is introduced. This framework is based on local and non-linear approaches, namely Energy Separation Algorithm (ESA) and Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). Conjunction of Discrete ESA (DESA) and EMD is called EMDâDESA. A new modified version of EMD where smoothing instead of an interpolation to construct the upper and lower envelopes of the signal is introduced. Since extracted IMFs are represented in terms of B-spline (BS) expansions, a closed formula of ESA robust against noise is used. Instantaneous Frequency (IF) and Instantaneous Amplitude (IA) estimates of a multi- component AMâFM signal, corrupted with additive white Gaussian noise of varying SNRs, are analyzed and results compared to ESA, DESA and Hilbert transform-based algorithms. SNR and MSE are used as figures of merit. Regularized BS version of EMDâ ESA performs reasonably better in separating IA and IF components compared to the other methods from low to high SNR. Overall, obtained results illustrate the effective- ness of the proposed approach in terms of accuracy and robustness against noise to track IF and IA features of a multicomponent AMâFM signal
Ranging and tracking system for proximity operations, phase 1
A study task is reported which is directed towards developing a conceptual design of a small, lightweight range and range rate radar sensor system to meet NASA's requirements for accurate short-range and velocity measurements in an orbital environment. Within the context of the requirements, the short range implies system operation at 0 m to 1850 m (6000 ft) and accurate implies a range measurement to within 1 sigma accuracy of 0.20 m (0.67 ft) and a range rate (velocity) measurement to within 1 sigma accuracy of 0.01 m/sec (0.033 ft/sec)

However, the need to cover large areas and/or the use of small robotic platforms has evoked interest in single-hydrophone processing methods for localizing a source or characterizing the propagation environment. One such processing method is âwarping,â a non-linear, physics-based signal processing tool dedicated to decomposing multipath features of low-frequency transient signals (frequency fââ1âkm). Since its introduction to the underwater acoustics community in 2010, warping has been adopted in the ocean acoustics literature, mostly as a pre-processing method for single receiver geoacoustic inversion. Warping also has potential applications in other specialties, including bioacoustics; however, the technique can be daunting to many potential users unfamiliar with its intricacies. Consequently, this tutorial article covers basic warping theory, presents simulation examples, and provides practical experimental strategies. Accompanying supplementary material provides matlab code and simulated and experimental datasets for easy implementation of warping on both impulsive and frequency-modulated signals from both biotic and man-made sources. Acoustical Ranging Techniques in Embedded Wireless Sensor Networked Devices
Location sensing provides endless opportunities for a wide range of applications in GPS-obstructed environments;
where, typically, there is a need for higher degree of accuracy. In this article, we focus on robust range
estimation, an important prerequisite for fine-grained localization. Motivated by the promise of acoustic in
delivering high ranging accuracy, we present the design, implementation and evaluation of acoustic (both
ultrasound and audible) ranging systems.We distill the limitations of acoustic ranging; and present efficient
signal designs and detection algorithms to overcome the challenges of coverage, range, accuracy/resolution,
tolerance to Dopplerâs effect, and audible intensity. We evaluate our proposed techniques experimentally on
TWEET, a low-power platform purpose-built for acoustic ranging applications. Our experiments demonstrate
an operational range of 20 m (outdoor) and an average accuracy 2 cm in the ultrasound domain. Finally,
we present the design of an audible-range acoustic tracking service that encompasses the benefits of a near-inaudible
acoustic broadband chirp and approximately two times increase in Doppler tolerance to achieve better performance
