RMSE-ELM: Recursive Model based Selective Ensemble of Extreme Learning Machines for Robustness Improvement
Extreme learning machine (ELM) as an emerging branch of shallow networks has
shown its excellent generalization and fast learning speed. However, for
blended data, the robustness of ELM is weak because its weights and biases of
hidden nodes are set randomly. Moreover, the noisy data exert a negative
effect. To solve this problem, a new framework called RMSE-ELM is proposed in
this paper. It is a two-layer recursive model. In the first layer, the
framework trains lots of ELMs in different groups concurrently, then employs
selective ensemble to pick out an optimal set of ELMs in each group, which can
be merged into a large group of ELMs called candidate pool. In the second
layer, selective ensemble is recursively used on candidate pool to acquire the
final ensemble. In the experiments, we apply UCI blended datasets to confirm
the robustness of our new approach in two key aspects (mean square error and
standard deviation). The space complexity of our method is increased to some
degree, but the results have shown that RMSE-ELM significantly improves
robustness with slightly computational time compared with representative
methods (ELM, OP-ELM, GASEN-ELM, GASEN-BP and E-GASEN). It becomes a potential
framework to solve robustness issue of ELM for high-dimensional blended data in
the future.Comment: Accepted for publication in Mathematical Problems in Engineering,

Forecasting the geomagnetic activity of the Dst Index using radial basis function networks
The Dst index is a key parameter which characterises the disturbance of the geomagnetic field in magnetic storms. Modelling of the Dst index is thus very important for the analysis of the geomagnetic field. A data-based modelling approach, aimed at obtaining efficient models based on limited input-output observational data, provides a powerful tool for analysing and forecasting geomagnetic activities including the prediction of the Dst index. Radial basis function (RBF) networks are an important and popular network model for nonlinear system identification and dynamical modelling. A novel generalised multiscale RBF (MSRBF) network is introduced for Dst index modelling. The proposed MSRBF network can easily be converted into a linear-in-the-parameters form and the training of the linear network model can easily be implemented using an orthogonal least squares (OLS) type algorithm. One advantage of the new MSRBF network, compared with traditional single scale RBF networks, is that the new network is more flexible for describing complex nonlinear dynamical systems
Exploring Large Feature Spaces with Hierarchical Multiple Kernel Learning
For supervised and unsupervised learning, positive definite kernels allow to
use large and potentially infinite dimensional feature spaces with a
computational cost that only depends on the number of observations. This is
usually done through the penalization of predictor functions by Euclidean or
Hilbertian norms. In this paper, we explore penalizing by sparsity-inducing
norms such as the l1-norm or the block l1-norm. We assume that the kernel
decomposes into a large sum of individual basis kernels which can be embedded
in a directed acyclic graph; we show that it is then possible to perform kernel
selection through a hierarchical multiple kernel learning framework, in
polynomial time in the number of selected kernels. This framework is naturally
applied to non linear variable selection; our extensive simulations on
synthetic datasets and datasets from the UCI repository show that efficiently
exploring the large feature space through sparsity-inducing norms leads to
state-of-the-art predictive performance
Radial basis function classifier construction using particle swarm optimisation aided orthogonal forward regression
We develop a particle swarm optimisation (PSO)
aided orthogonal forward regression (OFR) approach for constructing radial basis function (RBF) classifiers with tunable nodes. At each stage of the OFR construction process, the centre vector and diagonal covariance matrix of one RBF node is determined efficiently by minimising the leave-one-out (LOO) misclassification rate (MR) using a PSO algorithm. Compared with the state-of-the-art regularisation assisted orthogonal least square algorithm based on the LOO MR for selecting fixednode RBF classifiers, the proposed PSO aided OFR algorithm for constructing tunable-node RBF classifiers offers significant advantages in terms of better generalisation performance and smaller model size as well as imposes lower computational complexity in classifier construction process. Moreover, the proposed algorithm does not have any hyperparameter that requires costly tuning based on cross validation
