Input Prioritization for Testing Neural Networks
Deep neural networks (DNNs) are increasingly being adopted for sensing and
control functions in a variety of safety and mission-critical systems such as
self-driving cars, autonomous air vehicles, medical diagnostics, and industrial
robotics. Failures of such systems can lead to loss of life or property, which
necessitates stringent verification and validation for providing high
assurance. Though formal verification approaches are being investigated,
testing remains the primary technique for assessing the dependability of such
systems. Due to the nature of the tasks handled by DNNs, the cost of obtaining
test oracle data---the expected output, a.k.a. label, for a given input---is
high, which significantly impacts the amount and quality of testing that can be
performed. Thus, prioritizing input data for testing DNNs in meaningful ways to
reduce the cost of labeling can go a long way in increasing testing efficacy.
This paper proposes using gauges of the DNN's sentiment derived from the
computation performed by the model, as a means to identify inputs that are
likely to reveal weaknesses. We empirically assessed the efficacy of three such
sentiment measures for prioritization---confidence, uncertainty, and
surprise---and compare their effectiveness in terms of their fault-revealing
capability and retraining effectiveness. The results indicate that sentiment
measures can effectively flag inputs that expose unacceptable DNN behavior. For
MNIST models, the average percentage of inputs correctly flagged ranged from
88% to 94.8%
Reinforcement Learning for Automatic Test Case Prioritization and Selection in Continuous Integration
Testing in Continuous Integration (CI) involves test case prioritization,
selection, and execution at each cycle. Selecting the most promising test cases
to detect bugs is hard if there are uncertainties on the impact of committed
code changes or, if traceability links between code and tests are not
available. This paper introduces Retecs, a new method for automatically
learning test case selection and prioritization in CI with the goal to minimize
the round-trip time between code commits and developer feedback on failed test
cases. The Retecs method uses reinforcement learning to select and prioritize
test cases according to their duration, previous last execution and failure
history. In a constantly changing environment, where new test cases are created
and obsolete test cases are deleted, the Retecs method learns to prioritize
error-prone test cases higher under guidance of a reward function and by
observing previous CI cycles. By applying Retecs on data extracted from three
industrial case studies, we show for the first time that reinforcement learning
enables fruitful automatic adaptive test case selection and prioritization in
CI and regression testing.Comment: Spieker, H., Gotlieb, A., Marijan, D., & Mossige, M. (2017).

DanQ: a hybrid convolutional and recurrent deep neural network for quantifying the function of DNA sequences.
Modeling the properties and functions of DNA sequences is an important, but challenging task in the broad field of genomics. This task is particularly difficult for non-coding DNA, the vast majority of which is still poorly understood in terms of function. A powerful predictive model for the function of non-coding DNA can have enormous benefit for both basic science and translational research because over 98% of the human genome is non-coding and 93% of disease-associated variants lie in these regions. To address this need, we propose DanQ, a novel hybrid convolutional and bi-directional long short-term memory recurrent neural network framework for predicting non-coding function de novo from sequence. In the DanQ model, the convolution layer captures regulatory motifs, while the recurrent layer captures long-term dependencies between the motifs in order to learn a regulatory 'grammar' to improve predictions. DanQ improves considerably upon other models across several metrics. For some regulatory markers, DanQ can achieve over a 50% relative improvement in the area under the precision-recall curve metric compared to related models. We have made the source code available at the github repository http://github.com/uci-cbcl/DanQ
A Survey on Software Testing Techniques using Genetic Algorithm
The overall aim of the software industry is to ensure delivery of high
quality software to the end user. To ensure high quality software, it is
required to test software. Testing ensures that software meets user
specifications and requirements. However, the field of software testing has a
number of underlying issues like effective generation of test cases,
prioritisation of test cases etc which need to be tackled. These issues demand
on effort, time and cost of the testing. Different techniques and methodologies
have been proposed for taking care of these issues. Use of evolutionary
algorithms for automatic test generation has been an area of interest for many
researchers. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is one such form of evolutionary
algorithms. In this research paper, we present a survey of GA approach for
addressing the various issues encountered during software testing.Comment: 13 Page
Earthquake Hazard Safety Assessment of Existing Buildings Using Optimized Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network
The latest earthquakes have proven that several existing buildings, particularly in developing countries, are not secured from damages of earthquake. A variety of statistical and machine-learning approaches have been proposed to identify vulnerable buildings for the prioritization of retrofitting. The present work aims to investigate earthquake susceptibility through the combination of six building performance variables that can be used to obtain an optimal prediction of the damage state of reinforced concrete buildings using artificial neural network (ANN). In this regard, a multi-layer perceptron network is trained and optimized using a database of 484 damaged buildings from the Düzce earthquake in Turkey. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the selected ANN approach to classify concrete structural damage that can be used as a preliminary assessment technique to identify vulnerable buildings in disaster risk-management programs
