    A Novel PMSM Hybrid Sensorless Control Strategy for EV Applications Based on PLL and HFI

    In this paper, a novel hybrid sensorless control strategy for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) drives applied to Electric Vehicles (EV) is presented. This sensorless strategy covers the EV full speed range and also has speed reversal capability. It combines a High Frequency Injection (HFI) technique for low and zero speeds, and a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) for the medium and high speed regions. A solution to achieve smooth transitions between the PLL and the HFI strategies is also proposed, allowing to correctly detect the rotor position polarity when HFI takes part. Wide speed and torque four-quadrant simulation results are provided, which validate the proposed sensorless strategy for being further implemented in EV.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Improved rotor-position estimation by signal injection in brushless AC motors, accounting for cross-coupling magnetic saturation

    This paper presents an improved signal-injection- based sensorless-control method for permanent-magnet brushless ac (BLAC) motors, accounting for the influence of cross-coupling magnetic saturation between the d- and q-axes. The d- and q-axis incremental self-inductances, the incremental mutual inductance between the d-axis and q-axis, and the cross-coupling factor are determined by finite-element analysis. An experimental method is proposed for measuring the cross-coupling factor which can be used directly in the sensorless-control scheme. Both measurements and predictions show that a significant improvement in the accu- racy of the rotor-position estimation can be achieved under both dynamic and steady-state operation compared with that which is obtained with the conventional signal-injection method

Por ello, la electrificación del transporte por carretera está en pleno auge, favoreciendo la investigación y el desarrollo industrial. El desarrollo de sistemas de propulsión eficientes, fiables, compactos y económicos juega un papel fundamental para la introducción del vehículo eléctrico en el mercado.Las máquinas síncronas de imanes permanentes son, a día de hoy la tecnología más empleada en vehículos eléctricos e híbridos por sus características. Sin embargo, al depender del uso de tierras raras, se están investigando alternativas a este tipo de máquina, tales como las máquinas de reluctancia síncrona asistidas por imanes. Para este tipo de máquinas síncronas es necesario desarrollar estrategias de control eficientes y robustas. Las desviaciones de parámetros son comunes en estas máquinas debido a la saturación magnética y a otra serie de factores, tales como tolerancias de fabricación, dependencias en función de la temperatura de operación o envejecimiento. Las técnicas de control convencionales, especialmente las estrategias de debilitamiento de campo dependen, en general, del conocimiento previo de dichos parámetros. Si no son lo suficientemente robustos, pueden producir problemas de control en las regiones de debilitamiento de campo y debilitamiento de campo profundo. En este sentido, esta tesis presenta dos nuevas estrategias de control de debilitamiento de campo híbridas basadas en LUTs y reguladores VCT.Por otro lado, otro requisito indispensable para la industria de la automoción es la detección de faltas y la tolerancia a fallos. En este sentido, se presenta una nueva estrategia de control sensorless basada en una estructura PLL/HFI híbrida que permite al vehículo continuar operando de forma pseudo-óptima ante roturas en el sensor de posición y velocidad de la máquina eléctrica. En esta tesis, ambas propuestas se validan experimentalmente en un sistema de propulsión real para vehículo eléctrico que cuenta con una máquina de reluctancia síncrona asistidas por imanes de 51 kW

    A practical approach to HFI based sensorless control of PM-assisted synchronous reluctance machines applied to EVs and HEVs

    Sensorless control is a promising alternative for controlling Electric Vehicle (EV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) propulsion systems without the need of complex devices, such as resolvers or encoders. As the usage of a physical sensor is avoided, this allows significant cost reductions of the drive, and the reliability of the system is also improved. EVs require an operation range from standstill to high speeds. At low speeds, the back-EMF of the electric machine is low, and signal injection techniques are required in order to estimate the position and speed of the machine. This paper presents practical implementation details of the High Frequency Injection (HFI) technique, giving special attention to signal processing, offset compensation due to filtering delays and robust speed estimation.     Critical Aspects of Electric Motor Drive Controllers and Mitigation of Torque Ripple - Review

    Electric vehicles (EVs) are playing a vital role in sustainable transportation. It is estimated that by 2030, Battery EVs will become mainstream for passenger car transportation. Even though EVs are gaining interest in sustainable transportation, the future of EV power transmission is facing vital concerns and open research challenges. Considering the case of torque ripple mitigation and improved reliability control techniques in motors, many motor drive control algorithms fail to provide efficient control. To efficiently address this issue, control techniques such as Field Orientation Control (FOC), Direct Torque Control (DTC), Model Predictive Control (MPC), Sliding Mode Control (SMC), and Intelligent Control (IC) techniques are used in the motor drive control algorithms. This literature survey exclusively compares the various advanced control techniques for conventionally used EV motors such as Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDC), Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), and Induction Motors (IM). Furthermore, this paper discusses the EV-motors history, types of EVmotors, EV-motor drives powertrain mathematical modelling, and design procedure of EV-motors. The hardware results have also been compared with different control techniques for BLDC and SRM hub motors. Future direction towards the design of EV by critical selection of motors and their control techniques to minimize the torque ripple and other research opportunities to enhance the performance of EVs are also presented.publishedVersio

    Traction axial flux motor-generator for hybrid electric bus application

    Tato dizertační práce se zabývá návrhem původního motor-generátoru s axiálním tokem a buzením permanetními magnety, zkonstruovaným specificky pro hybridní elektrický autobus. Návrhové zadání pro tento stroj přineslo požadavky, které vedly k této unikátní topologii tak, aby byl dosažen výkon, účinnost a rozměry stroje. Tato partikulární topologie motor-generátoru s axiálním tokem je výsledkem literární rešerše, kterou následoval výběr koncepce stroje s představeným návrhem jako výsledkem těchto procesů. Přístup k návrhu stroje s axiálním tokem sledoval „multi-fyzikální“ koncepci, která pracuje s návrhem elektromagnetickým, tepelným, mechanickým, včetně návrhu řízení, v jedné iteraci. Tím je v konečném návrhu zajištěna rovnováha mezi těmito inženýrskými disciplínami. Pro samotný návrh stroje byla vyvinuta sada výpočtových a analytických nástrojů, které byly podloženy metodou konečných prvků tak, aby samotný návrh stroje byl přesnější a spolehlivější. Modelování somtného elektrického stroje a celého pohonu poskytlo představu o výkonnosti a účinnosti celého subsytému v rozmanitých operačních podmínkách. Rovněž poukázal na optimizační potenciál pro návrh řízení subsystému ve smyslu maximalizace účinnosti celého pohonu. Bylo postaveno několik prototypů tohoto stroje, které prošly intensivním testováním jak na úrovni sybsytému, tak systému. Samotné výsledky testů jsou diskutovány a porovnány s analytickými výpočty parametrů stroje. Poznatky získané z prvního prototypu stroje pak sloužily k představení možností, jak zjednodušit výrobu a montáž stroje v příští generaci. Tato práce zaznamenává jednotlivé kroky během všech fází vývoje elektrického stroje s axiálním tokem, počínaje výběrem konceptu stroje, konče sumarizací zkušeností získaných z první generace prototypu tohoto stroje.This thesis deals with a design of a novel Axial-Flux Permanent Magnet Motor-Generator for a hybrid electric bus application. Thus, the design specification represents a set of requirements, which leads toward a concept of a unique topology meeting performance, efficiency and dimensional targets. The particular topology of the Axial-Flux Permanent Magnet Motor-Generator discussed in this work is an outcome of deep literature survey, followed by the concept selection stage with the layout of the machine as an outcome of this processes. The design approach behind this so-called Spoke Axial-Flux Machine follows an idea of multiphysics iterations, including electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical and controls design. Such a process behind the eventually proposed design ensured a right balance in between all of these engineering disciplines. A set of bespoke design and analysis tools was developed for that reason, and was backed up by extensive use of Finite-Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Therefore, the actual machine design gained higher level of confidence and fidelity. Modelling of the machine and its drive provided understanding of performance and efficiency of the whole subsystem at various operational conditions. Moreover, it has illustrated an optimization potential for the controls design, so that efficiency of the machine and power electronics might be maximized. Several prototypes of this machine have been built and passed through extensive testing both on the subsystem and system level. Actual test results are discussed, and compared to analytical predictions in terms of the machine's parameters. As a lesson learned from the first prototype of this machine, a set of redesign proposals aiming for simplification of manufacturing and assembly processes, are introduced. This work records steps behind all phases of development of the Axial Flux Machine from a basic idea as an outcome of concept selection stage, up to testing and wrap-up of experience gained from the first generation of the machine.

    High-frequency issues using rotating voltage injections intended for position self-sensing

    The rotor position is required in many control schemes in electrical drives. Replacing position sensors by machine self-sensing estimators increases reliability and reduces cost. Solutions based on tracking magnetic anisotropies through the monitoring of the incremental inductance variations are efficient at low-speed and standstill operations. This inductance can be estimated by measuring the response to the injection of high-frequency signals. In general however, the selection of the optimal frequency is not addressed thoroughly. In this paper, we propose discrete-time operations based on a rotating voltage injection at frequencies up to one third of the sampling frequency used by the digital controller. The impact on the rotation-drive, the computational requirement, the robustness and the effect of the resistance on the position estimation are analyzed regarding the signal frequency

    Thermal Modeling of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors for Electric Vehicle Application

    Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a better choice as a traction motor since it has high power density and high torque capability within compact structure. However, accommodating such high power within compact space is a great challenge, as it is responsible for significant rise of heat in PMSM. As a result, there is considerable increase in operating temperature which in turn negatively affects the electromagnetic performance of the motor. Further, if the temperature rise exceeds the permissible limit, it can cause demagnetization of magnets, damage of insulation, bearing faults, etc. which in turn affect the overall lifecycle of the motor. Therefore, thermal issues need to be dealt with carefully during the design phase of PMSM. Hence, the main focus of this thesis is to develop efficient ways for thermal modeling to address thermal issues properly. Firstly, a universal lumped parameter thermal network (LPTN) is proposed which can be used for all types of PMSMs regardless of any winding configuration and any position of magnets in the rotor. Further, a computationally efficient finite element analysis (FEA) thermal model is proposed with a novel hybrid technique utilizing LPTN strategy for addressing the air gap convection in an efficient way. Both proposed LPTN and FEA thermal models are simplified ways to predict motor temperature with a comparatively less calculation process. Finally, the proposed thermal models have been experimentally validated for the newly designed interior and surface mounted PMSM prototypes. Again, a procedure for effective cooling design process of PMSM has been suggested by developing an algorithm for cooling design optimization of the motor. Further, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with a proposed two-way electro-thermal co-analysis strategy has been developed to predict both thermal and electromagnetic performance of PMSM more accurately considering the active cooling system. The developed step algorithm and CFD modeling approach will pave the way for future work on cooling design optimization of the newly designed interior and surface mounted PMSM prototypes

    Application of Fuzzy control algorithms for electric vehicle antilock braking/traction control systems

    Abstract—The application of fuzzy-based control strategies has recently gained enormous recognition as an approach for the rapid development of effective controllers for nonlinear time-variant systems. This paper describes the preliminary research and implementation of a fuzzy logic based controller to control the wheel slip for electric vehicle antilock braking systems (ABSs). As the dynamics of the braking systems are highly nonlinear and time variant, fuzzy control offers potential as an important tool for development of robust traction control. Simulation studies are employed to derive an initial rule base that is then tested on an experimental test facility representing the dynamics of a braking system. The test facility is composed of an induction machine load operating in the generating region. It is shown that the torque-slip characteristics of an induction motor provides a convenient platform for simulating a variety of tire/road - driving conditions, negating the initial requirement for skid-pan trials when developing algorithms. The fuzzy membership functions were subsequently refined by analysis of the data acquired from the test facility while simulating operation at a high coefficient of friction. The robustness of the fuzzy-logic slip regulator is further tested by applying the resulting controller over a wide range of operating conditions. The results indicate that ABS/traction control may substantially improve longitudinal performance and offer significant potential for optimal control of driven wheels, especially under icy conditions where classical ABS/traction control schemes are constrained to operate very conservatively
