Coded DS-CDMA Systems with Iterative Channel Estimation and no Pilot Symbols
In this paper, we describe direct-sequence code-division multiple-access
(DS-CDMA) systems with quadriphase-shift keying in which channel estimation,
coherent demodulation, and decoding are iteratively performed without the use
of any training or pilot symbols. An expectation-maximization
channel-estimation algorithm for the fading amplitude, phase, and the
interference power spectral density (PSD) due to the combined interference and
thermal noise is proposed for DS-CDMA systems with irregular repeat-accumulate
codes. After initial estimates of the fading amplitude, phase, and interference
PSD are obtained from the received symbols, subsequent values of these
parameters are iteratively updated by using the soft feedback from the channel
decoder. The updated estimates are combined with the received symbols and
iteratively passed to the decoder. The elimination of pilot symbols simplifies
the system design and allows either an enhanced information throughput, an
improved bit error rate, or greater spectral efficiency. The interference-PSD
estimation enables DS-CDMA systems to significantly suppress interference.Comment: To appear, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
Near-Instantaneously Adaptive HSDPA-Style OFDM Versus MC-CDMA Transceivers for WIFI, WIMAX, and Next-Generation Cellular Systems
Burts-by-burst (BbB) adaptive high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) style multicarrier systems are reviewed, identifying their most critical design aspects. These systems exhibit numerous attractive features, rendering them eminently eligible for employment in next-generation wireless systems. It is argued that BbB-adaptive or symbol-by-symbol adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) modems counteract the near instantaneous channel quality variations and hence attain an increased throughput or robustness in comparison to their fixed-mode counterparts. Although they act quite differently, various diversity techniques, such as Rake receivers and space-time block coding (STBC) are also capable of mitigating the channel quality variations in their effort to reduce the bit error ratio (BER), provided that the individual antenna elements experience independent fading. By contrast, in the presence of correlated fading imposed by shadowing or time-variant multiuser interference, the benefits of space-time coding erode and it is unrealistic to expect that a fixed-mode space-time coded system remains capable of maintaining a near-constant BER

Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Izmir, 2002Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 72-75)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishx, 75 leavesMultiple transmit antennas giving rise to diversity (transmit diversity) have been shown to increase downlink (base station to the mobile) capacity in cellular systems. The third generation partnership project (3GPP) for WCDMA has chosen space time transmit diversity (STTD) as the open loop transmit diversity technique for two transmit antennas. On the other hand, the CDMA 2000 has chosen space time spreading (STS) and orthogonal transmit diversity (OTD) as the open loop transmit diversity. In addition to all the standardization aspects, proposed contributions such as space time coding assisted double spread rake receiver (STC-DS-RR) are exist. In this thesis, open loop transmit diversity techniques of 3GPP, CDMA 2000 and existing contributions are investigated.Their performances are compared as a means of biterror- rate (BER) versus signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)
Multiuser MIMO-OFDM for Next-Generation Wireless Systems
This overview portrays the 40-year evolution of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) research. The amelioration of powerful multicarrier OFDM arrangements with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has numerous benefits, which are detailed in this treatise. We continue by highlighting the limitations of conventional detection and channel estimation techniques designed for multiuser MIMO OFDM systems in the so-called rank-deficient scenarios, where the number of users supported or the number of transmit antennas employed exceeds the number of receiver antennas. This is often encountered in practice, unless we limit the number of users granted access in the base station’s or radio port’s coverage area. Following a historical perspective on the associated design problems and their state-of-the-art solutions, the second half of this treatise details a range of classic multiuser detectors (MUDs) designed for MIMO-OFDM systems and characterizes their achievable performance. A further section aims for identifying novel cutting-edge genetic algorithm (GA)-aided detector solutions, which have found numerous applications in wireless communications in recent years. In an effort to stimulate the cross pollination of ideas across the machine learning, optimization, signal processing, and wireless communications research communities, we will review the broadly applicable principles of various GA-assisted optimization techniques, which were recently proposed also for employment inmultiuser MIMO OFDM. In order to stimulate new research, we demonstrate that the family of GA-aided MUDs is capable of achieving a near-optimum performance at the cost of a significantly lower computational complexity than that imposed by their optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) MUD aided counterparts. The paper is concluded by outlining a range of future research options that may find their way into next-generation wireless systems
Timing and Carrier Synchronization in Wireless Communication Systems: A Survey and Classification of Research in the Last 5 Years
Timing and carrier synchronization is a fundamental requirement for any wireless communication system to work properly. Timing synchronization is the process by which a receiver node determines the correct instants of time at which to sample the incoming signal. Carrier synchronization is the process by which a receiver adapts the frequency and phase of its local carrier oscillator with those of the received signal. In this paper, we survey the literature over the last 5 years (2010–2014) and present a comprehensive literature review and classification of the recent research progress in achieving timing and carrier synchronization in single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), cooperative relaying, and multiuser/multicell interference networks. Considering both single-carrier and multi-carrier communication systems, we survey and categorize the timing and carrier synchronization techniques proposed for the different communication systems focusing on the system model assumptions for synchronization, the synchronization challenges, and the state-of-the-art synchronization solutions and their limitations. Finally, we envision some future research directions
A reduced-CP approach to SC/FDE block transmission for broadband wireless communications
For conventional cyclic prefix (CP)-assisted single-carrier/frequency-domain equalization (SC/FDE) implementations, as well as for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) implementations, the CP length is known to be selected on the basis of the expected maximum delay spread. Next, the data block size can be chosen to be large enough to minimize the CP overhead, yet small enough to make the channel variation over the block negligible. This paper considers the possibility of reducing the overall CP assistance, when transmitting sequences of SC blocks, while avoiding an excessively long fast Fourier transform window for FDE purposes and keeping good FDE performances through low-complexity, noniterative receiver techniques. These techniques, which take advantage of specially designed frame structures, rely on a basic algorithm for decision-directed correction (DDC) of the FDE inputs when the CP is not long enough to cope with the time-dispersive channel effects. More specifically, we present and evaluate a novel class of reduced-CP SC/FDE schemes, which takes advantage of a special frame structure for replacing "useless" CP redundancy by fully useful channel coding redundancy, with the help of the DDC algorithm. When using the DDC-FDE technique with these especially designed frame structures, the impact of previous decisions, which are not error-free, is shown to be rather small, thereby allowing a power-efficiency advantage (in addition to the obvious bandwidth-efficiency advantage) over conventional block transmission implementations under full-length CP. Additionally, the DDC algorithm is also shown to be useful to improve the power efficiency of these conventional implementations.Fundação para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (FCT), Centro de Análise e processamento de Sinais (CAPS
Robust frequency-domain turbo equalization for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications
This dissertation investigates single carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels for radio frequency (RF) and underwater acoustic (UWA) wireless communications. It consists of five papers, selected from a total of 13 publications. Each paper focuses on a specific technical challenge of the SC-FDE MIMO system. The first paper proposes an improved frequency-domain channel estimation method based on interpolation to track fast time-varying fading channels using a small amount of training symbols in a large data block. The second paper addresses the carrier frequency offset (CFO) problem using a new group-wise phase estimation and compensation algorithm to combat phase distortion caused by CFOs, rather than to explicitly estimate the CFOs. The third paper incorporates layered frequency-domain equalization with the phase correction algorithm to combat the fast phase rotation in coherent communications. In the fourth paper, the frequency-domain equalization combined with the turbo principle and soft successive interference cancelation (SSIC) is proposed to further improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of UWA communications. In the fifth paper, a bandwidth-efficient SC-FDE scheme incorporating decision-directed channel estimation is proposed for UWA MIMO communication systems. The proposed algorithms are tested by extensive computer simulations and real ocean experiment data. The results demonstrate significant performance improvements in four aspects: improved channel tracking, reduced BER, reduced computational complexity, and enhanced data efficiency --Abstract, page iv
Semi-blind channel estimation for multiuser OFDM-IDMA systems.
M. Sc. Eng. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2014.Over the last decade, the data rate and spectral efficiency of wireless mobile communications have been significantly enhanced. OFDM technology has been used in the development of advanced systems such as 3GPP LTE and terrestrial digital TV broadcasting. In general, bits of information in mobile communication systems are conveyed through radio links to receivers. The radio channels in mobile radio systems are usually multipath fading channels, which cause inter-symbol interference (ISI) in the received signal. The ability to know the channel impulse response (CIR) and Channel State Information (CSI) helps to remove the ISI from the signal and make coherent detection of the transmitted signal at the receiver end of the system easy and simple. The information about CIR and CSI are primarily provided by channel estimation.
This thesis is focused on the development of multiple access communication technique, Multicarrier Interleave Division Multiple Access (MC-IDMA) and the corresponding estimation of the system channel. It compares various efficient channel estimation algorithms. Channel estimation of OFDM-IDMA scheme is important because the emphasis from previous studies assumed the implementation of MC-IDMA in a perfect scenario, where Channel State Information (CSI) is known.
MC-IDMA technique incorporates three key features that will be common to the next generation communication systems; multiple access capability, resistance to multipath fading and high bandwidth efficiency.
OFDM is almost completely immune to multipath fading effects and IDMA has a recently proposed multiuser capability scheme which employs random interleavers as the only method for user separation. MC-IDMA combines the features of OFDM and IDMA to produce a system that is Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) free and has higher data rate capabilities for multiple users simultaneously. The interleaver property of IDMA is used by MC-IDMA as the only means by which users are separated at the receiver and also its entire bandwidth expansion is devoted to low rate Forward Error Correction (FEC). This provides additional coding gain which is not present in conventional Multicarrier Multiuser systems, (MC-MU) such as Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Multicarrier-Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) systems, and others. The effect of channel fading and both cross-cell and intra-cell Multiple Access Interference (MAI) in MC-IDMA is suppressed efficiently by its low-cost turbo-type Chip-by-Chip (CBC) multiuser detection algorithm.
We present the basic principles of OFDM-IDMA transmitter and receiver. Comparative studies between Multiple Access Scheme such as Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), CDMA and IDMA are carried out. A linear Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE)-based estimation algorithm is adopted and implemented. This proposed algorithm is a non-data aided method that focuses on obtaining the CSI, remove ISI and reduce the complexity of the MMSE algorithm. However, to obtain a better and improved system performance, an improved MMSE algorithm and simplified MMSE using the structured correlation and reduced auto-covariance matrix are developed in this thesis and proposed for implementation of semi-blind channel estimation in OFDM-IDMA communication systems. The effectiveness of the adopted and proposed algorithms are implemented in a Rayleigh fading multipath channel with varying mobile speeds thus demonstrating the performance of the system in a practical scenario. Also, the implemented algorithms are compared to ascertain which of these algorithms offers a better and more efficient system performance, and with less complexity. The performance of the channel estimation algorithm is presented in terms of the mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER) in both slow fading and fast fading multipath scenarios and the results are documented as well
