    ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT STRATEGIES FOR CIRCUIT OPTIMIZATION

    AbstractThe process of analog circuit optimization is defined mathematically as a controllable dynamical system. In this context, we can formulate the problem of minimizing the CPU time as the minimization problem of a transitional process of a dynamical system. To analyse the properties of such a system, we propose to use the concept of the Lyapunov function of a dynamical system.     Surrogate based Optimization and Verification of Analog and Mixed Signal Circuits

    Nonlinear Analog and Mixed Signal (AMS) circuits are very complex and expensive to design and verify. Deeper technology scaling has made these designs susceptible to noise and process variations which presents a growing concern due to the degradation in the circuit performances and risks of design failures. In fact, due to process parameters, AMS circuits like phase locked loops may present chaotic behavior that can be confused with noisy behavior. To design and verify circuits, current industrial designs rely heavily on simulation based verification and knowledge based optimization techniques. However, such techniques lack mathematical rigor necessary to catch up with the growing design constraints besides being computationally intractable. Given all aforementioned barriers, new techniques are needed to ensure that circuits are robust and optimized despite process variations and possible chaotic behavior. In this thesis, we develop a methodology for optimization and verification of AMS circuits advancing three frontiers in the variability-aware design flow. The first frontier is a robust circuit sizing methodology wherein a multi-level circuit optimization approach is proposed. The optimization is conducted in two phases. First, a global sizing phase powered by a regional sensitivity analysis to quickly scout the feasible design space that reduces the optimization search. Second, nominal sizing step based on space mapping of two AMS circuits models at different levels of abstraction is developed for the sake of breaking the re-design loop without performance penalties. The second frontier concerns a dynamics verification scheme of the circuit behavior (i.e., study the chaotic vs. stochastic circuit behavior). It is based on a surrogate generation approach and a statistical proof by contradiction technique using Gaussian Kernel measure in the state space domain. The last frontier focus on quantitative verification approaches to predict parametric yield for both a single and multiple circuit performance constraints. The single performance approach is based on a combination of geometrical intertwined reachability analysis and a non-parametric statistical verification scheme. On the other hand, the multiple performances approach involves process parameter reduction, state space based pattern matching, and multiple hypothesis testing procedures. The performance of the proposed methodology is demonstrated on several benchmark analog and mixed signal circuits. The optimization approach greatly improves computational efficiency while locating a comparable/better design point than other approaches. Moreover, great improvements were achieved using our verification methods with many orders of speedup compared to existing techniques

    After more than three decades of electronic design automation, most layouts for analog integrated circuits are still handcrafted in a laborious manual fashion today. Obverse to the highly automated synthesis tools in the digital domain (coping with the quantitative difficulty of packing more and more components onto a single chip – a desire well known as More Moore), analog layout automation struggles with the many diverse and heavily correlated functional requirements that turn the analog design problem into a More than Moore challenge. Facing this qualitative complexity, seasoned layout engineers rely on their comprehensive expert knowledge to consider all design constraints that uncompromisingly need to be satisfied. This usually involves both formally specified and nonformally communicated pieces of expert knowledge, which entails an explicit and implicit consideration of design constraints, respectively. Existing automation approaches can be basically divided into optimization algorithms (where constraint consideration occurs explicitly) and procedural generators (where constraints can only be taken into account implicitly). As investigated in this thesis, these two automation strategies follow two fundamentally different paradigms denoted as top-down automation and bottom-up automation. The major trait of top-down automation is that it requires a thorough formalization of the problem to enable a self-intelligent solution finding, whereas a bottom-up automatism –controlled by parameters– merely reproduces solutions that have been preconceived by a layout expert in advance. Since the strengths of one paradigm may compensate the weaknesses of the other, it is assumed that a combination of both paradigms –called bottom-up meets top-down– has much more potential to tackle the analog design problem in its entirety than either optimization-based or generator-based approaches alone. Against this background, the thesis at hand presents Self-organized Wiring and Arrangement of Responsive Modules (SWARM), an interdisciplinary methodology addressing the design problem with a decentralized multi-agent system. Its basic principle, similar to the roundup of a sheep herd, is to let responsive mobile layout modules (implemented as context-aware procedural generators) interact with each other inside a user-defined layout zone. Each module is allowed to autonomously move, rotate and deform itself, while a supervising control organ successively tightens the layout zone to steer the interaction towards increasingly compact (and constraint compliant) layout arrangements. Considering various principles of self-organization and incorporating ideas from existing decentralized systems, SWARM is able to evoke the phenomenon of emergence: although each module only has a limited viewpoint and selfishly pursues its personal objectives, remarkable overall solutions can emerge on the global scale. Several examples exhibit this emergent behavior in SWARM, and it is particularly interesting that even optimal solutions can arise from the module interaction. Further examples demonstrate SWARM’s suitability for floorplanning purposes and its application to practical place-and-route problems. The latter illustrates how the interacting modules take care of their respective design requirements implicitly (i.e., bottom-up) while simultaneously paying respect to high level constraints (such as the layout outline imposed top-down by the supervising control organ). Experimental results show that SWARM can outperform optimization algorithms and procedural generators both in terms of layout quality and design productivity. From an academic point of view, SWARM’s grand achievement is to tap fertile virgin soil for future works on novel bottom-up meets top-down automatisms. These may one day be the key to close the automation gap in analog layout design.Nach mehr als drei Jahrzehnten Entwurfsautomatisierung werden die meisten Layouts für analoge integrierte Schaltkreise heute immer noch in aufwändiger Handarbeit entworfen. Gegenüber den hochautomatisierten Synthesewerkzeugen im Digitalbereich (die sich mit dem quantitativen Problem auseinandersetzen, mehr und mehr Komponenten auf einem einzelnen Chip unterzubringen – bestens bekannt als More Moore) kämpft die analoge Layoutautomatisierung mit den vielen verschiedenen und stark korrelierten funktionalen Anforderungen, die das analoge Entwurfsproblem zu einer More than Moore Herausforderung machen. Angesichts dieser qualitativen Komplexität bedarf es des umfassenden Expertenwissens erfahrener Layouter um sämtliche Entwurfsconstraints, die zwingend eingehalten werden müssen, zu berücksichtigen. Meist beinhaltet dies formal spezifiziertes als auch nicht-formal übermitteltes Expertenwissen, was eine explizite bzw. implizite Constraint Berücksichtigung nach sich zieht. Existierende Automatisierungsansätze können grundsätzlich unterteilt werden in Optimierungsalgorithmen (wo die Constraint Berücksichtigung explizit erfolgt) und prozedurale Generatoren (die Constraints nur implizit berücksichtigen können). Wie in dieser Arbeit eruiert wird, folgen diese beiden Automatisierungsstrategien zwei grundlegend unterschiedlichen Paradigmen, bezeichnet als top-down Automatisierung und bottom-up Automatisierung. Wesentliches Merkmal der top-down Automatisierung ist die Notwendigkeit einer umfassenden Problemformalisierung um eine eigenintelligente Lösungsfindung zu ermöglichen, während ein bottom-up Automatismus –parametergesteuert– lediglich Lösungen reproduziert, die vorab von einem Layoutexperten vorgedacht wurden. Da die Stärken des einen Paradigmas die Schwächen des anderen ausgleichen können, ist anzunehmen, dass eine Kombination beider Paradigmen –genannt bottom-up meets top down– weitaus mehr Potenzial hat, das analoge Entwurfsproblem in seiner Gesamtheit zu lösen als optimierungsbasierte oder generatorbasierte Ansätze für sich allein. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt die vorliegende Arbeit Self-organized Wiring and Arrangement of Responsive Modules (SWARM) vor, eine interdisziplinäre Methodik, die das Entwurfsproblem mit einem dezentralisierten Multi-Agenten-System angeht. Das Grundprinzip besteht darin, ähnlich dem Zusammentreiben einer Schafherde, reaktionsfähige mobile Layoutmodule (realisiert als kontextbewusste prozedurale Generatoren) in einer benutzerdefinierten Layoutzone interagieren zu lassen. Jedes Modul darf sich selbständig bewegen, drehen und verformen, wobei ein übergeordnetes Kontrollorgan die Zone schrittweise verkleinert, um die Interaktion auf zunehmend kompakte (und constraintkonforme) Layoutanordnungen hinzulenken. Durch die Berücksichtigung diverser Selbstorganisationsgrundsätze und die Einarbeitung von Ideen bestehender dezentralisierter Systeme ist SWARM in der Lage, das Phänomen der Emergenz hervorzurufen: obwohl jedes Modul nur eine begrenzte Sichtweise hat und egoistisch seine eigenen Ziele verfolgt, können sich auf globaler Ebene bemerkenswerte Gesamtlösungen herausbilden. Mehrere Beispiele veranschaulichen dieses emergente Verhalten in SWARM, wobei besonders interessant ist, dass sogar optimale Lösungen aus der Modulinteraktion entstehen können. Weitere Beispiele demonstrieren SWARMs Eignung zwecks Floorplanning sowie die Anwendung auf praktische Place-and-Route Probleme. Letzteres verdeutlicht, wie die interagierenden Module ihre jeweiligen Entwurfsanforderungen implizit (also: bottom-up) beachten, während sie gleichzeitig High-Level-Constraints berücksichtigen (z.B. die Layoutkontur, die top-down vom übergeordneten Kontrollorgan auferlegt wird). Experimentelle Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Optimierungsalgorithmen und prozedurale Generatoren von SWARM sowohl bezüglich Layoutqualität als auch Entwurfsproduktivität übertroffen werden können. Aus akademischer Sicht besteht SWARMs große Errungenschaft in der Erschließung fruchtbaren Neulands für zukünftige Arbeiten an neuartigen bottom-up meets top-down Automatismen. Diese könnten eines Tages der Schlüssel sein, um die Automatisierungslücke im analogen Layoutentwurf zu schließen

    Formale Verifikationsmethodiken für nichtlineare analoge Schaltungen

    The objective of this thesis is to develop new methodologies for formal verification of nonlinear analog circuits. Therefore, new approaches to discrete modeling of analog circuits, specification of analog circuit properties and formal verification algorithms are introduced. Formal approaches to verification of analog circuits are not yet introduced into industrial design flows and still subject to research. Formal verification proves specification conformance for all possible input conditions and all possible internal states of a circuit. Automatically proving that a model of the circuit satisfies a declarative machine-readable property specification is referred to as model checking. Equivalence checking proves the equivalence of two circuit implementations. Starting from the state of the art in modeling analog circuits for simulation-based verification, discrete modeling of analog circuits for state space-based formal verification methodologies is motivated in this thesis. In order to improve the discrete modeling of analog circuits, a new trajectory-directed partitioning algorithm was developed in the scope of this thesis. This new approach determines the partitioning of the state space parallel or orthogonal to the trajectories of the state space dynamics. Therewith, a high accuracy of the successor relation is achieved in combination with a lower number of states necessary for a discrete model of equal accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art hyperbox-approach. The mapping of the partitioning to a discrete analog transition structure (DATS) enables the application of formal verification algorithms. By analyzing digital specification concepts and the existing approaches to analog property specification, the requirements for a new specification language for analog properties have been discussed in this thesis. On the one hand, it shall meet the requirements for formal specification of verification approaches applied to DATS models. On the other hand, the language syntax shall be oriented on natural language phrases. By synthesis of these requirements, the analog specification language (ASL) was developed in the scope of this thesis. The verification algorithms for model checking, that were developed in combination with ASL for application to DATS models generated with the new trajectory-directed approach, offer a significant enhancement compared to the state of the art. In order to prepare a transition of signal-based to state space-based verification methodologies, an approach to transfer transient simulation results from non-formal test bench simulation flows into a partial state space representation in form of a DATS has been developed in the scope of this thesis. As has been demonstrated by examples, the same ASL specification that was developed for formal model checking on complete discrete models could be evaluated without modifications on transient simulation waveforms. An approach to counterexample generation for the formal ASL model checking methodology offers to generate transition sequences from a defined starting state to a specification-violating state for inspection in transient simulation environments. Based on this counterexample generation, a new formal verification methodology using complete state space-covering input stimuli was developed. By conducting a transient simulation with these complete state space-covering input stimuli, the circuit adopts every state and transition that were visited during stimulus generation. An alternative formal verification methodology is given by retransferring the transient simulation responses to a DATS model and by applying the ASL verification algorithms in combination with an ASL property specification. Moreover, the complete state space-covering input stimuli can be applied to develop a formal equivalence checking methodology. Therewith, the equivalence of two implementations can be proven for every inner state of both systems by comparing the transient simulation responses to the complete-coverage stimuli of both circuits. In order to visually inspect the results of the newly introduced verification methodologies, an approach to dynamic state space visualization using multi-parallel particle simulation was developed. Due to the particles being randomly distributed over the complete state space and moving corresponding to the state space dynamics, another perspective to the system's behavior is provided that covers the state space and hence offers formal results. The prototypic implementations of the formal verification methodologies developed in the scope of this thesis have been applied to several example circuits. The acquired results for the new approaches to discrete modeling, specification and verification algorithms all demonstrate the capability of the new verification methodologies to be applied to complex circuit blocks and their properties.Gegenstand dieser Dissertation ist die Entwicklung neuer Methodiken zur formalen Verifikation nichtlinearer analoger elektronischer Schaltungen. Dazu werden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entstandene neue Ansätze in den Bereichen verifikationsgerechte diskrete Modellierung analoger Schaltungen, Spezifikation analoger Schaltungseigenschaften und formale Verifikationsalgorithmen vorgestellt. Ausgehend vom Stand der Technik der Modellierung analoger Schaltungen für die simulationsbasierte Verifikation wird im Rahmen dieser Arbeit die diskrete Modellierung analoger Schaltungen für zustandsraumbasierte formale Verifikationsverfahren betrachtet. Dazu wurde ein neuer Ansatz zur diskreten Modellierung entwickelt, der die Aufteilungsstruktur anhand der Trajektorien der Vektorfelddynamik bestimmt. So wird eine hohe Genauigkeit der Nachfolgerrelation ermöglicht, woraus eine niedrigere Zahl an Zuständen für ein diskretes Modell gleicher Genauigkeit im Vergleich mit dem bisherigen Stand der Technik folgt. Die Abbildung der Trajektorien-gesteuerten Partitionierung auf eine diskrete analoge Transitionsstruktur (DATS) erlaubt die Anwendung von formalen Verifikationsalgorithmen. Die formale Spezifikation von Eigenschaften in ersten Ansätzen zum Model Checking analoger Schaltungen hat sich stark an den bestehenden temporallogischen Verfahren aus dem Bereich digitaler Hardware orientiert. Ausgehend von einer Analyse digitaler Spezifikationskonzepte und der bestehenden Ansätze für analoge Eigenschaften wurden Anforderungen an eine neue Spezifikationssprache in dieser Arbeit abgeleitet. Die aus diesen Anforderungen im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entwickelte analoge Spezifikationssprache "Analog Specification Language" (ASL) basiert auf einer natürlichsprachlichen Kapselung temporallogischer Operationen, die mit erweiterten Algorithmen zur Transitionspfadbestimmung, Durchführung von Berechnungen auf Zustandsparametern und Oszillationsbestimmung eine hohe Ausdrucksstärke analoger Eigenschaften mit einer anwenderfreundlichen Syntax kombinieren konnte. Die zusammen mit ASL entwickelten Model Checking-Verifikationsalgorithmen zur Auswertung von ASL-Spezifikationen auf einem mit dem Trajektorien-gesteuerten Diskretisierungsverfahren erzeugten DATS-Modell bilden eine wesentliche Erweiterung zum Stand der Technik. Um einen Übergang der Verifikation von signalbasierten zu zustandsraumbasierten Methodiken zu ermöglichen, wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ein Ansatz entwickelt, der die Übertragung von transienten Simulationsergebnissen aus nicht-formalen Testbench-Simulationsumgebungen in eine partielle DATS-Zustandsraumdarstellung ermöglicht. Damit kann, wie anhand von Beispielen gezeigt werden konnte, die gleiche ASL-Spezifikation für Eigenschaften eines vollständigen diskreten Modells ohne Modifikation auch auf Simulationsergebnissen ausgewertet werden. Ein für das formale ASL-basierte Model Checking entwickelter Ansatz zur Erzeugung von Gegenbeispielen für als spezifikationsverletzend identifizierte Zustandsraumgebiete erlaubt es, Transitionsfolgen von einem definierten Startzustand zu einem spezifikationsverletzenden Zustand zu ermitteln. Auf Basis dieses Gegenbeispiel-Verfahrens wurde eine neue formale Eigenschaftsverifikationsmethodik mittels vollständig den Zustandsraum einer Schaltung abdeckenden Eingangsstimuli entwickelt. Die vollständig den Zustandsraum abdeckenden Eingangsstimuli bieten noch eine weitere Anwendungsmöglichkeit im Bereich des Äquivalenzvergleichs. Die im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entwickelte Methodik zum formalen Äquivalenzvergleich auf Basis der vollständig den Zustandsraum abdeckenden Eingangsstimuli ersetzt die anwenderdefinierten Eingangsstimuli durch die vollständig den Zustandsraum abdeckenden. So kann die Äquivalenz für jeden möglichen Zustand der zu vergleichenden Implementierungen anhand eines automatisierten Vergleichs der Simulationsergebnisse beider Implementierungen gezeigt werden. Um die Ergebnisse der neu eingeführten formalen Verifikationsmethodiken visuell zu untersuchen wurde ein Verfahren entwickelt, das den Zustandsraum und seine Dynamik mittels eines Partikel-Simulationsansatzes visualisiert. Da die Partikel über den gesamten Zustandsraum randomisiert verteilt werden und sich dann gemäß der Vektorfelddynamik fortbewegen, kann auch hier ein Einblick in das Systemverhalten gewonnen werden, der eine weitestgehend vollständige und somit formale Repräsentation des Zustandsraums bietet. Die prototypische Implementierung der im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entwickelten formalen Verifikationsmethodiken wurde auf zahlreiche Beispielschaltungen angewendet. Die Ergebnisse für die neuen Ansätze zur diskreten Modellierung, zur Spezifikation und zu Verifikationsalgorithmen analoger Schaltungen zeigen, dass die aus diesen Ansätzen erzeugten Verifikationsmethodiken erfolgreich auf komplexe Zustandsraumstrukturen angewendet werden können

    Structure discovery techniques for circuit design and process model visualization

    Graphs are one of the most used abstractions in many knowledge fields because of the easy and flexibility by which graphs can represent relationships between objects. The pervasiveness of graphs in many disciplines means that huge amounts of data are available in graph form, allowing many opportunities for the extraction of useful structure from these graphs in order to produce insight into the data. In this thesis we introduce a series of techniques to resolve well-known challenges in the areas of digital circuit design and process mining. The underlying idea that ties all the approaches together is discovering structures in graphs. We show how many problems of practical importance in these areas can be solved utilizing both common and novel structure mining approaches. In the area of digital circuit design, this thesis proposes automatically discovering frequent, repetitive structures in a circuit netlist in order to improve the quality of physical planning. These structures can be used during floorplanning to produce regular designs, which are known to be highly efficient and economical. At the same time, detecting these repeating structures can exponentially reduce the total design time. The second focus of this thesis is in the area of the visualization of process models. Process mining is a recent area of research which centers on studying the behavior of real-life systems and their interactions with the environment. Complicated process models, however, hamper this goal. By discovering the important structures in these models, we propose a series of methods that can derive visualization-friendly process models with minimal loss in accuracy. In addition, and combining the areas of circuit design and process mining, this thesis opens the area of specification mining in asynchronous circuits. Instead of the usual design flow, which involves synthesizing circuits from specifications, our proposal discovers specifications from implemented circuits. This area allows for many opportunities for verification and re-synthesis of asynchronous circuits. The proposed methods have been tested using real-life benchmarks, and the quality of the results compared to the state-of-the-art.Els grafs són una de les representacions abstractes més comuns en molts camps de recerca, gràcies a la facilitat i flexibilitat amb la que poden representar relacions entre objectes. Aquesta popularitat fa que una gran quantitat de dades es puguin trobar en forma de graf, i obre moltes oportunitats per a extreure estructures d'aquest grafs, útils per tal de donar una intuïció millor de les dades subjacents. En aquesta tesi introduïm una sèrie de tècniques per resoldre reptes habitualment trobats en les àrees de disseny de circuits digitals i mineria de processos industrials. La idea comú sota tots els mètodes proposats es descobrir automàticament estructures en grafs. En la tesi es mostra que molts problemes trobats a la pràctica en aquestes àrees poden ser resolts utilitzant nous mètodes de descobriment d'estructures. En l'àrea de disseny de circuits, proposem descobrir, automàticament, estructures freqüents i repetitives en les definicions del circuit per tal de millorar la qualitat de les etapes posteriors de planificació física. Les estructures descobertes poden fer-se servir durant la planificació per produir dissenys regulars, que son molt més econòmics d'implementar. Al mateix temps, la descoberta i ús d'aquestes estructures pot reduir exponencialment el temps total de disseny. El segon punt focal d'aquesta tesi és en l'àrea de la visualització de models de processos industrials. La mineria de processos industrials es un tema jove de recerca que es centra en estudiar el comportament de sistemes reals i les interaccions d'aquests sistemes amb l'entorn. No obstant, quan d'aquest anàlisi s'obtenen models massa complexos visualment, l'estudi n'és problemàtic. Proposem una sèrie de mètodes que, gràcies al descobriment automàtic de les estructures més importants, poden generar models molt més fàcils de visualitzar que encara descriuen el comportament del sistema amb gran precisió. Combinant les àrees de disseny de circuits i mineria de processos, aquesta tesi també obre un nou tema de recerca: la mineria d'especificacions per circuits asíncrons. En l'estil de disseny asíncron habitual, sintetitzadors automàtics generen circuits a partir de les especificacions. En aquesta tesi proposem el pas invers: descobrir automàticament les especificacions de circuits ja implementats. Així, creem noves oportunitats per a la verificació i la re-síntesi de circuits asíncrons. Els mètodes proposats en aquesta tesi s'han validat fent servir dades obtingudes d'aplicacions pràctiques, i en comparem els resultats amb els mètodes existents

    Validation and optimization of analog circuits using randomized search algorithms

    Analog circuits represent a large percentage of the chips used in mobile computing, communication devices, electric vehicles, and portable medical equipment today. Rapid scaling and shrinking chip geometrics introduce new challenging problems in verification, validation, and optimization of analog circuits. These problems include test generation and compression, runtime monitoring and analyzing the worst-case behaviors. State of the art techniques in Monte Carlo are unable to address these problems effectively. Consequently, designing an efficient and scalable CAD algorithm to address such problems is highly desirable.  In this thesis, we introduce Duplex, a methodology for search and optimization. Duplex supports optimizing nonconvex nonlinear functions and functionals. We use duplex to solve problems in analog validation and machine learning. Duplex uses random tree data structures. Duplex is based on partitioning and separating the problem space into multiple smaller spaces such as input, state and the function space. Duplex simultaneously controls, biases and monitors the growth of the random trees in the partitioned spaces. We have used the duplex framework to solve practical problems in analog and mixed signal validation like directed input stimuli generation, compressing analog stress tests, worst-case eye diagram analysis, performance optimization, machine learning, and monitoring runtime behaviors of analog circuits. We used Duplex for validation and optimization of analog circuits. Duplex automatically generates input stimuli that expose bugs and improves coverage. Duplex automatically finds input corners that result in worst-case eye diagrams. Duplex simultaneously explores the parameter and performance spaces of analog circuits to optimize the circuit for best performance. We monitored the random trees and circuit execution against the specification properties described in formal languages. We formulated many challenging problems in the analog circuits, such as test compression and eye diagram analysis, as functional optimization problems. We use Duplex to solve these functional optimization problems.  We propose the Duplex algorithm as an optimization algorithm to posit the framework to other domains. Duplex can address nonlinear and functional optimization problems in continuous and discrete spaces such as design-space exploration and supervised and unsupervised machine learning. The advantages of the duplex framework are efficiency, scalability and versatility. We consistently show orders of magnitude speedup improvements over the state of the art while objectively improving the quality of results. For generating input stimuli, duplex is the first technique that simultaneously does directed input stimulus generation and increases test coverage. We show over two orders of magnitude speedup over Monte Carlo simulations. For runtime monitoring, we check a large scalable circuit against a very expressive set of formal properties that were not possible to monitor before. For generating worst-case eye diagram, we show at least 20×20\times speedup and better quality of results in comparison to the state of the art. Duplex is the first work to provide transient test compression for analog circuits. We compress stress tests up to 96\%. We optimize analog circuits using Duplex and we show speedup and improved results with respect to the state of the art. We use Duplex to train supervised and unsupervised models and show improved accuracy in all cases

    Techniques for the formal verification of analog and mixed- signal designs

    Embedded systems are becoming a core technology in a growing range of electronic devices. Cornerstones of embedded systems are analog and mixed signal (AMS) designs, which are integrated circuits required at the interfaces with the real world environment. The verification of AMS designs is concerned with the assurance of correct functionality, in addition to checking whether an AMS design is robust with respect to different types of inaccuracies like parameter tolerances, nonlinearities, etc. The verification framework described in this thesis is composed of two proposed methodologies each concerned with a class of AMS designs, i.e., continuous-time AMS designs and discrete-time AMS designs. The common idea behind both methodologies is built on top of Bounded Model Checking (BMC) algorithms. In BMC, we search for a counter-example for a property verified against the design model for bounded number of verification steps. If a concrete counter-example is found, then the verification is complete and reports a failure, otherwise, we need to increment the number of steps until property validation is achieved. In general, the verification is not complete because of limitations in time and memory needed for the verification. To alleviate this problem, we observed that under certain conditions and for some classes of specification properties, the verification can be complete if we complement the BMC with other methods such as abstraction and constraint based verification methods. To test and validate the proposed approaches, we developed a prototype implementation in Mathematica and we targeted analog and mixed signal systems, like oscillator circuits, switched capacitor based designs, Delta-Sigma modulators for our initial tests of this approach
