    CLARIN, the "Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure", has established itself as a major player in the field of research infrastructures for the humanities. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the organization, its members, its goals and its functioning, as well as of the tools and resources hosted by the infrastructure. The many contributors representing various fields, from computer science to law to psychology, analyse a wide range of topics, such as the technology behind the CLARIN infrastructure, the use of CLARIN resources in diverse research projects, the achievements of selected national CLARIN consortia, and the challenges that CLARIN has faced and will face in the future. The book will be published in 2022, 10 years after the establishment of CLARIN as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium by the European Commission (Decision 2012/136/EU)

    Automated Fake News detection using computational Forensic Linguistics

    In our society, everyone has access to the internet and can post anything about any topic at any time. Despite its many advantages, this possibility brought along a serious problem: Fake News. Fake News is news that is not real for not following journalism principles. Instead, Fake News try to mimic the look and feel of real news with the intent to disinform the reader. However, what makes Fake News a real problem is the influence that it can have on our society. Lay people are attracted to this kind of news and often give more attention to them than truthful accounts. Despite the development of systems to detect Fake News, most are based on fact-checking methods, which are unfit when the news's truth is distorted, exaggerated, or even placed out of context. We aim to detect Portuguese Fake News using machine learning techniques with a Forensic Linguistic approach. Contrary to previous approaches, our approach builds upon linguistic and stylistic analysis methods that have been tried and tested in Forensic Linguistic analysis. After collecting the corpus from multiple sources, we formulated the task as a text classification problem and demonstrated the proposed classifier's capability for detecting Fake News. The results reported are promising, achieving high accuracies on the test data

    Attention Focusing for Neural Machine Translation by Bridging Source and Target Embeddings

    In neural machine translation, a source sequence of words is encoded into a vector from which a target sequence is generated in the decoding phase. Differently from statistical machine translation, the associations between source words and their possible target counterparts are not explicitly stored. Source and target words are at the two ends of a long information processing procedure, mediated by hidden states at both the source encoding and the target decoding phases. This makes it possible that a source word is incorrectly translated into a target word that is not any of its admissible equivalent counterparts in the target language. In this paper, we seek to somewhat shorten the distance between source and target words in that procedure, and thus strengthen their association, by means of a method we term bridging source and target word embeddings. We experiment with three strategies: (1) a source-side bridging model, where source word embeddings are moved one step closer to the output target sequence; (2) a target-side bridging model, which explores the more relevant source word embeddings for the prediction of the target sequence; and (3) a direct bridging model, which directly connects source and target word embeddings seeking to minimize errors in the translation of ones by the others. Experiments and analysis presented in this paper demonstrate that the proposed bridging models are able to significantly improve quality of both sentence translation, in general, and alignment and translation of individual source words with target words, in particular.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures.     A Plataforma Europeana foi criada em 2005 e aberta ao público em 2008, pretendendo assumir-se como um espaço onde cada cidadão pudesse encontrar, em vinte e duas línguas - número sempre em crescimento - um repositório vivo da cultura europeia. Desde aí não tem parado de crescer, procurando organizar, de um modo tão amigável quanto possível, a quantidade extraordinária de documentos digitalizados (texto, imagem, vídeo, som, etc.). Oferecendo ferramentas de investigação e filtros sofisticados, a Europeana é um espaço educativo, de lazer e de investigação, mediado pela tecnologia, com conteúdos educacionais que ultrapassam os 20 milhões. A Agenda Digital europeia pretende melhorar a disponibilidade e a acessibilidade à memória cultural europeia e o Europeana Digital Service Infraestructure (DSI) contribui para este desiderato procurando assegurar que todos usufruem dos benefícios da revolução tecnológica nos serviços digitais no setor da cultura. Os projetos DSI têm envolvido um número cada vez maior de professores de muitos países da Europa, procurando um efeito multiplicador do uso da plataforma e, paralelamente a alteração de metodologias e estratégias no ensino. Conhecer o portal Europeana, as suas potencialidades educativas, e as alterações provocadas na prática letiva dos professores que usam os seus recursos digitalizados, foi o que se pretendeu no desenvolvimento deste projeto, que envolveu 75 professores membros do User-group Europeana e que permitiu alcançar algumas conclusões no que diz respeito a uma aprendizagem mais ativa e mais centrada no aluno, e num professor que se envolve e cresce profissionalmente.The Europeana Platform was created in 2005 and opened to the public in 2008, aiming to become a space where each citizen could find, in twenty-two languages - an ever-growing number - a living repository of European culture. Since then, it has not stopped growing, trying to organize, in a friendly way, the extraordinary number of digitized documents (text, image, video, sound, etc.). Offering sophisticated research tools and filters, Europeana is an educational, leisure and research space, mediated by technology, with educational content that exceeds 20 million. The European Digital Agenda aims to improve the availability and accessibility of European cultural memory and the Europeana Digital Service Infrastructure (DSI) contributes to this aim by seeking to ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of the technological revolution in digital services in the cultural sector. The DSI projects have involved an increasing number of teachers from many countries in Europe, looking for a multiplier effect of the use of the platform and, at the same time, changing methodologies and strategies in teaching. Knowing the Europeana portal, its educational potentialities, and the changes caused in the teaching practice of lecturers who use their digitalized resources, was what was intended in the development of this project, which involved 75 professors who are members of the User-group Europeana and that allowed to reach some conclusions regarding a more active and more studentcentered learning and a teacher who gets involved and grows professionally.A investigação realizada no âmbito deste Projeto está integrada nas linhas de investigação da Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento - Laboratório de Educação a Distância e eLearning (UID 4372/FCT), da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia do Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior
