Psychology and concept of person as aesthetic issues of the first version of Quincas Borba

Orientador: Jefferson CanoDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da LinguagemResumo: Essa dissertação aborda a psicologia e a concepção de pessoa humana e moral como mediações estéticas fundamentais do realismo de Machado de Assis, to-mando Quincas Borba, em sua primeira versão, como corpus de investigação. Embora utilize majoritariamente a fatura do texto tal como publicado entre 1886 a 1891 na revista A Estação, fundam minhas interrogações menos o hori-zonte editorial e mais o horizonte intelectual e histórico de elaboração do ro-mance. A dissertação levanta elementos estéticos dominantes na primeira ver-são e os examina à luz de uma constelação de problemas que extrapola esse romance em particular, fazendo referência ao arcabouço epistemológico do lite-rário e suas personagens-pessoas. Busco compreender como pressupostos esté-ticos levantados de textos críticos do escritor se fazem dispositivos de composi-ção do romance, resultando em uma poética preocupada com o que permeia as relações interpessoais e a subjetivação, e que institui a qualidade de "moral e humana" da pessoa como um efeito de relações ¿ e não como resultado de de-terminantes metafísicos ou científicos. A nucleação da representação a partir da pessoa moral e humana contraria, assim, determinismos postos na ordem ex-terna à composição estética. Desenvolvo essa questão, em primeiro lugar, a par-tir da obra de Machado de Assis, seus romances, críticas, crônicas e contos, e, depois, a partir da leitura de obras presentes em sua biblioteca pessoal, as quais contribuem para mapear possíveis referências sobre a psicologia humana, com especial atenção à entrada da noção de inconsciente em sua literatura, a qual também localizo e interpreto. Busco compreender, ainda, como ao mostrar por dentro a psicologia e as relações intersubjetivas de suas pessoas, Machado as enlaça ao processo social e econômico de passagem de uma sociedade de ba-se escravista para a ordem moderna e capitalista de relações monetarizadas. A noção de propriedade se torna nevrálgica no Quincas Borba, e aparece tanto nos termos da dominação sexual patriarcal, quanto no processo de avanço do capi-talismo naquela sociedade, donde surgem tensões em torno da subjetivação sob a forma do indivíduo, um modelo de inscrição dos sujeitos que os define a partir de relações de posse. Acessando o modo como as personagens-pessoa operam e contradizem a gramática de sua própria dominação, discuto, finalmente, como o romance expõe a erosão da validade das relações baseadas na propriedade da pessoa em siAbstract: This dissertation addresses psychology and the concept of the moral and hu-man person as fundamental aesthetic mediations of Machado de Assis¿s real-ism. It takes the novel Quincas Borba, in its first version, as the main corpus for the research. Although I mainly use the novel¿s text as it was published in the magazine A Estação between the years 1886 and 1891, my research inquiry is more grounded in the intellectual and historical dimension of the novel¿s ap-pearance than in its editorial aspect. The dissertation addresses aesthetic fea-tures that permeate the novel¿s first version and examines them in light of a constellation of issues that exceed this particular novel and refers to the epis-temological framework of the literary and the notion of person-like characters. I aim to understand how aesthetic assumptions raised from the writer¿s critiques become inner mechanisms for the novel¿s composition. Machado¿s poetics are concerned with the process of subjection and intersubjective relationships, and with what makes possible, in the literary construction, for that the quality of the "moral and human" person to emerge as an effect of relationality, rather than as a quality defined by metaphysics or scientific determinants. This way, cen-tering the mimesis in this conception of moral and human person contradicts determinisms established outside the aesthetic composition. I develop this is-sue, first, based on Machado de Assis¿ works, such as novels, critiques, short stories, and chronicles, and, secondly, based on books from his personal library, which help to map his references on human psychology. I pay special attention to the idea of the unconscious in his literature, which I also map and interpret. I aim to understand how, by showing from the inside the psychology and inter-subjective relationship of his characters as people-like, Machado ties them to the social and economic process of a society changing from one based on slavery to one based on the modern and capitalistic order of monetized relationships. The notion of property becomes central to Quincas Borba, and it appears both to express patriarchal sexual domination, and the arrival of capitalism in that slave-based society. The relationships within the novel also show the contradic-tions of the individual conception, a model of subjection where subjects define themselves and their relations to other by means of possessive relations.
