    Sensor Placement for Damage Localization in Sensor Networks

    The objective of this thesis is to formulate and solve the sensor placement problem for damage localization in a sensor network. A Bayesian estimation problem is formulated with the time-of-flight (ToF) measurements. In this model, ToF of lamb waves, which are generated and received by piezoelectric sensors, is the total time for each wave to be transmitted, reflected by the target, and received by the sensor. The ToF of the scattered lamb wave has characteristic information about the target location. By using the measurement model and prior information, the target location is estimated in a centralized sensor network with a Monte Carlo approach. Then we derive the Bayesian Fisher information matrix (B-FIM) and based on that posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB), which sets a limit on the mean squared error (MSE) of any Bayesian estimator. In addition, we develop an optimal sensor placement approach to achieve more accurate damage localization, which is based on minimizing the PCRLB. Simulation results show that the optimal sensor placement solutions lead to much lower estimation errors than some sub-optimal sensor placement solutions

    Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost, WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process (MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs

    Probabilistic Framework for Sensor Management

    A probabilistic sensor management framework is introduced, which maximizes the utility of sensor systems with many different sensing modalities by dynamically configuring the sensor system in the most beneficial way. For this purpose, techniques from stochastic control and Bayesian estimation are combined such that long-term effects of possible sensor configurations and stochastic uncertainties resulting from noisy measurements can be incorporated into the sensor management decisions

    LQG Control and Sensing Co-Design

    We investigate a Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control and sensing co-design problem, where one jointly designs sensing and control policies. We focus on the realistic case where the sensing design is selected among a finite set of available sensors, where each sensor is associated with a different cost (e.g., power consumption). We consider two dual problem instances: sensing-constrained LQG control, where one maximizes control performance subject to a sensor cost budget, and minimum-sensing LQG control, where one minimizes sensor cost subject to performance constraints. We prove no polynomial time algorithm guarantees across all problem instances a constant approximation factor from the optimal. Nonetheless, we present the first polynomial time algorithms with per-instance suboptimality guarantees. To this end, we leverage a separation principle, that partially decouples the design of sensing and control. Then, we frame LQG co-design as the optimization of approximately supermodular set functions; we develop novel algorithms to solve the problems; and we prove original results on the performance of the algorithms, and establish connections between their suboptimality and control-theoretic quantities. We conclude the paper by discussing two applications, namely, sensing-constrained formation control and resource-constrained robot navigation.Comment: Accepted to IEEE TAC.     dissertationWe are seeing an extensive proliferation of wireless devices including various types and forms of sensor nodes that are increasingly becoming ingrained in our daily lives. There has been a significant growth in wireless devices capabilities as well. This proliferation and rapid growth of wireless devices and their capabilities has led to the development of many distributed sensing and computing applications. In this dissertation, we propose and evaluate novel, efficient approaches for localization and computation offloading that harness distributed sensing and computing in wireless networks. In a significant part of this dissertation, we exploit distributed sensing to create efficient localization applications. First, using the sensing power of a set of Radio frequency (RF) sensors, we propose energy efficient approaches for target tracking application. Second, leveraging the sensing power of a distributed set of existing wireless devices, e.g., smartphones, internet-of-things devices, laptops, and modems, etc., we propose a novel approach to locate spectrum offenders. Third, we build efficient sampling approaches to select mobile sensing devices required for spectrum offenders localization. We also enhance our sampling approaches to take into account selfish behaviors of mobile devices. Finally, we investigate an attack on location privacy where the location of people moving inside a private area can be inferred using the radio characteristics of wireless links that are leaked by legitimate transmitters deployed inside the private area, and develop the first solution to mitigate this attack. While we focus on harnessing distributed sensing for localization in a big part of this dissertation, in the remaining part of this dissertation, we harness the computing power of nearby wireless devices for a computation offloading application. Specially, we propose a multidimensional auction for allocating the tasks of a job among nearby mobile devices based on their computational capabilities and also the cost of computation at these devices with the goal of reducing the overall job completion time and being beneficial to all the parties involved

    Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge, and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control, learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity, localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature, and identify topics that require more research attention in the future

    Dynamic Reconfiguration in Camera Networks: A Short Survey

    There is a clear trend in camera networks towards enhanced functionality and flexibility, and a fixed static deployment is typically not sufficient to fulfill these increased requirements. Dynamic network reconfiguration helps to optimize the network performance to the currently required specific tasks while considering the available resources. Although several reconfiguration methods have been recently proposed, e.g., for maximizing the global scene coverage or maximizing the image quality of specific targets, there is a lack of a general framework highlighting the key components shared by all these systems. In this paper we propose a reference framework for network reconfiguration and present a short survey of some of the most relevant state-of-the-art works in this field, showing how they can be reformulated in our framework.     Radar networks: A review of features and challenges

    Networks of multiple radars are typically used for improving the coverage and tracking accuracy. Recently, such networks have facilitated deployment of commercial radars for civilian applications such as healthcare, gesture recognition, home security, and autonomous automobiles. They exploit advanced signal processing techniques together with efficient data fusion methods in order to yield high performance of event detection and tracking. This paper reviews outstanding features of radar networks, their challenges, and their state-of-the-art solutions from the perspective of signal processing.
