Scenarios and research issues for a network of information
This paper describes ideas and items of work within the
framework of the EU-funded 4WARD project. We present
scenarios where the current host-centric approach to infor-
mation storage and retrieval is ill-suited for and explain
how a new networking paradigm emerges, by adopting the
information-centric network architecture approach, which
we call Network of Information (NetInf). NetInf capital-
izes on a proposed identifier/locator split and allows users
to create, distribute, and retrieve information using a com-
mon infrastructure without tying data to particular hosts.
NetInf introduces the concepts of information and data ob-
jects. Data objects correspond to the particular bits and
bytes of a digital object, such as text file, a specific encod-
ing of a song or a video. Information objects can be used
to identify other objects irrespective of their particular dig-
ital representation. After discussing the benefits of such an
indirection, we consider the impact of NetInf with respect
to naming and governance in the Future Internet. Finally,
we provide an outlook on the research scope of NetInf along
with items for future work
Digital Image Access & Retrieval
The 33th Annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing, held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in March of 1996, addressed the theme of "Digital Image Access & Retrieval." The papers from this conference cover a wide range of topics concerning digital imaging technology for visual resource collections. Associating low-level features with semantic concepts using video objects and relevance feedback
The holy grail of multimedia indexing and retrieval is developing algorithms capable of imitating human abilities in distinguishing and recognising semantic concepts within the content, so that retrieval can be based on âreal worldâ concepts that come naturally to users. In this paper, we discuss an approach to using segmented video objects as the midlevel connection between low-level features and semantic
concept description. In this paper, we consider a video object as a particular instance of a semantic concept and we
model the semantic concept as an average representation
of its instances. A system supporting object-based search
through a test corpus is presented that allows matching presegmented objects based on automatically extracted lowlevel features. In the system, relevance feedback is employed to drive the learning of the semantic model during
a regular search process
Utilizing a 3D game engine to develop a virtual design review system
A design review process is where information is exchanged between the designers and design reviewers to resolve any potential design related issues, and to ensure that the interests and goals of the owner are met. The effective execution of design review will minimize potential errors or conflicts, reduce the time for review, shorten the project life-cycle, allow for earlier occupancy, and ultimately translate into significant total project savings to the owner. However, the current methods of design review are still heavily relying on 2D paper-based format, sequential and lack central and integrated information base for efficient exchange and flow of information. There is thus a need for the use of a new medium that allow for 3D visualization of designs, collaboration among designers and design reviewers, and early and easy access to design review information. This paper documents the innovative utilization of a 3D game engine, the Torque Game Engine as the underlying tool and enabling technology for a design review system, the Virtual Design Review System for architectural designs. Two major elements are incorporated; 1) a 3D game engine as the driving tool for the development and implementation of design review processes, and 2) a virtual environment as the medium for design review, where visualization of design and design review information is based on sound principles of GUI design. The development of the VDRS involves two major phases; firstly, the creation of the assets and the assembly of the virtual environment, and secondly, the modification of existing functions or introducing new functionality through programming of the 3D game engine in order to support design review in a virtual environment. The features that are included in the VDRS are support for database, real-time collaboration across network, viewing and navigation modes, 3D object manipulation, parametric input, GUI, and organization for 3D objects
