CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
Privacy-Aware Recommender Systems Challenge on Twitter's Home Timeline
Recommender systems constitute the core engine of most social network
platforms nowadays, aiming to maximize user satisfaction along with other key
business objectives. Twitter is no exception. Despite the fact that Twitter
data has been extensively used to understand socioeconomic and political
phenomena and user behaviour, the implicit feedback provided by users on Tweets
through their engagements on the Home Timeline has only been explored to a
limited extent. At the same time, there is a lack of large-scale public social
network datasets that would enable the scientific community to both benchmark
and build more powerful and comprehensive models that tailor content to user
interests. By releasing an original dataset of 160 million Tweets along with
engagement information, Twitter aims to address exactly that. During this
release, special attention is drawn on maintaining compliance with existing
privacy laws. Apart from user privacy, this paper touches on the key challenges
faced by researchers and professionals striving to predict user engagements. It
further describes the key aspects of the RecSys 2020 Challenge that was
organized by ACM RecSys in partnership with Twitter using this dataset.Comment: 16 pages, 2 table
Counterfactual Estimation and Optimization of Click Metrics for Search Engines
Optimizing an interactive system against a predefined online metric is
particularly challenging, when the metric is computed from user feedback such
as clicks and payments. The key challenge is the counterfactual nature: in the
case of Web search, any change to a component of the search engine may result
in a different search result page for the same query, but we normally cannot
infer reliably from search log how users would react to the new result page.
Consequently, it appears impossible to accurately estimate online metrics that
depend on user feedback, unless the new engine is run to serve users and
compared with a baseline in an A/B test. This approach, while valid and
successful, is unfortunately expensive and time-consuming. In this paper, we
propose to address this problem using causal inference techniques, under the
contextual-bandit framework. This approach effectively allows one to run
(potentially infinitely) many A/B tests offline from search log, making it
possible to estimate and optimize online metrics quickly and inexpensively.
Focusing on an important component in a commercial search engine, we show how
these ideas can be instantiated and applied, and obtain very promising results
that suggest the wide applicability of these techniques
Video matching using DC-image and local features
This paper presents a suggested framework for video matching based on local features extracted from the DCimage of MPEG compressed videos, without decompression. The relevant arguments and supporting evidences are discussed for developing video similarity techniques that works directly on compressed videos, without decompression, and especially utilising small size images. Two experiments are carried to support the above. The first is comparing between the DC-image and I-frame, in terms of matching performance and the corresponding computation complexity. The second experiment compares between using local features and global features in video matching, especially in the compressed domain and with the small size images. The results confirmed that the use of DC-image, despite its highly reduced size, is promising as it produces at least similar (if not better) matching precision, compared to the full I-frame. Also, using SIFT, as a local feature, outperforms precision of most of the standard global features. On the other hand, its computation complexity is relatively higher, but it is still within the realtime margin. There are also various optimisations that can be done to improve this computation complexity
