Constellation Shaping for WDM systems using 256QAM/1024QAM with Probabilistic Optimization
In this paper, probabilistic shaping is numerically and experimentally
investigated for increasing the transmission reach of wavelength division
multiplexed (WDM) optical communication system employing quadrature amplitude
modulation (QAM). An optimized probability mass function (PMF) of the QAM
symbols is first found from a modified Blahut-Arimoto algorithm for the optical
channel. A turbo coded bit interleaved coded modulation system is then applied,
which relies on many-to-one labeling to achieve the desired PMF, thereby
achieving shaping gain. Pilot symbols at rate at most 2% are used for
synchronization and equalization, making it possible to receive input
constellations as large as 1024QAM. The system is evaluated experimentally on a
10 GBaud, 5 channels WDM setup. The maximum system reach is increased w.r.t.
standard 1024QAM by 20% at input data rate of 4.65 bits/symbol and up to 75% at
5.46 bits/symbol. It is shown that rate adaptation does not require changing of
the modulation format. The performance of the proposed 1024QAM shaped system is
validated on all 5 channels of the WDM signal for selected distances and rates.
Finally, it was shown via EXIT charts and BER analysis that iterative
demapping, while generally beneficial to the system, is not a requirement for
achieving the shaping gain.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, Journal of Lightwave Technology, 201
An overview of data acquisition, signal coding and data analysis techniques for MST radars
An overview is given of the data acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis techniques that are currently in use with high power MST/ST (mesosphere stratosphere troposphere/stratosphere troposphere) radars. This review supplements the works of Rastogi (1983) and Farley (1984) presented at previous MAP workshops. A general description is given of data acquisition and signal processing operations and they are characterized on the basis of their disparate time scales. Then signal coding, a brief description of frequently used codes, and their limitations are discussed, and finally, several aspects of statistical data processing such as signal statistics, power spectrum and autocovariance analysis, outlier removal techniques are discussed
Solar and Stellar Photospheric Abundances
The determination of photospheric abundances in late-type stars from
spectroscopic observations is a well-established field, built on solid
theoretical foundations. Improving those foundations to refine the accuracy of
the inferred abundances has proven challenging, but progress has been made. In
parallel, developments on instrumentation, chiefly regarding multi-object
spectroscopy, have been spectacular, and a number of projects are collecting
large numbers of observations for stars across the Milky Way and nearby
galaxies, promising important advances in our understanding of galaxy formation
and evolution. After providing a brief description of the basic physics and
input data involved in the analysis of stellar spectra, a review is made of the
analysis steps, and the available tools to cope with large observational
efforts. The paper closes with a quick overview of relevant ongoing and planned
spectroscopic surveys, and highlights of recent research on photospheric
abundances.Comment: Invited review to appear in Living Reviews in Solar Physics. 39

Multiple-Description Coding by Dithered Delta-Sigma Quantization
We address the connection between the multiple-description (MD) problem and
Delta-Sigma quantization. The inherent redundancy due to oversampling in
Delta-Sigma quantization, and the simple linear-additive noise model resulting
from dithered lattice quantization, allow us to construct a symmetric and
time-invariant MD coding scheme. We show that the use of a noise shaping filter
makes it possible to trade off central distortion for side distortion.
Asymptotically as the dimension of the lattice vector quantizer and order of
the noise shaping filter approach infinity, the entropy rate of the dithered
Delta-Sigma quantization scheme approaches the symmetric two-channel MD
rate-distortion function for a memoryless Gaussian source and MSE fidelity
criterion, at any side-to-central distortion ratio and any resolution. In the
optimal scheme, the infinite-order noise shaping filter must be minimum phase
and have a piece-wise flat power spectrum with a single jump discontinuity. An
important advantage of the proposed design is that it is symmetric in rate and
distortion by construction, so the coding rates of the descriptions are
identical and there is therefore no need for source splitting.Comment: Revised, restructured, significantly shortened and minor typos has

New Concept of PLC Modems: Multi-Carrier System for Frequency Selective Slow-Fading Channels Based on Layered SCCC Turbocodes
The article introduces a novel concept of a PLC modem as a complement to the existing G3 and PRIME standards for communications using medium- or high-voltage overhead or cable lines. The proposed concept is based on the fact that the levels of impulse noise and frequency selectivity are lower on high-voltage lines than on low-voltage ones. Also, the demands for “cost-effective” circuitry design are not so crucial as in the case of modems for low-voltage level. In contract to these positive conditions, however, there is the need to overcome much longer distances and to take into account low SNR on the receiving side. With respect to the listed reasons, our concept makes use of MCM, instead of OFDM. The assumption of low SNR is compensated through the use of an efficient channel coding based on a serially concatenated turbo code. In addition, MCM offers lower latency and PAPR compared to OFDM. Therefore, when using MCM, it is possible to excite the line with higher power. The proposed concept has been verified during experimental transmission of testing data over a real, 5 km long, 22kV overhead line
