Knowledge Discovery in the SCADA Databases Used for the Municipal Power Supply System

This scientific paper delves into the problems related to the develop-ment of intellectual data analysis system that could support decision making to manage municipal power supply services. The management problems of mu-nicipal power supply system have been specified taking into consideration modern tendencies shown by new technologies that allow for an increase in the energy efficiency. The analysis findings of the system problems related to the integrated computer-aided control of the power supply for the city have been given. The consideration was given to the hierarchy-level management decom-position model. The objective task targeted at an increase in the energy effi-ciency to minimize expenditures and energy losses during the generation and transportation of energy carriers to the Consumer, the optimization of power consumption at the prescribed level of the reliability of pipelines and networks and the satisfaction of Consumers has been defined. To optimize the support of the decision making a new approach to the monitoring of engineering systems and technological processes related to the energy consumption and transporta-tion using the technologies of geospatial analysis and Knowledge Discovery in databases (KDD) has been proposed. The data acquisition for analytical prob-lems is realized in the wireless heterogeneous medium, which includes soft-touch VPN segments of ZigBee technology realizing the 6LoWPAN standard over the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and also the segments of the networks of cellu-lar communications. JBoss Application Server is used as a server-based plat-form for the operation of the tools used for the retrieval of data collected from sensor nodes, PLC and energy consumption record devices. The KDD tools are developed using Java Enterprise Edition platform and Spring and ORM Hiber-nate technologies

Efficient Algorithms for Distributed Detection of Holes and Boundaries in Wireless Networks

We propose two novel algorithms for distributed and location-free boundary recognition in wireless sensor networks. Both approaches enable a node to decide autonomously whether it is a boundary node, based solely on connectivity information of a small neighborhood. This makes our algorithms highly applicable for dynamic networks where nodes can move or become inoperative. We compare our algorithms qualitatively and quantitatively with several previous approaches. In extensive simulations, we consider various models and scenarios. Although our algorithms use less information than most other approaches, they produce significantly better results. They are very robust against variations in node degree and do not rely on simplified assumptions of the communication model. Moreover, they are much easier to implement on real sensor nodes than most existing approaches.Comment: extended version of accepted submission to SEA 201

    Semantic Compression for Edge-Assisted Systems

A novel semantic approach to data selection and compression is presented for the dynamic adaptation of IoT data processing and transmission within "wireless islands", where a set of sensing devices (sensors) are interconnected through one-hop wireless links to a computational resource via a local access point. The core of the proposed technique is a cooperative framework where local classifiers at the mobile nodes are dynamically crafted and updated based on the current state of the observed system, the global processing objective and the characteristics of the sensors and data streams. The edge processor plays a key role by establishing a link between content and operations within the distributed system. The local classifiers are designed to filter the data streams and provide only the needed information to the global classifier at the edge processor, thus minimizing bandwidth usage. However, the better the accuracy of these local classifiers, the larger the energy necessary to run them at the individual sensors. A formulation of the optimization problem for the dynamic construction of the classifiers under bandwidth and energy constraints is proposed and demonstrated on a synthetic example.Comment: Presented at the Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA), February 17, 201
