An information literacy integration model and its application in higher education

    Get PDF
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a model for curricular integration of information literacy for undergraduate programs in higher education. Design/methodology/approach - Data are drawn from individual interviews at three universities in Australia and curricular integration working experience at a New Zealand university. Sociocultural theories are adopted in the research process and in the development of the model, Findings - Key characteristics of the curriculum integration of information literacy were identified and an information literacy integration model was developed. The S2J2 key behaviours for campus-wide multi-partner collaboration in information literacy integration were also identified. Research limitations/implications - The model was developed without including the employer needs. Through the process of further research, the point of view of the employer on how to provide information literacy education needs to be explored in order to strengthen the model in curricular design. Practical implications - The information literacy integration model was developed based on practical experience in higher education and has been applied in different undergraduate curricular programs. The model could be used or adapted by both librarians and academics when they integrate information literacy into an undergraduate curriculum from a lower level to a higher level. Originality/value - The information literacy integration model was developed based on recent PhD research. The model integrates curriculum, pedagogy and learning theories, information literacy theories, information literacy guidelines, people and collaborative together. The model provides a framework of how information literacy can be integrated into multiple courses across an undergraduate academic degree in higher education

    Third Grade Library Power!

    Get PDF
The process of curriculum design for a third grade information literacy skills unit was studied. Studies supporting the connection between a quality school library program and increased student achievement were examined for positive characteristics to be implemented into a third grade library program. State standards in reading, technology, and information skills were analyzed for integration into the design. The result is a third grade information literacy skills curriculum design for implementation into a library program. Implications for future third grade library curriculum improvements are discussed

Designing information literacy instruction for the life sciences

    Get PDF
Information literacy for the life sciences differs from other disciplines and requires an approach that addresses the specific needs of the curriculum and its students. This chapter focuses on the important aspects to consider when designing information literacy for the life sciences, including characteristics of the curriculum and students, opportunities to collaborate with instructors to integrate information literacy, and strategies for developing assessment-based approaches. It provides recommended resources, specific guidance, and practical suggestions for librarians responsible for information literacy instruction in the life sciences disciplines

Research on Personalized Learning Resource Recommendation Based on Knowledge Graph Technology

    Get PDF
In the face of the dilemma of learners\u27 learning loss and information overload in information resources, a personalized learning resource recommendation algorithm is proposed by conducting in-depth and extensive research on the knowledge graph. This algorithm relies on the similarity or correlation between learners\u27 characteristics and course knowledge (learning resources) for recommendation. It analyzes learners\u27 characteristics in depth from four aspects: data collection and processing, model construction, resource and path recommendation, and model application, and establishes a multi layered dynamic feature model for learners; Analyze the core elements of the curriculum knowledge graph, decompose the curriculum knowledge into nanoscale knowledge granularity, and construct a curriculum knowledge graph model. The experimental results indicate that this algorithm improves learners\u27 learning efficiency and promotes their personalized development

The purpose of this investigation is to analyze the effectiveness of the 2009 curriculum in terms of the acquisition of the English language skills of eleventh grade students at Rigoberto López Pérez Institute in the first semester of 2015. To carry out our purpose we used several materials to get all information that we needed, for instance we analyze several documents based on curriculum, and we designed an interview for the teacher and a survey for the students in order to get their perception about the new study plan. Those techniques were shown to be an effective way of analyzing the data. Adding that this research paper has a lot of information about what the curriculum is, the elements of a curriculum, the definition of it, the characteristics of a curriculum are, the types of curriculum, the educational planning and evaluation of learning in secondary education has, the methodological design of this research paper, the sociological approach, what type of research it is, the result and analysis of this research paper, among others. This research paper it is a compilation of many important documents about the curriculum which were studied and analyzed in order to get the more important and useful information to support this research

Connecting with the Y Generation: an analysis of factors associated with the academic performance of foundation IS students

[Abstract]: A strategy to overcome challenges associated with teaching a foundation Information Systems (IS) course to large cohorts of Business students has been highly successful. To further refine the strategy, a survey was conducted to better understand attitudes and computer experience of the students. This study revealed that factors such as gender, age, study mode, type of secondary school attended, level of previous computing studies, perceived knowledge, frequency of use and attitudes towards using computers did not predict academic performance. Academic performance and characteristics of students belonging to the Y Generation were also compared with those of the Older Generation. Differences between these generations were found to exist in relation to perceived knowledge, level of previous computing studies, and experience of formal computing studies. It is imperative that educators be aware of the characteristics of the growing Y Generation students. This research has raised critical curriculum issues for the development of foundation IS pedagogy

The characteristics of Virtual Learning Environments and issues concerning their implementation are presented. The role of libraries and library personnel to their support is reported. The term of information literacy and its relation with other "literacies" is clarified. Issues about the creation of a collaborative environment between the faculty and academic librarians are examined. The development of information literacy programs as an integral part of the curriculum is examined. Is concluded that, the success and growth of e-literacy programs, the implementation of VLEs and information literacy education, depends on the engagement and the collaboration of educational institutions, faculty and librarians. Finally is concluded that, the best practice for the information literacy programs should be their integration into the official curriculum

This descriptive research dealt with the programme and service satisfaction of graduates in terms of (1) Curriculum, (2) Career and Counseling Services, (3) Teaching Staff, and (4) Facilities at Universiti Utara Malaysia. Differences in satisfaction were also ascertained when the respondents were grouped by demographic characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, entry qualification, field of study, and work status. Data were gathered using a survey questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics via the SPSS at 0.05 significance level. Findings showed that, overall, the respondents were satisfied most with Facilities, followed by Curriculum and Teaching Staff, and then Career and Counseling Services. “Library” was rated the highest for Facilities, “inculcation of positive values” for Curriculum, “qualifications” for Teaching Staff, and “information on job and career opportunities and further studies” for Career and Counseling Services. There were significant differences in the respondents’ satisfaction across the four components when grouped by demographic characteristics. Recommendations are offered and the implications of the findings are discussed

This study contributes to the body of knowledge in leader development by examining how higher education programs in a female dominated profession assist learners in developing person-related characteristics that support leader development. A ten-part online survey was sent to directors of health information management (HIM) programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM). Results suggest an opportunity for improvement in the curriculum for development of person-related characteristics critical for leadership positions. In the interest of the progression of women these results should be taken into consideration
