    Get PDF
In a world of sustainable development, changes are going very fast, the main target of organizations especially the global and successful ones is to lead the market and increase their market share with a focus on having a long lifespan and sustainable working system both nationally and on the global scale. As such, the major role of managers is to understand and detect the new trends and challenges that influence their organizational sustainability. This should give organizations an opportunity to increase their market share and at same time to protect themselves from threats that may appear from these changes. In this paper we aim to explore those challenges related to sustainable development and analyze their potential impact on business and marketing strategies. Using the case of several organizations, these trends are highlighted and their benefits discussed. The ecological concerns with protecting the ecological systems, the ethical considerations when it comes to production and consumer concerns, globalization, the growing emerging markets, the rise of the sharing economy, accelerating technological trends, mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances, deregulation and privatization, in addition to changes in business practices (downsizing, outsourcing, offshoring and re-engineering) are all trends that are discussed in this paper. In light of this analysis, organizations must be flexible and ready to adjust to the external environmental changes that have huge impacts on their sustainability. Previous research have shown that the lifespan of organizations decreased due to these major changes of trends, so following and understanding these trends will be a competitive advantage for organizations in Lebanon and the world

The Role of the CIO and the CDO in an Organization’s Digital Transformation

    Get PDF
The CIO role often embodies both strategic as well as operational elements. However, the penetration of digital technologies into nearly every aspect of business has led many firms to create the role of a Chief Digital Officer (CDO) to oversee the establishment of digital capabilities in the company. This development has the potential for considerable redundancy between CIO and CDO roles and brings the CIO role to an inflection point. Through multiple interviews with executives of 19 firms, seven of which have a CDO, this paper explores the reasoning behind the CDO role, the need for which is often driven by digitization pressure, demand for organizational orchestration, aspects of the CIO role profile, and the digitization focus areas of the company. Moreover, this paper identifies four distinct CDO role-types (Evangelist, Coordinator, Innovator, and Advocate) and assesses the implications for the CIO role in the context of digital transformation

The term Internet of Things (IoT) is widely used and discussed. However, there is still no scientifically generally valid definition and therefore no uniform understanding of the term in practice. To counteract this, we present a possibility to limit the term with the help of applications in the IoT environment. Specifically, we analyze the use of IoT along the value chain of companies by conducting a structured literature analysis

Striking a Balance Between Physical and Digital Resources

    Get PDF
In various configurations—be they academic, archival, county, juvenile, monastic, national, personal, public, reference, or research, the library has been a fixture in human affairs for a long time. Digital — meaning, content or communication that is delivered through the internet, is 20 years old (but younger in parts). Basically, both approaches to organizing serve to structure information for access. However, digital is multiplying very fast and libraries all-round contemplate an existential crisis; the more hopeful librarians fret about physical and digital space. Yet, the crux of the matter is not about physical vs. digital: without doubt, the digital space of content or communication transmogrifies all walks of life and cannot be wished away; but, the physical space of libraries is time-tested, extremely valuable, and can surely offer more than currently meets the eye. Except for entirely virtual libraries, the symbiotic relationship between the physical and the digital is innately powerful: for superior outcomes, it must be recognized, nurtured, and leveraged; striking a balance between physical and digital resources can be accomplished. This paper examines the subject of delivering digital from macro, meso, and micro perspectives: it looks into complexity theory, digital strategy, and digitization

This short essay examines the current conditions in the US telecommunications sector (April 1999). We examine the impact of technological and regulatory change on market structure and business strategy. Among others, we examine the impact on pricing of digitization and the emergence of internet telephony. We briefly examine the impact of the 1996 Telecommunications Act on market structure and strategy in conjunction with the history of regulation and antitrust intervention in the telecommunications sector. After discussing the impact of wireless technologies, we conclude by venturing into some short term predictions. We express concern about the derailment of the implementation of the 1996 Act by the aggressive legal tactics of the entrenched monopolists (the local exchange carriers), and we point to the real danger that the intent of Congress in passing the 1996 Act to promote competition in telecommunications will not be realized. After discussing the impact of wireless technologies, we comment on the wave of mergers in the Telecommunications and cable industries.

Digital globalization is a new form of globalization. It brings about relevant changes regarding how business is conducted across borders, the flow of economic benefits, and broadening participation. The growth of data and information related to digital globalization determines that global economic, financial, and social connections increase through digital platforms. Covid-19 is causing a shock to the global economy that is proving to be both faster and more severe than the 2008 global financial crisis. If the current crisis is pushing towards deglobalization, at the same time, Covid-19 represents a challenge for digital globalization and the digital transformation of economies. This research contribution examines the process towards digital globalization that is characterizing the world economy, its impact on businesses, consumers, and governments. It also discusses the challenge that the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic is posing to the globalization and digital transformation of economies
