    Integrative Use of Information Extraction, Semantic Matchmaking and Adaptive Coupling Techniques in Support of Distributed Information Processing and Decision-Making

    In order to press maximal cognitive benefit from their social, technological and informational environments, military coalitions need to understand how best to exploit available information assets as well as how best to organize their socially-distributed information processing activities. The International Technology Alliance (ITA) program is beginning to address the challenges associated with enhanced cognition in military coalition environments by integrating a variety of research and development efforts. In particular, research in one component of the ITA ('Project 4: Shared Understanding and Information Exploitation') is seeking to develop capabilities that enable military coalitions to better exploit and distribute networked information assets in the service of collective cognitive outcomes (e.g. improved decision-making). In this paper, we provide an overview of the various research activities in Project 4. We also show how these research activities complement one another in terms of supporting coalition-based collective cognition

    LO-MATCH: A semantic platform for matching migrants' competences with labour market's needs

    Citizens' mobility and employability are receiving ever more attention by the European legislation. Various instruments have been defined to overcome lexical and semantic differences in the descriptions of qualifications, résumés and job profiles. However, the above differences still represent a significant constraint when abilities of non-European people have to be validated either for education and training or occupation purposes. In this work, a web platform that exploits semantic technologies to address such heterogeneity issues is presented. The platform allows migrants to annotate their knowledge, skills and competences in a shared format based on the European tools. The resulting knowledge base is then used to enable the automatic matchmaking of job seekers' abilities with companies' needs. The platform can additionally be used to support students and workers in the identification of their competence gap with respect to a given education or occupation opportunity, so that to personalize their further trainin

    Fuzzy context adaptation through conceptual situation spaces

    Context-adaptive information systems (IS) are highly desired across several application domains and usually rely on matching a particular real-world situation to a finite set of predefined situation parameters. To represent context parameters, semantic and non-semantic representation standards are widely used. However, describing the complex and diverse notion of specific situations is costly and may never reach semantic completeness. Whereas not any situation parameter completely equals another, the number of (predefined) representations of situation parameters is finite. Moreover, following symbolic representation approaches leads to ambiguity issues and does not entail semantic meaningfulness. Consequently, the challenge is to enable fuzzy matchmaking methodologies to match real-world situation characteristics to a finite set of predefined situation descriptions. In this paper, we propose conceptual situation spaces (CSS) which enable the description of situation characteristics as members in geometrical vector spaces following the idea of conceptual spaces. Consequently, fuzzy matchmaking is supported by calculating the semantic similarity between the current situation and prototypical situation descriptions in terms of their Euclidean distance within a CSS. Aligning CSS to existing symbolic representation standards, enables the automatic matchmaking between real-world situation characteristics and symbolic parameter representations.
