    Study of pulmonary function tests in response to localized cold stimuli in age group between 19-30 years of Guwahati city

    Background: The aim of the study was to observe any variation in the pulmonary functions in response to localized cold stimuli in an externally controlled environment.Methods: The baseline pulmonary function parameters were obtained before the introduction of localized cold stimuli. Now the stimuli were introduced by immersing both feet up to ankle in a bucket full of cold water maintained at temperature between 8-10degree Celsius in 30 male healthy subjects (age group 19-30 years) and the parameters were noted after 2 minutes and 5 minutes respectively using a Medspiror (HELIOS) Electronic spirometer and keeping room temperature at 24ocelsius in the Department of Physiology, Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati, Assam, India. For statistical analysis, the value of the pulmonary function parameters were presented as Mean±standard deviation. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 was employed for comparing the parameters and p<0.05 was considered as significant.Results: It was observed that the tidal volume and Inspiratory capacity showed a significant increase (p<0.05) whereas the Inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume and forced vital capacity showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in response to the cold stimuli.Conclusions: A significant effect was obtained in the pulmonary function tests exposed to cold stimuli showing the multidimensional response of the respiratory mechanics to cold, making a base for further information into the cold climatic effect in an individual

    PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY EDUCATIONAL PROCESS BASED ON ICTS

    A documentary review was carried out on the production and publication of research papers related to the study of the variables Psychological Foundations of the University Educational Process based on ICTs. The purpose of the bibliometric analysis proposed in this document was to know the main characteristics of the volume of publications registered in the Scopus database during the period 201 8-2022 at the Latin American level, achieving the identification of 30 publications in all . The information provided by this platform was organized through graphs and figures categorizing the information by the Year of Publication, Country of Origin, Area of Knowledge and Type of Publication. Once these characteristics have been described, the position of different authors on the proposed theme is referenced through a qualitative analysis. Among the main findings made through this research, it is found&nbsp; that Chile and Colombia, with 7 publications each, were the&nbsp; countries with &nbsp;the highest scientific production registered on behalf of authors affiliated with institutions in that country. The Area of Knowledge that made the greatest contribution to the construction of bibliographic material referring to the study of the &nbsp;Psychological Foundations of the University Educational Process based on ICTs was the social sciences &nbsp;with 22&nbsp; published documents, and the Type of Publication that was most used during the period indicated above was the Journal&nbsp; Article with&nbsp;&nbsp; 22 documents&nbsp; of total scientific production

    Foreword: Control and Conservation of Lampreys Beyond 2020 – Proceedings from the 3rd Sea Lamprey International Symposium (SLIS III)

    This special issue summarizes outcomes from the 3rd Sea Lamprey International Symposium (SLIS III; Fig. 1) held 28 July – 2 August 2019 at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. The first two symposia (SLIS I and SLIS II) were held 30 July – 8 August 1979 at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan and 14–18 August 2000 at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, respectively. The published volumes from these symposia in 1980 (Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Volume 37, Issue 11) and 2003 (Journal of Great Lakes Research Volume 29, Supplement 1) have been invaluable references for the broader scientific community and for management agencies around the Laurentian Great Lakes; cited over 4800 and 3300 times, respectively. SLIS III was attended by over 150 scientists, biologists, resource managers, graduate students, and Commission advisors, including participants from Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States (Fig. 2). Similar to SLIS I and SLIS II, the goals of SLIS III were to provide a forum to (i) update and publish information on sea lamprey control and research on lampreys since SLIS II, (ii) exchange knowledge and ideas to bring practitioners to a common plateau of understanding, and (iii) develop innovative initiatives and stimulate new vigor in efforts to control sea lamprey in the Great Lakes and to conserve lampreys in their native ranges. The emphasis on conservation of lampreys is unique to SLIS III and reflects a heightened international recognition that scientific and management advances supporting sea lamprey control in the Great Lakes can benefit the global effort to conserve native lampreys and vice versa

    Videojogos 2019: 11th International Conference on Videogames Sciences and Arts: book of abstracts

    Videojogos is an annual conference on videogame sciences and arts, promoted by the Portuguese Society of Video Games Sciences (SPCV). Since its first edition, in 2009, the conference has been promoting the scientific gathering of researchers and professionals in the expanded field of videogames. As in the first edition, Aveiro once again holds the conference. The 11th Conference on Videogame Sciences and Arts – Videojogos 2019 takes place in the University of Aveiro, Portugal, during November 27-29. The event is co-organized by the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro (DeCA), DeCA’s DigiMedia Research Center and the Portuguese Society of Video Games Sciences (SPCV). This year, 10 years after the first conference, SPCV and the co-organizers decided to convert the conference into a full international event, with English as a working language. As one of the outcomes of this decision, the proceedings of Videojogos 2019 will be published by Springer in their “Communications in Computer and Information Science” (CCIS) book series, part of a post-conference volume with the number 1164. This Book of Abstracts is more than a shortened version of the proceedings. Besides abstracts from the 20 selected papers that will be published in the book series, it contains abstracts from the research posters (8) and videogame demos (9) accepted for the conference, as well synopsis for other activities held at the conference such as keynotes (2) and workshops (3). Thanks to UA Editora, we were able to present this book in time for the conference, providing an overview into the diversity of contributions gathered in the videogame context. We would like to thank the scientific board for their contribution to guarantee and deliver the highest scientific quality, allowing the outstanding relevance of this selection. We also would like to thank the program chairs (demo, poster and workshops) and the organization team for all their concerns and efforts in the organization, an extremely important contribution for the overall success of the Videojogos 2019 Conference.     Is it necessary to stop HIV infected mothers breastfeeding? We need a clear-cut decision.

    I refer to the timely article by Doherty et al. published in the February issue of the Bulletin of World health Organization (1). It has been seen in Southern India that out of 134 HIV-infected mothers, 81% are a potential source of vertical transmission of HIV and this devastating impact on families is alarming (2). We have no further information on this group of HIV-positive mothers, in particular how many infected mothers are giving birth the HIV-positive babies, and also what is the possibility of HIV transmission by breastfeeding in this group. We need a decision regarding the safety of children breastfeeding from a HIV positive mothers. Should those mothers stop feeding their babies to prevent transmission of HIV? Recent studies revealed that HIV type 1 (HIV-1) in breast milk may not necessarily infect a child through breastfeeding. Again, from a review of several recent publications, it has been reported that there is a possible risk to transmit HIV-1 by breastfeeding, but that the risk is not highly significant. The risk is there, of course, but may be cured with timely anti retroviral therapy treatment of the HIV-positive pregnant mother. The fact is that breastfeeding saves many children, mainly in resource-poor countries where the majority of people cannot afford formula milk or a good substitute to mother’s milk. Eventually, breastfeeding not only protects babies by increasing their immunity to infection, breast milk also prevents under-nutrition and starvation. Breastfeeding is still recommended where infectious diseases are a common cause of childhood death, despite the additional risk of HIV transmission. Unfortunately, there is an ambiguous recommendation “In countries where safe alternatives to breast milk exist, HIV-1 positive mothers should not breast feed their infants. On the other hand, in countries where infectious diseases cause considerable infant death, HIV-1 positive mothers should consider breastfeeding.” (3).     The Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) is the follow-on ocean color instrument to the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS), which ceased operations in 1986, after an 8-year mission. SeaWiFS is expected to be launched in 1994, on the SeaStar satellite, being built by Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC). The SeaWiFS Project at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) has undertaken the responsibility of documenting all aspects of this mission, which is critical to the ocean color and marine science communities. This documentation, entitled the SeaWiFS Technical Report Series, is in the form of NASA Technical Memorandum Number 104566. All reports published are volumes within the series. This particular volume serves as a reference, or guidebook, to the previous 11 volumes and consists of 6 sections including: an errata, an addendum (a summary of the SeaWiFS Working Group Bio-optical Algorithm and Protocols Subgroups Workshops), an index to keywords and phrases, a list of all references cited, and lists of acronyms and symbols used. It is the editors' intention to publish a cumulative index of this type after every five volumes in the series. This will cover the topics published in all previous editions of the indices, that is, each new index will include all of the information contained in the preceding indices

    Transversal Competences in Engineering Degrees: Integrating Content and Foreign Language Teaching

    [EN] There has been a constant advance of the labour markets and permanent reorientation towards digital Industry 4.0. Yet, the environments for learning remain unchallenged when it comes to the provision of new professionals across the globe. Therefore, this has created a gap in transversal competences, which has compelled students of higher learning institutions to pursue them. The majority of higher learning institutions have emphasised transversal skills among learners and developed curriculums to accomplish these demands. The primary focus of the study was to attain integration and fusion of transversal skills into the development of specialised curriculum training for foreign language proficiency. The study applied mixed methodology techniques, which combined qualitative and quantitative methods in the study. To guarantee cohesion of the study, four research and monitoring techniques such as course dossiers, needs analysis, task-based activities and adapted competences scales were used.
