Editorial: Using neurophysiological signals that reflect cognitive or affective state

Get PDF
The central question of this Frontiers Research Topic is: What can we learn from brain and other physiological signals about an individual's cognitive and affective state and how can we use this information? This question reflects three important issues which are addressed by the 22 articles in this volume: (1) the combination of central and peripheral neurophysiological measures; (2) the diversity of cognitive and affective processes reflected by these measures; and (3) how to apply these measures in real world applications

The 6th East European Conference ADBIS 2002 was held on September~8--11, 2002 in Bratislava, Slovakia. It was organised by the Slovak University of Technology (and, in particular, its Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology) in Bratislava in co-operation with the ACM SIGMOD, the Moscow ACM SIGMOD Chapter, and Slovak Society for Computer Science. The call for papers attracted 115 submissions from 35~countries. The international program committee, consisting of 43 researchers from 21 countries, selected 25 full papers and 4 short papers for a monograph volume published by the Springer Verlag. Beside those 29 regular papers, the volume includes also 3 invited papers presented at the Conference as invited lectures. Additionally, 20 papers have been selected for the Research communications volume. The authors of accepted papers come from 22~countries of 4 continents, indicating the truly international recognition of the ADBIS conference series. The conference had 104 registered participants from 22~countries and included invited lectures, tutorials, and regular sessions. This report describes the goals of the conference and summarizes the issues discussed during the sessions

It is our pleasure to present this special issue of CIT. Journal of Computing and Information Technology. In this issue (Volume 22, Issue LISS 2013), we selected eight papers which have gone through several rounds of review and revision, and represent a cross-section of research in information technology areas that touch upon both technical and managerial issues. The preliminary versions of these papers were presented at the Third International Conference on Logistics, Informatics and Service Science (LISS 2013), which was jointly hosted by Beijing Jiaotong University, China and the University of Reading, August 23–26, 2013 at Reading, UK.</p

The Economic Impact of Security Breaches on Publicly Traded Corporations: An Empirical Investigation

In a 2008 survey of 522 computer security professionals, the Computer Security Institute found an average reported cost close to $500,000 for those companies that experienced a financial fraud. A survey of potential cloud computing adopters show that security and privacy are the primary concerns for not using the cloud. The present research conducts an event study to investigate the impact of publicly announced security breaches on the market value of the breached companies. We utilize the cumulative abnormal returns, risk shifts, and volume changes to measure this impact. Our results show that the cumulative abnormal return due to a security breach is -.19%. We also found the mean risk factor increases by about 22 percent. Our results also show an abnormal trading volume of about 6%. None of the previous research studies in the information systems area has investigated the impact of security breaches on cumulative abnormal returns, volume changes, and risk shifts

Research Paper Recommender System with Serendipity Using Tweets vs. Diversification

21st International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries, ICADL 2019, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, November 4–7, 2019. Part of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science book series (LNCS, volume 11853), also part of the Information Systems and Applications, incl. Internet/Web, and HCI book sub series (LNISA, volume 11853).So far, a lot of works have studied research paper recommender systems. However, most of them have focused only on the accuracy and ignored the serendipity, which is an important aspect for user satisfaction. The serendipity is concerned with the novelty of recommendations and to which extent recommendations positively surprise users. In this paper, we investigate a research paper recommender system focusing on serendipity. In particular, we examine (1) whether a user’s tweets lead to a generation of serendipitous recommendations and (2) whether the use of diversification on a recommendation list improves serendipity. We have conducted an online experiment with 22 subjects in the domain of computer science. The result of our experiment shows that tweets do not improve the serendipity, despite their heterogeneous nature. However, diversification delivers serendipitous research papers that cannot be generated by a traditional strategy

Differential hippocampal shapes in posterior cortical atrophy patients: A comparison with control and typical AD subjects.

Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by predominant visual deficits and parieto-occipital atrophy, and is typically associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. In AD, assessment of hippocampal atrophy is widely used in diagnosis, research, and clinical trials; its utility in PCA remains unclear. Given the posterior emphasis of PCA, we hypothesized that hippocampal shape measures may give additional group differentiation information compared with whole-hippocampal volume assessments. We investigated hippocampal volume and shape in subjects with PCA (n = 47), typical AD (n = 29), and controls (n = 48). Hippocampi were outlined on MRI scans and their 3D meshes were generated. We compared hippocampal volume and shape between disease groups. Mean adjusted hippocampal volumes were ∼8% smaller in PCA subjects (P < 0.001) and ∼22% smaller in tAD subject (P < 0.001) compared with controls. Significant inward deformations in the superior hippocampal tail were observed in PCA compared with controls even after adjustment for hippocampal volume. Inward deformations in large areas of the hippocampus were seen in tAD subjects compared with controls and PCA subjects, but only localized shape differences remained after adjusting for hippocampal volume. The shape differences observed, even allowing for volume differences, suggest that PCA and tAD are each associated with different patterns of hippocampal tissue loss that may contribute to the differential range and extent of episodic memory dysfunction in the two groups. A documentary review was carried out on the production and publication of research papers related to the study of the variables Psychological Foundations of the University Educational Process based on ICTs. The purpose of the bibliometric analysis proposed in this document was to know the main characteristics of the volume of publications registered in the Scopus database during the period 201 8-2022 at the Latin American level, achieving the identification of 30 publications in all . The information provided by this platform was organized through graphs and figures categorizing the information by the Year of Publication, Country of Origin, Area of Knowledge and Type of Publication. Once these characteristics have been described, the position of different authors on the proposed theme is referenced through a qualitative analysis. Among the main findings made through this research, it is found that Chile and Colombia, with 7 publications each, were the countries with the highest scientific production registered on behalf of authors affiliated with institutions in that country. The Area of Knowledge that made the greatest contribution to the construction of bibliographic material referring to the study of the Psychological Foundations of the University Educational Process based on ICTs was the social sciences with 22 published documents, and the Type of Publication that was most used during the period indicated above was the Journal Article with 22 documents of total scientific production
