When the first PISA-results were published in Germany in the end of 2001 (“PISA-Shock”), many discussions started about reforming teaching with the help of new ideas and innovative approaches. Around the same time, the number of competitions in German schools started to grow immensely. Although many schools have taken part in such competitions, we are lacking studies investigating their potential. Only as recent as 2006, a scientific meeting was held at the Körber-Forum in Hamburg called “Why competitions for pupils? Impulses for education and learning”, which initiated a wider and more systematic discussion about the meaning of competitions at school and in teaching. Two competitions in computer science – the Movingart-Competition for the lower secondary school ages and the Software Challenge for the senior years, both organized by the computer science department of Kiel University – are investigated in this dissertation as to whether and how far they represent useful tools in the development of teaching. The findings show that both competitions offer new and important impulses for teaching in its structure and its organization: pupils develop more competences, their motivation rises, and they get deeper insights into the subject; teachers start cooperations across different subjects and receive more options for adapting their teaching to invidual pupils. Thus, both competitions offer a great contribution to improve the quality of teaching and strongly offer the schools taking part an increased educational benefit. It is to be presumed that new future competitions for schools which are constructed in the same or a comparable way as Movingart and Software-Challenge will contribute in a similar improving way to the quality of teaching

(DIPF/Orig.)In current school pedagogical discussions about individual support for students on the one hand and about school and curriculum development on the other, growing importance is attributed to school competitions. A glance at the actual range of competitions, awards, seals of quality, and Co. reveals an astonishing diversity, which needs to be systemized and discussed deeper with regard to the expectable output on the levels of schools, teachers, and students. This article starts with a definition of competitions and suggests then a systematization of the current offerings. Subsequently, intended effects are analyzed and discussed. (DIPF/Orig.

Lack of continuous learning motivation is one of the major reasons for poor learning success at school. The concepts of competitive e-learning, particularly the contracting of school grades, are options to improve the learning success by increasing or holding up the continuous motivation. Present leaning management systems are not suitable for concepts of competitive e-learning. Therefore, the purpose of this master thesis is to create prototypes for these concepts. Together with fellow student Stefan Rameder, we have defined requirements and functional conception for these prototypes. Based on functional conception, technical conception are created and realised. The result of the implementation are two prototypes: competition module and contracting tool. To evaluate the prototypes, they are validated against the requirements defined above. The result of the validation is the level of conformance. In addition, some technical quality characteristics, such as interoperability, time behaviour, resource utilisation or accuracy are also evaluated. Some interfaces of the prototypes are documented in the form of screenshots. Also included in this master thesis are executable prototypes with limited functionality for demonstration purpose

An important educational goal is to foster interested and talented students in science in a lasting and purposeful way in order to satisfy the constantly growing need of qualified workforce in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Student competitions in science have proved to be a suitable measure, but there are few research findings in this field about requirements of competitions or participants. In this dissertation, a scheme to classify and analyse competition tasks was developed and validated in order to characterize the requirements of scientific science competitions. Based on this scheme, tasks of the International JuniorScienceOlympiad (IJSO) were analysed. Furthermore, the requirements of the competitions Jugend forscht/ Schüler experimentieren were identified. In a next step, these findings were used to develop and validate an instrument to test scientific knowledge and abilities. The test was then used in a study to characterize participants in scientific student competitions. In addition, predictors have been identified that influence participation and success in a scientific student competition. A combination of the test for scientific knowledge and abilities developed in this dissertation and further instruments for the assessment of affective characteristics makes a comprehensive characterization of talents in science possible. These findings can then be used in a next step to identify and, in combination with the identified requirements of the competitions, to foster interested students in science in a purposeful way. The findings on influencing factors of competition participation and of success in a competition can also be used to develop measures which motivate especially young students to participate in competitions or which reduce access barriers

In the last decade, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the field of education and science was seen as one of the most important steps towards the knowledge society. Many efforts and large amounts of subsidies flew into timely restricted projects for deploying e-learning in a large scale. However, in many cases the expected improvement of the learning processes was not achieved. Moreover, these preparatory projects were not transferred into commercial and sustainable solutions. Missing sustainability with respect to pedagogics, didactics, technology, and economics shows the need of novel research for economists, computer scientists, and pedagogues. This thesis addresses secondary e-learning services, which were examined in the context of both technological and economical sustainability. Therefore, this thesis provides a set of metrics for sustainability, which were used to verify the sustainability of these services: Two services are examined from an economical perspective, whereas one project was examined with respect to the cost-controlling of educational activities. The technological examination shows that new principles, technological procedures, and algorithms are necessary, in order to reach sustainability in several e-learning services. Therefore, this thesis introduces a novel Calculation Object Model for cost-controlling of educational activities and services. A service for lecture evaluations, an important element for determining sustainability, shows how to integrate ICT in university structures. Additionally, the Docoloc service provides novel results in the field of automated recognition of text plagiarisms. All services were implemented and evaluated with respect to their sustainability. This dissertation proves how far sustainability of e-learning is basically not limited to economic factors of a business case, and how far ICT has to be embedded into the overall process chain of education in an integrative way

Central aspects of modern warfare such as drone attacks, guided missiles, cyber attacks or the use of reconnaissance satellites would not be possible without contemporary mathematical and computer science research. This dissertation will revolve about the following questions: What impact does the connection between military application and civil research have on mathematics and computer science? What impact does the research have on society? And what ethical and societal questions arise from that
