Oii-web: An interactive online programming contest training system
In this paper we report our experience, related to the online training for the
Italian and International Olympiads in Informatics. We developed an interactive online
system, based on CMS, the grading system used in several major programming contests
including the International Olympiads in Informatics (IOI), and used it in three distinct
context: training students for the Italian Olympiads in Informatics (OII), training teachers
in order to be able to assist students for the OII, and training the Italian team for the
IOI. The system, that is freely available, proved to be a game changer for the whole italian
olympiads in informatics ecosystem: in one year, we almost doubled the participation to
OII, from 13k to 21k secondary school students.
The system is developed basing on the Contest Management System (CMS, http://cms-
dev.github.io/), so it is highly available to extensions supporting, for instance, the pro-
duction of feedback on problems solutions submitted by trainees. The system is also freely

Educational strategies in data journalism: A comparative study of six European countries
The article explores training programs in higher education with regard to data journalism from a multi-national perspective. By carrying out a comparative analysis in six European countries (Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom), it covers different models of media systems and journalistic cultures envisaged by Hallin and Mancini. Based on a desk review and in-depth interviews with instructors of data journalism in each country, the article identifies different approaches to the way data journalism is taught. In Europe, such programs are offered by four types of organizations: academic, vocational, professional, and civic. The role played by those organizations can be explained as a result of the peculiarities of national media systems. But there are also commonalities, for example, non-academic institutions (such as the European Journalism Center or the Center for Investigative Journalism) and major international news outlets (such as The Guardian and The New York Times) seem to take over a leading role in all of the analyzed countries. Generally speaking, data journalism education appears to be a very young discipline that frequently neglects fundamental journalistic topics such as ethical issues, transparency, accountability, and responsiveness although they are crucial in a journalistic field as sophisticated tools to reveal hidden aspects of reality
University choice, research quality and graduates' employability: Evidence from Italian national survey data
Universities have come under increasing pressure to become key drivers of economic development in the age of the knowledge economy. Yet we know very little about the impact of university quality and scientific excellence on the probability of graduates finding jobs. This paper investigates the determinants of Italian graduatesâ employability 3-years after graduation, with special reference to university quality measured in terms of research performance and teaching quality. The empirical evidence sheds light on the pivotal role of academic institutions in economic systems, proving that their contribution to employment growth could be substantial. Our analysis supports the promotion of policy initiatives to improve the quality of academic institutions, and the accountability of research results. As we also observe wide regional differences, we argue that university quality emerges as a supply tool for policy makers aiming at boosting young and skilled labour demand in less developed regions.
