A New Compact Delay, Doppler Stretch and Phase Estimation CRB with a Band-Limited Signal for Generic Remote Sensing Applications

    Get PDF
Since time-delay, Doppler effect and phase estimation are fundamental tasks in a plethora of engineering fields, tractable lower performance bounds for this problem are key tools of broad interest for a large variety of remote sensing applications. In the large sample regime and/or the high signal-to-noise ratio regime of the Gaussian conditional signal model, the Cramér–Rao bound (CRB) provides an accurate lower bound in the mean square error sense. In this contribution, we introduce firstly a new compact CRB expression for the joint time-delay and Doppler stretch estimation, considering a generic delayed and dilated band-limited signal. This generalizes known results for both wideband signals and the standard narrowband signal model where the Doppler effect on the band-limited baseband signal is not considered and amounts to a frequency shift. General compact closed-form CRB expressions for the amplitude and phase are also provided. These compact CRBs are expressed in terms of the baseband signal samples, making them especially easy to use whatever the baseband signal considered, therefore being valid for a variety of remote sensors. The new CRB expressions are validated in a positioning case study, both using synthetic and real data. These results show that the maximum likelihood estimator converges to the CRB at high signal-to-noise ratios, which confirms the exactness of the CRB. The CRB is further validated by comparing the ambiguity function and its 2nd order Taylor expansion where the perfect match also proves its exactness

In this paper Cramer-Rao lower bound of joint Doppler stretch and delay estimation for wideband signal is derived. We use wideband term to denote cases in which narrowband signal model is inappropriate. Two alternative estimation methods are considered: first method implies estimation of all unknown parameters, both desired and nuisance; second involves the averaging of likelihood function by nuisance parameter with considering its probability density. Estimation variances are equal for specified methods.

    Safe navigation for vehicles

ABSTRACT : Satellite navigation has acquired an increased importance during these last years, on the one hand due to the imminent appearance of the European GALILEO system that will complement the American GPS, and on the other hand due to the great success it has encountered in the commercial civil market. An important part of this success is based on the technological development at the receiver level that has rendered satellite navigation possible even in difficult environments. Today's objective is to prepare the utilisation of this kind of signals for land vehicle applications demanding high precision positioning. One of the main challenges within this research domain, which cannot be addressed by classical coupling techniques, is related to the system capability to provide reliable position estimations. The enhancement in dead-reckoning technologies (i.e. size reduction of MEMS-based sensors or gyroscopes) cannot all by itself reach the necessary confidence levels if exploited with classical localization and integration algorithms. Indeed, these techniques provide a position estimation whose reliability or confidence level it is very difficult to quantify. The feasibility of these applications relies not only on an extensive research to enhance the navigation algorithm performances in harsh scenarios, but also and in parallel, on the possibility to maintain, thanks to the presence of additional sensors, a high confidence level on the position estimation even in the absence of satellite navigation signals

OFDM passive radar employing compressive processing in MIMO configurations

A key advantage of passive radar is that it provides a means of performing position detection and tracking without the need for transmission of energy pulses. In this respect, passive radar systems utilising (receiving) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications signals from transmitters using OFDM standards such as long term evolution (LTE), WiMax or WiFi, are considered. Receiving a stronger reference signal for the matched filtering, detecting a lower target signature is one of the challenges in the passive radar. Impinging at the receiver, the OFDM waveforms supply two-dimensional virtual uniform rectangul ararray with the first and second dimensions refer to time delays and Doppler frequencies respectively. A subspace method, multiple signals classification (MUSIC) algorithm, demonstrated the signal extraction using multiple time samples. Apply normal measurements, this problem requires high computational resources regarding the number of OFDM subcarriers. For sub-Nyquist sampling, compressive sensing (CS) becomes attractive. A single snap shot measurement can be applied with Basis Pursuit (BP), whereas l1-singular value decomposition (l1-SVD) is applied for the multiple snapshots. Employing multiple transmitters, the diversity in the detection process can be achieved. While a passive means of attaining three-dimensional large-set measurements is provided by co-located receivers, there is a significant computational burden in terms of the on-line analysis of such data sets. In this thesis, the passive radar problem is presented as a mathematically sparse problem and interesting solutions, BP and l1-SVD as well as Bayesian compressive sensing, fast-Besselk, are considered. To increase the possibility of target signal detection, beamforming in the compressive domain is also introduced with the application of conve xoptimization and subspace orthogonality. An interference study is also another problem when reconstructing the target signal. The networks of passive radars are employed using stochastic geometry in order to understand the characteristics of interference, and the effect of signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). The results demonstrate the outstanding performance of l1-SVD over MUSIC when employing multiple snapshots. The single snapshot problem along with fast-BesselK multiple-input multiple-output configuration can be solved using fast-BesselK and this allows the compressive beamforming for detection capability
