    Automatic Analysis of Lens Distortions in Image Registration

    Geometric image registration by estimating homographies is an important processing step in a wide variety of computer vision applications. The 2D registration of two images does not require an explicit reconstruction of intrinsic or extrinsic camera parameters. However, correcting images for non-linear lens distortions is highly recommended. Unfortunately, standard calibration techniques are sometimes difficult to apply and reliable estimations of lens distortions can only rarely be obtained. In this paper we present a new technique for automatically detecting and categorising lens distortions in pairs of images by analysing registration results. The approach is based on a new metric for registration quality assessment and facilitates a PCA-based statistical model for classifying distortion effects. In doing so the overall importance for lens calibration and image corrections can be checked, and a measure for the efficiency of accordant correction steps is given

    Large Area 3D Reconstructions from Underwater Surveys

    Robotic underwater vehicles can perform vast optical surveys of the ocean floor. Scientists value these surveys since optical images offer high levels of information and are easily interpreted by humans. Unfortunately the coverage of a single image is limited hy absorption and backscatter while what is needed is an overall view of the survey area. Recent work on underwater mosaics assume planar scenes and are applicable only to Situations without much relief. We present a complete and validated system for processing optical images acquired from an underwater mbotic vehicle to form a 3D reconstruction of the wean floor. Our approach is designed for the most general conditions of wide-baseline imagery (low overlap and presence of significant 3D structure) and scales to hundreds of images. We only assume a calibrated camera system and a vehicle with uncertain and possibly drifting pose information (e.g. a compass, depth sensor and a Doppler velocity Our approach is based on a combination of techniques from computer vision, photogrammetry and mhotics. We use a local to global approach to structure from motion, aided by the navigation sensors on the vehicle to generate 3D suhmaps. These suhmaps are then placed in a common reference frame that is refined by matching overlapping submaps. The final stage of processing is a bundle adjustment that provides the 3D structure, camera poses and uncertainty estimates in a consistent reference frame.     Relating Multimodal Imagery Data in 3D

    This research develops and improves the fundamental mathematical approaches and techniques required to relate imagery and imagery derived multimodal products in 3D. Image registration, in a 2D sense, will always be limited by the 3D effects of viewing geometry on the target. Therefore, effects such as occlusion, parallax, shadowing, and terrain/building elevation can often be mitigated with even a modest amounts of 3D target modeling. Additionally, the imaged scene may appear radically different based on the sensed modality of interest; this is evident from the differences in visible, infrared, polarimetric, and radar imagery of the same site. This thesis develops a `model-centric\u27 approach to relating multimodal imagery in a 3D environment. By correctly modeling a site of interest, both geometrically and physically, it is possible to remove/mitigate some of the most difficult challenges associated with multimodal image registration. In order to accomplish this feat, the mathematical framework necessary to relate imagery to geometric models is thoroughly examined. Since geometric models may need to be generated to apply this `model-centric\u27 approach, this research develops methods to derive 3D models from imagery and LIDAR data. Of critical note, is the implementation of complimentary techniques for relating multimodal imagery that utilize the geometric model in concert with physics based modeling to simulate scene appearance under diverse imaging scenarios. Finally, the often neglected final phase of mapping localized image registration results back to the world coordinate system model for final data archival are addressed. In short, once a target site is properly modeled, both geometrically and physically, it is possible to orient the 3D model to the same viewing perspective as a captured image to enable proper registration. If done accurately, the synthetic model\u27s physical appearance can simulate the imaged modality of interest while simultaneously removing the 3-D ambiguity between the model and the captured image. Once registered, the captured image can then be archived as a texture map on the geometric site model. In this way, the 3D information that was lost when the image was acquired can be regained and properly related with other datasets for data fusion and analysis

    Map-Based Localization for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Navigation

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) require precise pose estimation when navigating in indoor and GNSS-denied / GNSS-degraded outdoor environments. The possibility of crashing in these environments is high, as spaces are confined, with many moving obstacles. There are many solutions for localization in GNSS-denied environments, and many different technologies are used. Common solutions involve setting up or using existing infrastructure, such as beacons, Wi-Fi, or surveyed targets. These solutions were avoided because the cost should be proportional to the number of users, not the coverage area. Heavy and expensive sensors, for example a high-end IMU, were also avoided. Given these requirements, a camera-based localization solution was selected for the sensor pose estimation. Several camera-based localization approaches were investigated. Map-based localization methods were shown to be the most efficient because they close loops using a pre-existing map, thus the amount of data and the amount of time spent collecting data are reduced as there is no need to re-observe the same areas multiple times. This dissertation proposes a solution to address the task of fully localizing a monocular camera onboard a UAV with respect to a known environment (i.e., it is assumed that a 3D model of the environment is available) for the purpose of navigation for UAVs in structured environments. Incremental map-based localization involves tracking a map through an image sequence. When the map is a 3D model, this task is referred to as model-based tracking. A by-product of the tracker is the relative 3D pose (position and orientation) between the camera and the object being tracked. State-of-the-art solutions advocate that tracking geometry is more robust than tracking image texture because edges are more invariant to changes in object appearance and lighting. However, model-based trackers have been limited to tracking small simple objects in small environments. An assessment was performed in tracking larger, more complex building models, in larger environments. A state-of-the art model-based tracker called ViSP (Visual Servoing Platform) was applied in tracking outdoor and indoor buildings using a UAVs low-cost camera. The assessment revealed weaknesses at large scales. Specifically, ViSP failed when tracking was lost, and needed to be manually re-initialized. Failure occurred when there was a lack of model features in the cameras field of view, and because of rapid camera motion. Experiments revealed that ViSP achieved positional accuracies similar to single point positioning solutions obtained from single-frequency (L1) GPS observations standard deviations around 10 metres. These errors were considered to be large, considering the geometric accuracy of the 3D model used in the experiments was 10 to 40 cm. The first contribution of this dissertation proposes to increase the performance of the localization system by combining ViSP with map-building incremental localization, also referred to as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Experimental results in both indoor and outdoor environments show sub-metre positional accuracies were achieved, while reducing the number of tracking losses throughout the image sequence. It is shown that by integrating model-based tracking with SLAM, not only does SLAM improve model tracking performance, but the model-based tracker alleviates the computational expense of SLAMs loop closing procedure to improve runtime performance. Experiments also revealed that ViSP was unable to handle occlusions when a complete 3D building model was used, resulting in large errors in its pose estimates. The second contribution of this dissertation is a novel map-based incremental localization algorithm that improves tracking performance, and increases pose estimation accuracies from ViSP. The novelty of this algorithm is the implementation of an efficient matching process that identifies corresponding linear features from the UAVs RGB image data and a large, complex, and untextured 3D model. The proposed model-based tracker improved positional accuracies from 10 m (obtained with ViSP) to 46 cm in outdoor environments, and improved from an unattainable result using VISP to 2 cm positional accuracies in large indoor environments. The main disadvantage of any incremental algorithm is that it requires the camera pose of the first frame. Initialization is often a manual process. The third contribution of this dissertation is a map-based absolute localization algorithm that automatically estimates the camera pose when no prior pose information is available. The method benefits from vertical line matching to accomplish a registration procedure of the reference model views with a set of initial input images via geometric hashing. Results demonstrate that sub-metre positional accuracies were achieved and a proposed enhancement of conventional geometric hashing produced more correct matches - 75% of the correct matches were identified, compared to 11%. Further the number of incorrect matches was reduced by 80%

    Appearance Modelling and Reconstruction for Navigation in Minimally Invasive Surgery

    Minimally invasive surgery is playing an increasingly important role for patient care. Whilst its direct patient benefit in terms of reduced trauma, improved recovery and shortened hospitalisation has been well established, there is a sustained need for improved training of the existing procedures and the development of new smart instruments to tackle the issue of visualisation, ergonomic control, haptic and tactile feedback. For endoscopic intervention, the small field of view in the presence of a complex anatomy can easily introduce disorientation to the operator as the tortuous access pathway is not always easy to predict and control with standard endoscopes. Effective training through simulation devices, based on either virtual reality or mixed-reality simulators, can help to improve the spatial awareness, consistency and safety of these procedures. This thesis examines the use of endoscopic videos for both simulation and navigation purposes. More specifically, it addresses the challenging problem of how to build high-fidelity subject-specific simulation environments for improved training and skills assessment. Issues related to mesh parameterisation and texture blending are investigated. With the maturity of computer vision in terms of both 3D shape reconstruction and localisation and mapping, vision-based techniques have enjoyed significant interest in recent years for surgical navigation. The thesis also tackles the problem of how to use vision-based techniques for providing a detailed 3D map and dynamically expanded field of view to improve spatial awareness and avoid operator disorientation. The key advantage of this approach is that it does not require additional hardware, and thus introduces minimal interference to the existing surgical workflow. The derived 3D map can be effectively integrated with pre-operative data, allowing both global and local 3D navigation by taking into account tissue structural and appearance changes. Both simulation and laboratory-based experiments are conducted throughout this research to assess the practical value of the method proposed

    A Unified Hybrid Formulation for Visual SLAM

    Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (Visual SLAM (VSLAM)), is the process of estimating the six degrees of freedom ego-motion of a camera, from its video feed, while simultaneously constructing a 3D model of the observed environment. Extensive research in the field for the past two decades has yielded real-time and efficient algorithms for VSLAM, allowing various interesting applications in augmented reality, cultural heritage, robotics and the automotive industry, to name a few. The underlying formula behind VSLAM is a mixture of image processing, geometry, graph theory, optimization and machine learning; the theoretical and practical development of these building blocks led to a wide variety of algorithms, each leveraging different assumptions to achieve superiority under the presumed conditions of operation. An exhaustive survey on the topic outlined seven main components in a generic VSLAM pipeline, namely: the matching paradigm, visual initialization, data association, pose estimation, topological/metric map generation, optimization, and global localization. Before claiming VSLAM a solved problem, numerous challenging subjects pertaining to robustness in each of the aforementioned components have to be addressed; namely: resilience to a wide variety of scenes (poorly textured or self repeating scenarios), resilience to dynamic changes (moving objects), and scalability for long-term operation (computational resources awareness and management). Furthermore, current state-of-the art VSLAM pipelines are tailored towards static, basic point cloud reconstructions, an impediment to perception applications such as path planning, obstacle avoidance and object tracking. To address these limitations, this work proposes a hybrid scene representation, where different sources of information extracted solely from the video feed are fused in a hybrid VSLAM system. The proposed pipeline allows for seamless integration of data from pixel-based intensity measurements and geometric entities to produce and make use of a coherent scene representation. The goal is threefold: 1) Increase camera tracking accuracy under challenging motions, 2) improve robustness to challenging poorly textured environments and varying illumination conditions, and 3) ensure scalability and long-term operation by efficiently maintaining a global reusable map representation

    Automated 3D model generation for urban environments [online]

    Abstract In this thesis, we present a fast approach to automated generation of textured 3D city models with both high details at ground level and complete coverage for birds-eye view. A ground-based facade model is acquired by driving a vehicle equipped with two 2D laser scanners and a digital camera under normal traffic conditions on public roads. One scanner is mounted horizontally and is used to determine the approximate component of relative motion along the movement of the acquisition vehicle via scan matching; the obtained relative motion estimates are concatenated to form an initial path. Assuming that features such as buildings are visible from both ground-based and airborne view, this initial path is globally corrected by Monte-Carlo Localization techniques using an aerial photograph or a Digital Surface Model as a global map. The second scanner is mounted vertically and is used to capture the 3D shape of the building facades. Applying a series of automated processing steps, a texture-mapped 3D facade model is reconstructed from the vertical laser scans and the camera images. In order to obtain an airborne model containing the roof and terrain shape complementary to the facade model, a Digital Surface Model is created from airborne laser scans, then triangulated, and finally texturemapped with aerial imagery. Finally, the facade model and the airborne model are fused to one single model usable for both walk- and fly-thrus. The developed algorithms are evaluated on a large data set acquired in downtown Berkeley, and the results are shown and discussed

    Distributed Robotic Vision for Calibration, Localisation, and Mapping

    This dissertation explores distributed algorithms for calibration, localisation, and mapping in the context of a multi-robot network equipped with cameras and onboard processing, comparing against centralised alternatives where all data is transmitted to a singular external node on which processing occurs. With the rise of large-scale camera networks, and as low-cost on-board processing becomes increasingly feasible in robotics networks, distributed algorithms are becoming important for robustness and scalability. Standard solutions to multi-camera computer vision require the data from all nodes to be processed at a central node which represents a significant single point of failure and incurs infeasible communication costs. Distributed solutions solve these issues by spreading the work over the entire network, operating only on local calculations and direct communication with nearby neighbours. This research considers a framework for a distributed robotic vision platform for calibration, localisation, mapping tasks where three main stages are identified: an initialisation stage where calibration and localisation are performed in a distributed manner, a local tracking stage where visual odometry is performed without inter-robot communication, and a global mapping stage where global alignment and optimisation strategies are applied. In consideration of this framework, this research investigates how algorithms can be developed to produce fundamentally distributed solutions, designed to minimise computational complexity whilst maintaining excellent performance, and designed to operate effectively in the long term.
