    Tracking interacting targets in multi-modal sensors

    PhDObject tracking is one of the fundamental tasks in various applications such as surveillance, sports, video conferencing and activity recognition. Factors such as occlusions, illumination changes and limited field of observance of the sensor make tracking a challenging task. To overcome these challenges the focus of this thesis is on using multiple modalities such as audio and video for multi-target, multi-modal tracking. Particularly, this thesis presents contributions to four related research topics, namely, pre-processing of input signals to reduce noise, multi-modal tracking, simultaneous detection and tracking, and interaction recognition. To improve the performance of detection algorithms, especially in the presence of noise, this thesis investigate filtering of the input data through spatio-temporal feature analysis as well as through frequency band analysis. The pre-processed data from multiple modalities is then fused within Particle filtering (PF). To further minimise the discrepancy between the real and the estimated positions, we propose a strategy that associates the hypotheses and the measurements with a real target, using a Weighted Probabilistic Data Association (WPDA). Since the filtering involved in the detection process reduces the available information and is inapplicable on low signal-to-noise ratio data, we investigate simultaneous detection and tracking approaches and propose a multi-target track-beforedetect Particle filtering (MT-TBD-PF). The proposed MT-TBD-PF algorithm bypasses the detection step and performs tracking in the raw signal. Finally, we apply the proposed multi-modal tracking to recognise interactions between targets in regions within, as well as outside the cameras’ fields of view. The efficiency of the proposed approaches are demonstrated on large uni-modal, multi-modal and multi-sensor scenarios from real world detections, tracking and event recognition datasets and through participation in evaluation campaigns

The volume of digital data is expected to be doubled within the next three years. At some point, it might not be financially feasible to store all the data that is received. Hence, if data is not analyzed as it is received, the information collected could be lost forever. Actionable Intelligence is the next level of Big Data analysis where data is being used for decision making. This thesis document describes my scientific contribution to Big Data Actionable Intelligence generations. Chapter 1 consists of my colleagues and I's contribution in Big Data Actionable Intelligence Architecture. The proven architecture has demonstrated to support real-time actionable intelligence generation using disparate data sources (e.g., social media, satellite, newsfeeds). This work has been published in the Journal of Big Data. Chapter 2 shows my original method to perform real-time detection of moving targets using Remote Sensing Big Data. This work has also been published in the Journal of Big Data and it has received an issuance of a U.S. patent. As the Field-of-View (FOV) in remote sensing continues to expand, the number of targets observed by each sensor continues to increase. The ability to track large quantities of targets in real-time poses a significant challenge. Chapter 3 describes my colleague and I's contribution to the multi-target tracking domain. We have demonstrated that we can overcome real-time tracking challenges when there are large number of targets. Our work was published in the Journal of Sensors

    The baseline avionics systems for the space tug is comprised of a central digital computer that integrates the functions of all of the tug's subsystems by means of a redundant digital data bus. The major subsystems of the avionics system are: data management; communications; guidance, navigation, and control; rendezvous and docking; electrical power; and instrumentation. The baseline avionics system for the space tug resulting from system and subsystem trade studies is defined. Tug interfaces with the spacecraft, orbiter and the ground, and the baseline philosophy and configuration for onboard checkout of the tug are included.     The NASA Propagation Experimenters Meeting (NAPEX), supported by the NASA Propagation Program, is convened annually to discuss studies made on radio wave propagation by investigators from domestic and international organizations. NAPEX XIV was held on May 11, 1990, at the Balcones Research Centers, University of Texas, Austin, Texas. The meeting was organized into two technical sessions: Satellite (ACTS) and the Olympus Spacecraft, while the second focused on the fixed and mobile satellite propagation studies and experiments. Following NAPEX XIV, the ACTS Miniworkshop was held at the Hotel Driskill, Austin, Texas, on May 12, 1990, to review ACTS propagation activities since the First ACTS Propagation Studies Workshop was held in Santa Monica, California, on November 28 and 29, 1989
