A Survey on Delay-Aware Resource Control for Wireless Systems --- Large Deviation Theory, Stochastic Lyapunov Drift and Distributed Stochastic Learning
In this tutorial paper, a comprehensive survey is given on several major
systematic approaches in dealing with delay-aware control problems, namely the
equivalent rate constraint approach, the Lyapunov stability drift approach and
the approximate Markov Decision Process (MDP) approach using stochastic
learning. These approaches essentially embrace most of the existing literature
regarding delay-aware resource control in wireless systems. They have their
relative pros and cons in terms of performance, complexity and implementation
issues. For each of the approaches, the problem setup, the general solution and
the design methodology are discussed. Applications of these approaches to
delay-aware resource allocation are illustrated with examples in single-hop
wireless networks. Furthermore, recent results regarding delay-aware multi-hop
routing designs in general multi-hop networks are elaborated. Finally, the
delay performance of the various approaches are compared through simulations
using an example of the uplink OFDMA systems.Comment: 58 pages, 8 figures; IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 201
Pilot interaction with automated airborne decision making systems
An investigation was made of interaction between a human pilot and automated on-board decision making systems. Research was initiated on the topic of pilot problem solving in automated and semi-automated flight management systems and attempts were made to develop a model of human decision making in a multi-task situation. A study was made of allocation of responsibility between human and computer, and discussed were various pilot performance parameters with varying degrees of automation. Optimal allocation of responsibility between human and computer was considered and some theoretical results found in the literature were presented. The pilot as a problem solver was discussed. Finally the design of displays, controls, procedures, and computer aids for problem solving tasks in automated and semi-automated systems was considered

Survey of traffic control schemes and error control schemes for ATM networks
Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. This paper surveys and reviews a number of topics related to ATM networks. Those topics cover congestion control, provision of multiple classes of traffic, and error control. Due to the nature of ATM networks, those issues are far more challenging than in conventional networks. Sorne of the more promising solutions to those issues are surveyed, and the corresponding results on performance are summarized. Future research problems in ATM protocol aspect are also presented
On the Stability of Random Multiple Access with Stochastic Energy Harvesting
In this paper, we consider the random access of nodes having energy
harvesting capability and a battery to store the harvested energy. Each node
attempts to transmit the head-of-line packet in the queue if its battery is
nonempty. The packet and energy arrivals into the queue and the battery are all
modeled as a discrete-time stochastic process. The main contribution of this
paper is the exact characterization of the stability region of the packet
queues given the energy harvesting rates when a pair of nodes are randomly
accessing a common channel having multipacket reception (MPR) capability. The
channel with MPR capability is a generalized form of the wireless channel
modeling which allows probabilistic receptions of the simultaneously
transmitted packets. The results obtained in this paper are fairly general as
the cases with unlimited energy for transmissions both with the collision
channel and the channel with MPR capability can be derived from ours as special
cases. Furthermore, we study the impact of the finiteness of the batteries on
the achievable stability region.Comment: The material in this paper was presented in part at the IEEE

Random Access in DVB-RCS2: Design and Dynamic Control for Congestion Avoidance
In the current DVB generation, satellite terminals are expected to be
interactive and capable of transmission in the return channel with satisfying
quality. Considering the bursty nature of their traffic and the long
propagation delay, the use of a random access technique is a viable solution
for such a Medium Access Control (MAC) scenario. In this paper, random access
communication design in DVB-RCS2 is considered with particular regard to the
recently introduced Contention Resolution Diversity Slotted Aloha (CRDSA)
technique. This paper presents a model for design and tackles some issues on
performance evaluation of the system by giving intuitive and effective tools.
Moreover, dynamic control procedures that are able to avoid congestion at the
gateway are introduced. Results show the advantages brought by CRDSA to
DVB-RCS2 with regard to the previous state of the art.Comment: Accepted for publication: IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting; IEEE
