Language in Our Time: An Empirical Analysis of Hashtags
Hashtags in online social networks have gained tremendous popularity during
the past five years. The resulting large quantity of data has provided a new
lens into modern society. Previously, researchers mainly rely on data collected
from Twitter to study either a certain type of hashtags or a certain property
of hashtags. In this paper, we perform the first large-scale empirical analysis
of hashtags shared on Instagram, the major platform for hashtag-sharing. We
study hashtags from three different dimensions including the temporal-spatial
dimension, the semantic dimension, and the social dimension. Extensive
experiments performed on three large-scale datasets with more than 7 million
hashtags in total provide a series of interesting observations. First, we show
that the temporal patterns of hashtags can be categorized into four different
clusters, and people tend to share fewer hashtags at certain places and more
hashtags at others. Second, we observe that a non-negligible proportion of
hashtags exhibit large semantic displacement. We demonstrate hashtags that are
more uniformly shared among users, as quantified by the proposed hashtag
entropy, are less prone to semantic displacement. In the end, we propose a
bipartite graph embedding model to summarize users' hashtag profiles, and rely
on these profiles to perform friendship prediction. Evaluation results show
that our approach achieves an effective prediction with AUC (area under the ROC
curve) above 0.8 which demonstrates the strong social signals possessed in

Ontology for Representing Human Needs
Need satisfaction plays a fundamental role in human well-being. Hence understanding citizens' needs is crucial for developing a successful social and economic policy. This notwithstanding, the concept of need has not yet found its place in information systems and online tools. Furthermore, assessing needs itself remains a labor-intensive, mostly offline activity, where only a limited support by computational tools is available. In this paper, we make the first step towards employing need management in the design of information systems supporting participation and participatory innovation by proposing OpeNeeD, a family of ontologies for representing human needs data. As a proof of concept, OpeNeeD has been used to represent, enrich and query the results of a needs assessment study in a local citizen community in one of the Vienna districts. The proposed ontology will facilitate such studies and enable the representation of citizens' needs as Linked Data, fostering its co-creation and incentivizing the use of Open Data and services based on it
Transforming Graph Representations for Statistical Relational Learning
Relational data representations have become an increasingly important topic
due to the recent proliferation of network datasets (e.g., social, biological,
information networks) and a corresponding increase in the application of
statistical relational learning (SRL) algorithms to these domains. In this
article, we examine a range of representation issues for graph-based relational
data. Since the choice of relational data representation for the nodes, links,
and features can dramatically affect the capabilities of SRL algorithms, we
survey approaches and opportunities for relational representation
transformation designed to improve the performance of these algorithms. This
leads us to introduce an intuitive taxonomy for data representation
transformations in relational domains that incorporates link transformation and
node transformation as symmetric representation tasks. In particular, the
transformation tasks for both nodes and links include (i) predicting their
existence, (ii) predicting their label or type, (iii) estimating their weight
or importance, and (iv) systematically constructing their relevant features. We
motivate our taxonomy through detailed examples and use it to survey and
compare competing approaches for each of these tasks. We also discuss general
conditions for transforming links, nodes, and features. Finally, we highlight
challenges that remain to be addressed
Contextual Social Networking
The thesis centers around the multi-faceted research question of how contexts may
be detected and derived that can be used for new context aware Social Networking
services and for improving the usefulness of existing Social Networking services, giving
rise to the notion of Contextual Social Networking. In a first foundational part,
we characterize the closely related fields of Contextual-, Mobile-, and Decentralized
Social Networking using different methods and focusing on different detailed
aspects. A second part focuses on the question of how short-term and long-term
social contexts as especially interesting forms of context for Social Networking may
be derived. We focus on NLP based methods for the characterization of social relations
as a typical form of long-term social contexts and on Mobile Social Signal
Processing methods for deriving short-term social contexts on the basis of geometry
of interaction and audio. We furthermore investigate, how personal social agents
may combine such social context elements on various levels of abstraction. The third
part discusses new and improved context aware Social Networking service concepts.
We investigate special forms of awareness services, new forms of social information
retrieval, social recommender systems, context aware privacy concepts and services
and platforms supporting Open Innovation and creative processes.

In einem grundlegenden ersten Teil werden die eng zusammenhängenden Gebiete Contextual Social Networking, Mobile Social Networking und Decentralized Social Networking mit verschiedenen Methoden und unter Fokussierung auf verschiedene Detail-Aspekte näher beleuchtet und in Zusammenhang gesetzt. Ein zweiter Teil behandelt die Frage, wie soziale Kurzzeit- und Langzeit-Kontexte als für das Social Networking besonders interessante Formen von Kontext gemessen und abgeleitet werden können. Ein Fokus liegt hierbei auf NLP Methoden zur Charakterisierung sozialer Beziehungen als einer typischen Form von sozialem Langzeit-Kontext. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf Methoden aus dem Mobile Social Signal Processing zur Ableitung sinnvoller sozialer Kurzzeit-Kontexte auf der Basis von Interaktionsgeometrien und Audio-Daten. Es wird ferner untersucht, wie persönliche soziale Agenten Kontext-Elemente verschiedener Abstraktionsgrade miteinander kombinieren können. Der dritte Teil behandelt neuartige und verbesserte Konzepte für kontextbewusste Social Networking Dienste. A planetary nervous system for social mining and collective awareness
We present a research roadmap of a Planetary Nervous System (PNS), capable of sensing and mining the digital breadcrumbs of human activities and unveiling the knowledge hidden in the big data for addressing the big questions about social complexity. We envision the PNS as a globally distributed, self-organizing, techno-social system for answering analytical questions about the status of world-wide society, based on three pillars: social sensing, social mining and the idea of trust networks and privacy-aware social mining. We discuss the ingredients of a science and a technology necessary to build the PNS upon the three mentioned pillars, beyond the limitations of their respective state-of-art. Social sensing is aimed at developing better methods for harvesting the big data from the techno-social ecosystem and make them available for mining, learning and analysis at a properly high abstraction level. Social mining is the problem of discovering patterns and models of human behaviour from the sensed data across the various social dimensions by data mining, machine learning and social network analysis. Trusted networks and privacy-aware social mining is aimed at creating a new deal around the questions of privacy and data ownership empowering individual persons with full awareness and control on own personal data, so that users may allow access and use of their data for their own good and the common good. The PNS will provide a goal-oriented knowledge discovery framework, made of technology and people, able to configure itself to the aim of answering questions about the pulse of global society. Given an analytical request, the PNS activates a process composed by a variety of interconnected tasks exploiting the social sensing and mining methods within the transparent ecosystem provided by the trusted network. The PNS we foresee is the key tool for individual and collective awareness for the knowledge society. We need such a tool for everyone to become fully aware of how powerful is the knowledge of our society we can achieve by leveraging our wisdom as a crowd, and how important is that everybody participates both as a consumer and as a producer of the social knowledge, for it to become a trustable, accessible, safe and useful public good.Seventh Framework Programme (European Commission) (grant agreement No. 284709
