A model for providing emotion awareness and feedback using fuzzy logic in online learning
Monitoring usersâ emotive states and using that information for providing feedback and scaffolding is crucial. In the learning context, emotions can be used to increase studentsâ attention as well as to improve memory and reasoning. In this context, tutors should be prepared to create affective learning situations and encourage collaborative knowledge construction as well as identify those studentsâ feelings which hinder learning process. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to label affective behavior in educational discourse based on fuzzy logic, which enables a human or virtual tutor to capture studentsâ emotions, make students aware of their own emotions, assess these emotions and provide appropriate affective feedback. To that end, we propose a fuzzy classifier that provides a priori qualitative assessment and fuzzy qualifiers bound to the amounts such as few, regular and many assigned by an affective dictionary to every word. The advantage of the statistical approach is to reduce the classical pollution problem of training and analyzing the scenario using the same dataset. Inferentialism
This article offers an overview of inferential role semantics. We aim
to provide a map of the terrain as well as challenging some of the inferentialistâs
standard commitments. We begin by introducing inferentialism and
placing it into the wider context of contemporary philosophy of language. §2
focuses on what is standardly considered both the most important test case
for and the most natural application of inferential role semantics: the case
of the logical constants. We discuss some of the (alleged) benefits of logical
inferentialism, chiefly with regards to the epistemology of logic, and consider
a number of objections. §3 introduces and critically examines the most influential
and most fully developed form of global inferentialism: Robert Brandomâs
inferentialism about linguistic and conceptual content in general. Finally, in
§4 we consider a number of general objections to IRS and consider possible
responses on the inferentialistâs behalf
Neogeography: The Challenge of Channelling Large and Ill-Behaved Data Streams
Neogeography is the combination of user generated data and experiences with mapping technologies. In this article we present a research project to extract valuable structured information with a geographic component from unstructured user generated text in wikis, forums, or SMSes. The extracted information should be integrated together to form a collective knowledge about certain domain. This structured information can be used further to help users from the same domain who want to get information using simple question answering system. The project intends to help workers communities in developing countries to share their knowledge, providing a simple and cheap way to contribute and get benefit using the available communication technology
Sellars on Functionalism and Normativity
The term âfunctionalismâ is usually heard in connection with the philosophy of mind or cognition. The functionalism of Wilfrid Sellars, however, is in the first instance as response to the worries about the metaphysics not of mental states, but of meaning. Only late in his career did Sellars explore the possibility of extending his functionalism into an account of cognition. It has been suggested, though, that Sellarsâ extension of his functionalist theory into subpersonal territory is not successful. In particular, there is a worry abroad that in order to be a functionalist about cognitive states, Sellars must succumb to a special form of the Myth of the Given. In this essay I will review and elucidate what I take to be the structure of Sellarsâ functionalism, defending it from this worry. I will suggest a resolution of some apparent textual contradictions based in part on the chronology of Sellarsâ writing, with the assumption that later writings express Sellarsâ more nuanced views.

Topic Independent Identification of Agreement and Disagreement in Social Media Dialogue
Research on the structure of dialogue has been hampered for years because
large dialogue corpora have not been available. This has impacted the dialogue
research community's ability to develop better theories, as well as good off
the shelf tools for dialogue processing. Happily, an increasing amount of
information and opinion exchange occur in natural dialogue in online forums,
where people share their opinions about a vast range of topics. In particular
we are interested in rejection in dialogue, also called disagreement and
denial, where the size of available dialogue corpora, for the first time,
offers an opportunity to empirically test theoretical accounts of the
expression and inference of rejection in dialogue. In this paper, we test
whether topic-independent features motivated by theoretical predictions can be
used to recognize rejection in online forums in a topic independent way. Our
results show that our theoretically motivated features achieve 66% accuracy, an

Modelling Users, Intentions, and Structure in Spoken Dialog
We outline how utterances in dialogs can be interpreted using a partial first
order logic. We exploit the capability of this logic to talk about the truth
status of formulae to define a notion of coherence between utterances and
explain how this coherence relation can serve for the construction of AND/OR
trees that represent the segmentation of the dialog. In a BDI model we
formalize basic assumptions about dialog and cooperative behaviour of
participants. These assumptions provide a basis for inferring speech acts from
coherence relations between utterances and attitudes of dialog participants.
Speech acts prove to be useful for determining dialog segments defined on the
notion of completing expectations of dialog participants. Finally, we sketch
how explicit segmentation signalled by cue phrases and performatives is covered

The REVERE project:Experiments with the application of probabilistic NLP to systems engineering
Despite natural languageâs well-documented shortcomings as a medium for precise technical description, its use in software-intensive systems engineering remains inescapable. This poses many problems for engineers who must derive problem understanding and synthesise precise solution descriptions from free text. This is true both for the largely unstructured textual descriptions from which system requirements are derived, and for more formal documents, such as standards, which impose requirements on system development processes. An Account of Opinion Implicatures
While previous sentiment analysis research has concentrated on the
interpretation of explicitly stated opinions and attitudes, this work initiates
the computational study of a type of opinion implicature (i.e.,
opinion-oriented inference) in text. This paper described a rule-based
framework for representing and analyzing opinion implicatures which we hope
will contribute to deeper automatic interpretation of subjective language. In
the course of understanding implicatures, the system recognizes implicit
sentiments (and beliefs) toward various events and entities in the sentence,
often attributed to different sources (holders) and of mixed polarities; thus,
