    The belief noisy-or model applied to network reliability analysis

    One difficulty faced in knowledge engineering for Bayesian Network (BN) is the quan-tification step where the Conditional Probability Tables (CPTs) are determined. The number of parameters included in CPTs increases exponentially with the number of parent variables. The most common solution is the application of the so-called canonical gates. The Noisy-OR (NOR) gate, which takes advantage of the independence of causal interactions, provides a logarithmic reduction of the number of parameters required to specify a CPT. In this paper, an extension of NOR model based on the theory of belief functions, named Belief Noisy-OR (BNOR), is proposed. BNOR is capable of dealing with both aleatory and epistemic uncertainty of the network. Compared with NOR, more rich information which is of great value for making decisions can be got when the available knowledge is uncertain. Specially, when there is no epistemic uncertainty, BNOR degrades into NOR. Additionally, different structures of BNOR are presented in this paper in order to meet various needs of engineers.     International audienceDiagnostics and prognostics of health states are important activities in the maintenance process strategy of dynamical systems. Many approaches have been developed for this purpose and we particularly focus on data-driven methods which are increasingly applied due to the availability of various cheap sensors. Most data-driven methods proposed in the literature rely on probability density estimation. However, when the training data are limited, the estimated parameters are no longer reliable. This is particularly true for data in faulty states which are generally expensive and difficult to obtain. In order to solve this problem, we propose to use the theory of belief functions as described by Dempster, Shafer (Theory of Evidence) and Smets (Transferable Belief Model). A few methods based on belief functions have been proposed for diagnostics and prognostics of dynamical systems. Among these methods, Evidential Hidden Markov Models (EvHMM) seems promising and extends usual HMM to belief functions. Inference tools in EvHMM have already been developed, but parameter training has not fully been considered until now or only with strong assumptions. In this paper, we propose to complete the generalization of HMM to belief functions with a method for automatic parameter training. The generalization of this training procedure to more general Time-Sliced Temporal Evidential Network (TSTEN) is discussed paving the way for a further generalization of Dynamic Bayesian Network to belief functions with potential applications to diagnostics and prognostics. An application to time series classification is proposed

    Decision-support methodology to assess risk in end-of-life management of complex systems

    End-of-life management of complex systems is increasingly important for industry because of growing environmental concerns and associated regulations. In many areas, lack of hindsight and significant statistical information restricts the efficiency of end-of-life management processes and additional expert knowledge is required. In this context and to promote the reuse of secondhand components, a methodology supported by risk assessment tools is proposed. The proposal consists of an approach to combine expert and statistical knowledge to improve risk assessment. The theory of belief functions provides a common framework to facilitate fusion of multisource knowledge, and a directed evidential network is used to compute a measure of the risk level. An additional indicator is proposed to determine the result quality. Finally, the approach is applied to a scenario in aircraft deconstruction. In order to support the scientific contribution, a software prototype has been developed and used to illustrate the processing of directed evidential networks

    International audienceCondition-based maintenance is nowadays considered as a key-process in maintenance strategies and prognostics appears to be a very promising activity as it should permit to not engage inopportune spending. Various approaches have been developed and data-driven methods are increasingly applied. The training step of these methods generally requires huge datasets since a lot of methods rely on probability theory and/or on artificial neural networks. This step is thus time-consuming and generally made in batch mode which can be restrictive in practical application when few data are available. A method for prognostics is proposed to face up this problem of lack of information and missing prior knowledge. The approach is based on the integration of three complementary modules and aims at predicting the failure mode early while the system can switch between several functioning modes. The three modules are: 1) observation selection based on information theory and Choquet Integral, 2) prediction relying on an evolving real-time neuro-fuzzy system and 3) classification into one of the possible functioning modes using an evidential Markovian classifier based on Dempster-Shafer theory. Experiments concern the prediction of an engine health based on more than twenty observations

    Reasoning in evidential networks with conditional belief functions

    AbstractIn the existing evidential networks applicable to belief functions, the relations among the variables are always represented by joint belief functions on the product space of the variables involved. In this paper, we use conditional belief functions to represent such relations in the network and show some relations between these two kinds of representations. We also present a propagation algorithm for such networks. By analyzing the properties of some special networks with conditional belief functions, called networks with partial dependency, we show that the computation for reasoning can be simplified

    Recognition Situations Using Extended Dempster-Shafer Theory

    Weiser’s [111] vision of pervasive computing describes a world where technology seamlessly integrates into the environment, automatically responding to peoples’ needs. Underpinning this vision is the ability of systems to automatically track the situation of a person. The task of situation recognition is critical and complex: noisy and unreliable sensor data, dynamic situations, unpredictable human behaviour and changes in the environment all contribute to the complexity. No single recognition technique is suitable in all environments. Factors such as availability of training data, ability to deal with uncertain information and transparency to the user will determine which technique to use in any particular environment. In this thesis, we propose the use of Dempster-Shafer theory as a theoretically sound basis for situation recognition - an approach that can reason with uncertainty, but which does not rely on training data. We use existing operations from Dempster-Shafer theory and create new operations to establish an evidence decision network. The network is used to generate and assess situation beliefs based on processed sensor data for an environment. We also define two specific extensions to Dempster-Shafer theory to enhance the knowledge that can be used for reasoning: 1) temporal knowledge about situation time patterns 2) quality of evidence sources (sensors) into the reasoning process. To validate the feasibility of our approach, this thesis creates evidence decision networks for two real-world data sets: a smart home data set and an officebased data set. We analyse situation recognition accuracy for each of the data sets, using the evidence decision networks with temporal/quality extensions. We also compare the evidence decision networks against two learning techniques: Naïve Bayes and J48 Decision Tree
