User's Privacy in Recommendation Systems Applying Online Social Network Data, A Survey and Taxonomy
Recommender systems have become an integral part of many social networks and
extract knowledge from a user's personal and sensitive data both explicitly,
with the user's knowledge, and implicitly. This trend has created major privacy
concerns as users are mostly unaware of what data and how much data is being
used and how securely it is used. In this context, several works have been done
to address privacy concerns for usage in online social network data and by
recommender systems. This paper surveys the main privacy concerns, measurements
and privacy-preserving techniques used in large-scale online social networks
and recommender systems. It is based on historical works on security,
privacy-preserving, statistical modeling, and datasets to provide an overview
of the technical difficulties and problems associated with privacy preserving

Why the Economics Profession Must Actively Participate in the Privacy Protection Debate
When Google or the U.S. Census Bureau publish detailed statistics on browsing habits or neighborhood characteristics, some privacy is lost for everybody while supplying public information. To date, economists have not focused on the privacy loss inherent in data publication. In their stead, these issues have been advanced almost exclusively by computer scientists who are primarily interested in technical problems associated with protecting privacy. Economists should join the discussion, first, to determine where to balance privacy protection against data quality; a social choice problem. Interpretable Machine Learning for Privacy-Preserving Pervasive Systems
Our everyday interactions with pervasive systems generate traces that capture
various aspects of human behavior and enable machine learning algorithms to
extract latent information about users. In this paper, we propose a machine
learning interpretability framework that enables users to understand how these
generated traces violate their privacy
Generating Artificial Data for Private Deep Learning
In this paper, we propose generating artificial data that retain statistical
properties of real data as the means of providing privacy with respect to the
original dataset. We use generative adversarial network to draw
privacy-preserving artificial data samples and derive an empirical method to
assess the risk of information disclosure in a differential-privacy-like way.
Our experiments show that we are able to generate artificial data of high
quality and successfully train and validate machine learning models on this
