    Biomimetic Micro Air Vehicle Testing Development and Small Scale Flapping-Wing Analysis

    The purpose of this research was to develop testing methods capable of analyzing the performance of a miniature flapping-wing mechanism that can later be adapted to a biomimetic micro air vehicle (MAV). Three small scale flapping mechanisms capable of single plane flapping, flapping with active pitch control, and flapping/pitch with out-of-plane movement were designed using SolidWorks. The flapping-only model was fabricated on an Objet Eden 500V 3-dimensional printer. The flapping mechanism was mounted on an aluminum plate supported by air bearings, and thrust was measured for a variety of conditions. The testing was conducted using wings composed of carbon fiber and Mylar in four different size configurations, with flapping speeds ranging from 3.5 – 15 Hertz. The thrust was measured using an axially mounted 50 gram load cell which resulted in an accuracy of ± 0.1 gram. Non-dimensional thrust and power numbers were computed. The flapping mechanism was then mounted on a 6-component force balance to measure dynamic loading, which demonstrated the ability to gather time-accurate data within a single flapping stroke at speeds as high as 15 Hz. High speed cameras operated at 1500 Hz were also used for capturing images of the structure of the wing for various testing conditions. Overall this research successfully demonstrated both qualitative and quantitative testing procedures that can be utilized in developing small scale flapping-wing micro air vehicles

    The purpose of this catalog is to assist small business firms in making the community aware of products emerging from their efforts in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. It contains descriptions of some products that have advanced into Phase 3 and others that are identified as prospective products. Both lists of products in this catalog are based on information supplied by NASA SBIR contractors in responding to an invitation to be represented in this document. Generally, all products suggested by the small firms were included in order to meet the goals of information exchange for SBIR results. Of the 444 SBIR contractors NASA queried, 137 provided information on 219 products. The catalog presents the product information in the technology areas listed in the table of contents. Within each area, the products are listed in alphabetical order by product name and are given identifying numbers. Also included is an alphabetical listing of the companies that have products described. This listing cross-references the product list and provides information on the business activity of each firm. In addition, there are three indexes: one a list of firms by states, one that lists the products according to NASA Centers that managed the SBIR projects, and one that lists the products by the relevant Technical Topics utilized in NASA's annual program solicitation under which each SBIR project was selected

    Experimental Characterization of the Structural Dynamics and Aero-Structural Sensitivity of a Hawkmoth Wing Toward the Development of Design Rules for Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles

    A case is made for why the structures discipline must take on a more central role in the research and design of flapping-wing micro-air-vehicles, especially if research trends continue toward bio-inspired, insect-sized flexible wing designs. In making the case, the eigenstructure of the wing emerges as a key structural metric for consideration. But with virtually no structural dynamic data available for actual insect wings, both engineered and computational wing models that have been inspired by biological analogs have no structural truth models to which they can be anchored. An experimental framework is therefore developed herein for performing system identification testing on the wings of insects. This framework is then utilized to characterize the structural dynamics of the forewing of a large sample of hawkmoth (Manduca Sexta) for future design and research consideration. The research also weighs-in on a decade-long debate as to the relative contributions that the inertial and fluid dynamic forces acting on a flapping insect wing have on its deformation (expression) during flight. Ultimately the findings proves that both affect wing expression significantly, casting serious doubt on the longstanding and most frequently cited research that indicates fluid dynamic forces have minimal or negligible effect

    Electronic Image Stabilization for Mobile Robotic Vision Systems

    When a camera is affixed on a dynamic mobile robot, image stabilization is the first step towards more complex analysis on the video feed. This thesis presents a novel electronic image stabilization (EIS) algorithm for small inexpensive highly dynamic mobile robotic platforms with onboard camera systems. The algorithm combines optical flow motion parameter estimation with angular rate data provided by a strapdown inertial measurement unit (IMU). A discrete Kalman filter in feedforward configuration is used for optimal fusion of the two data sources. Performance evaluations are conducted by a simulated video truth model (capturing the effects of image translation, rotation, blurring, and moving objects), and live test data. Live data was collected from a camera and IMU affixed to the DAGSI Whegsâ„¢ mobile robotic platform as it navigated through a hallway. Template matching, feature detection, optical flow, and inertial measurement techniques are compared and analyzed to determine the most suitable algorithm for this specific type of image stabilization. Pyramidal Lucas-Kanade optical flow using Shi-Tomasi good features in combination with inertial measurement is the EIS algorithm found to be superior. In the presence of moving objects, fusion of inertial measurement reduces optical flow root-mean-squared (RMS) error in motion parameter estimates by 40%. No previous image stabilization algorithm to date directly fuses optical flow estimation with inertial measurement by way of Kalman filtering

    Safety mechanisms for the reliable operation of 3D vehicles

    The safety and reliability of unmanned vehicles is a growing concern in our modern society. This work proposes and implements mechanisms to minimize risks in the operation of 3D vehicles. A brief analysis is performed to identify high priority risks and low complexity solutions are proposed in order to avoid or minimize their impact. To cope with critical power failures, an autonomous current monitoring system was studied and implemented after analyzing two different techniques: resistive and magnetic current sensing. Furthermore, a fall detection system capable of detecting rotational and free falls was developed and evaluated. Lastly, an obstacle detection and avoidance system relying on multiple smart sensors was proposed. Several simulation tests were performed for different velocities to obtain processing delays and stopping times and thus, the minimal safe flying distance for the avoidance of obstacles.A segurança na operação fiável de veículos não tripulados é uma preocupação crescente na nossa sociedade moderna. Este trabalho propõe e implementa mecanismos para minimizar os riscos no manuseamento destes veículos. Uma breve análise é realizada para identificar os componentes com maior risco de ocorrerem problemas e soluções de baixa complexidade são propostas a fim de evitar ou minimizar o seu impacto. Para lidar com falhas de energia críticas, um sistema de monitorização de corrente foi estudado e implementado após analisar duas técnicas diferentes: detecção de corrente resistiva e magnética. Além disso, foi desenvolvido e avaliado um sistema de detecção de quedas rotacionais e livres. Por último, foi proposto um sistema de detecção e anti-colisão de obstáculos baseado em múltiplos sensores inteligentes. Diversos testes de simulação foram realizados para obter atrasos de processamento e tempos de travagem. Deste modo foi possível calcular a distância de segurança mínima de travagem face à detecção de um obstáculo
