    Get PDF
This Article analyzes the references to law found in three standard U.S. History textbooks: (1) ALAN BRINKLEY, AMERICAN HISTORY CONNECTING WITH THE PAST 745 (McGraw-Hill Educ., 15th ed. 2015); (2) ERIC FONER, GIVE ME LIBERTY! AN AMERICAN HISTORY 461 (Steve Forman et al. eds., 5th ed. 2017); and (3) DAVID GOLDFIELD ET AL., THE AMERICAN JOURNEY: A HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES (7th ed. Combined vol. 2014, 2011, 2008). The Article includes a quantitative analysis of topics (i.e., tabulating the topics that appear most frequently in the texts arranged chronologically) as well as summaries of those topics. It also discusses and draws conclusions regarding the forces that have shaped the development of American legal historyÔÇöin particular the complex relationships among interest groups, individual historical figures, executives, legislators, and judges

Playing Through Life, Death, and Grief in Fortnite and Elden Ring

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the cultural processes of grief and death practiced in Fortnite and Elden Ring in relation to the military history of the countries in which these games were produced. This close reading utilizes a methodology of media archaeology, visual studies, and liveness theory to analyze the affordances and regional practices present in these games and argue their design and consumption is haunted by the military histories of the United States and Japan respectively. As a result, Fortnite and Elden Ring are demonstrated to function as local sites of grief and mourning in relation to the opposing relationships with the military present in each game\u27s country of origin

The aim of this thesis is to define and defend the justification of Wanuskewin Heritage ParkÔÇÖs eligibility and merits as a United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. The research process included collecting existing information and data; identifying appropriate publications and resources for review; discussing and receiving input from leaders and staff at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Elders and knowledge keepers, and subject matter experts; analysing existing information and data; synthesizing ideas and concepts, particularly as they related to the World Heritage criteria and process; and producing this final thesis. Coursework, fieldwork, literature review, case study reviews, archival studies and interviews with stakeholders and Elders resulted in clear recommendations. Analysis was completed of Canadian and global World Heritage Sites against WanuskewinÔÇÖs proposed case for inscription. The research indicates that Wanuskewin has a strong case for designation under UNESCO World Heritage criterion III: To bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared with a primary focus on the archaeological record as the foundation for nomination. The archaeological records at Wanuskewin are a complete and intact record of human settlement and interaction with their environment. While none of the heritage resources represent the best global example of their type, there is no other location in the world where the assemblage of these resources exist together. Archaeological and heritage resources at Wanuskewin include bison jumps, tipi rings, multi-component habitation sites, a Medicine Wheel and the findings of four petroglyphs. The diversity of resources and the diversity of human populations who visited the site offer a strong foundation for nomination

Urban Growth Dynamics : Analysis of the Evolution Process of Small Urban Centres in Developing Countries

    Get PDF
Despite the fact that small urban centres accommodate the largest share of urban population, in most developing countries small urban centres are neglected by urban analysts. This means there is inadequate information on their growth characteristics and patterns of land use development. The overall aim of this study is to explore the growth, land use and socio-economic characteristics of small urban areas in developing countries, to inform policies and theory. The study used coding and SPSS techniques to analyse data from the in-depth study of a single case study area. Tools and methods for data collection included mapping, household surveys, document review, storytelling, in-depth interviews and observation in the field. The results indicate that the growth of interactions with other centres, the way people access and develop land, and rapid spontaneous growth of settlements are key factors affecting the emergence of different land use categories, while patterns of settlement growth also reflect the uneven provision of basic services. Theoretically, the study supports the propositions regarding land replacement and patterns of settlement development, while challenging assumptions about socio-economic segregation. The thesis contributes to knowledge on the evolution of settlements and their dynamics, changing settlement patterns, and land use reorganisation

An Analysis of Reservation Writing in Where the Pavement Ends from the Perspective of Internal Colonialism

    Get PDF
William Yellow Robe Jr.ÔÇÖs Where the Pavement Ends: Five Native American Plays is his representative drama collection published in 2000. These five dramas faithfully present IndianÔÇÖs life in Reservation in the 1970s. Based on the perspective of Internal Colonialism, this paper reveals the economic situation, political rights, and Civil Movement of Indian in Reservation. How does the Reservation System affect Indian in the 20th Century? This essay argues that Indian Reservation is the product of White colonization, and the negative effects brought by WhitesÔÇÖ colonization cannot be eliminated. Even today, Indian still struggles to find their place in American society.

Rendezvous at Chesuncook: A Chronicle of Surveyors, Landowners, Loggers, Settlers, & Sports

    Get PDF
Abstract provided by the author: Rendezvous at Chesuncook, 1827-1902 is the only comprehensive history of Chesuncook Lake and Chesuncook settlement (village) from 1827 through 1902. The textÔÇÖs two major focal points are people and old photographs. Over 350 biographical sketches include surveyors, landowners, lumbermen, drive bosses, loggers, settlers, and builders of dams and boats. For the 170 plus pictures this book is their only aggregate presentation. The photos communicate a history of what the landscape and settlements once looked like and how they changed over the decades in this book. This book purposely ends December 30, 1902. Through 1902 the loggers were independent and orchestrated their cooperation through their organization the Penobscot Log Driving Company, an entity that reformed every year with those who were logging. The bookÔÇÖs decade-by-decade chapter organization draws attention to their consistent year-to-year remarkable efforts and successes. Within each chapter the content focuses on who surveyed the land, who bought property, who logged, who settled, and who worked with sports; what were their activities; and how and with what did they function. Within this information are the wilderness farms that served the area: Lily Bay, Roach River, Ragged Lake, Ripogenus Lake, Deer Pond, and the head of Chesuncook Lake. The decade-by-decade organization reveals how ways and means of living and logging evolved. For example loggers used horses, but prior to the 1890s the predominant work animal was an ox; why was that? The last chapter, ÔÇťRemembering the drive bosses,ÔÇŁ has pictures of 13 of these 22 men and for everyone a verbal snap shot through which to remember them

The Indian-controlled part of Jammu in the Kashmir region, which is under the joint administration of India, Pakistan and China, has witnessed many wars and loss of life to date, as it is the homeland of the status problem. Although T├╝rkiye does not have a clear Kashmir policy, it has followed the crisis closely, called for a ceasefire and even offered mediation to parties. T├╝rkiye's rhetoric and attitude towards the crisis, its achievements in humanitarian foreign policy, and past mediation experiences indicate that it has the potential to be even more active in this conflict. Ensuring that this potential is strengthened with the mediation phenomenon and the construction of a Kashmir policy that has become clear would enable T├╝rkiye to display a more holistic approach to the continent, as it was aimed within the context of the Asia Again Initiative. It is suggested that T├╝rkiye's Kashmir policy can be constructed with the deductive method by examining T├╝rkiye's policy with Asia first, then South Asia and finally the three states party to the crisis, by making an inference from the general to the specific. In light of the data obtained, it was concluded that T├╝rkiye's bilateral relations with India were strained because of its pro-Pakistani stance in the Kashmir crisis due to its brotherhood theme. In order to have a holistic approach to the region, it is obvious that improving T├╝rkiye's bilateral relations with India, which is an important state in the globalizing world and the geostrategic giant of the Indian continent, can be mutually beneficial. Although the extreme right approach of Modi, the term representative of India, is met with concern in countries where the religion of Islam is dominant, both countries intend to increase cooperation in open dialogue and trade. In this context, if T├╝rkiye's Kashmir policy can be built on the mediation phenomenon of the Kashmir Crisis, and a balanced policy is carried out by presenting goodwill to Pakistan and India, then it is possible to improve relations with India without ignoring Pakistan. It is thought that the US's accompanying T├╝rkiye in this mediation attempt can effectively to make convince India, which is not in favour of foreign intervention, to negotiate. Finally, concluded that T├╝rkiye can build its Kashmir policy through mediation with the contribution of its potential role in the Kashmir Crisis, thus she has the opportunity to approach Asia more holistically and achieve one of its goals under the Asia Again Initiative

    The Emotions Behind the Screen

    Get PDF
This thesis revolves around the narrative form of Dungeons and Dragons, that the players have true free will, which allows for the highest level of storytelling. By reaching this level, the players are able to freely tackle issues in their life and surrounding them, like testing out negative parts of their personality and finding community during events like the COVID pandemic. This, combined with the recent scandal from DnDÔÇÖs publisher Wizards of the Coast poses this question: what exactly is DnD, therapy, art, community, or just a game? This thesis hopes to lead the reader to answer this question in their own terms
