Revisiting the Utility of Industrial Sociology in National Development: The Case of Nigeria

    Get PDF
Sociology as an academic discipline has been entrenched in many Nigerian universities, however, not much is known about how the discipline has contributed or has been contributing to the national development. Although some scholars have discussed some contributions of sociology in the emerging economy like Nigeria, such discussions are often generic and non sub-specialism specific, and thus need to be revisited from time to time in the light of emerging contemporary issues. Against this background, the paper highlighted some socio-economic and political challenges of the Nigerian State. With particular reference to industrial issues, the paper discussed critically how the industrial sociology will benefit the  organisational managers and policy makers for the overall national  development in five key areas of managing industrial relations, corporate governance and leadership, human resource management, privatisation and deregulation, and globalization and use of non-standard workers. The paper concludes that with the emerging industrial and development issues and challenges in Nigeria, the utility of industrial sociology in national development is immeasurable.Key words: industrial sociology, corporate governance, policy makers, privatisation, national developmen

The paper analyzes the networks of U.S. and Taiwan based electronics contract manufacturers in South China, today the world´s most important location for low-cost mass production in the electronics industry. Based on extensive empirical research, the paper traces the production sites, the organization of manufacturing, and the workforce policies of contract manufacturers in the region, and discusses perspectives and limits of industrial upgrading, especially with regard to the role of labor. In theoretical terms, the author attempts to integrate an analysis of "global flagship networks" with concepts of industrial sociology.

Alvin W. Gouldner and Industrial Sociology at Columbia University

Alvin W Gouldner (1920-1980) was a prolific sociologist of the post-World War II era who spent the early part of his career (the 1950s) in the field of industrial sociology. A case study of Gouldner\u27s early life and career is useful insofar as it intertwines with the development of industrial sociology as a distinct subfield within sociology. Through this analysis we are also better able to understand how and in what ways a burgeoning organizational studies program developed at Columbia University during the 1940s. This analysis of the historical and cultural contexts within which Gouldner came to prominence as an industrial sociologist at Columbia, and the intellectual program that resulted, can also help shed light on more recent trends in organizational studies

Sociological Futures and the Sociology of Work

This essay is a response to the call for a discussion about future trends in sociology by focusing broadly on the sub-discipline of work and employment. In doing so the piece directly engages with earlier interventions made by John Scott (2005) and Gayle Letherby (2005) in Sociological Research Online. It examines the current state of the sociology of work by charting its foundation and subsequent development. It suggests that there is currently a problem in the area caused in part by intellectual trends and fragmentation. It argues that those sociologists working in the field need to engage collectively in a reflective process to refocus the subject combining elements from its \'golden age\' as well as from more contemporary sources.Sociology of Work and Employment; Industrial Sociology; Sociological Futures; Labour Process
