    ON THE ANALYSIS OF TURBULENT FLOW SIGNALS BY ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS AND ADAPTIVE TECHNIQUES

    ABSTRACT Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and evolution are applied to the analysis of turbulent signals. In a first instance, a new trainable delay based artificial neural network is used to analyze Hot Wire Anemometer (HW) signals obtained at different positions within the wake of a circular cylinder with Reynolds number values ranging from 2000 to 8000. Results show that these networks are capable of performing accurate short term predictions of the turbulent signal. In addition, the ANNs can be set in a long term prediction mode resulting in a sort of non linear filter able to extract the features having to do with the larger eddies and coherent structures. In a second stage these networks are used to reconstruct a regularly sampled signal straight from the irregularly sampled one provided by a Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA). The irregular sampling dynamics of the LDA signals is governed by the arrival of the seeding particles, superimposing the already complex turbulent signal characteristics. To cope with this complexity, an evolutionary based strategy is used to perform an adaptive and continuous online training of the ANNs. This approach permits obtaining a regularly sampled signal not by interpolating the original one, as it is often done, but by modeling it

    Neurophysiological correlates underlying social behavioural adjustment of conformity

    [eng] Conformity is the act of changing one’s behaviour to adjust to other human beings. It is a crucial social adaptation that happens when people cooperate, where one sacrifices their own perception, expectations, or beliefs to reach convergence with another person. The aim of the present study was to increase the understanding of the neurophysiological underpinnings regarding the social behavioural adjustment of conformity. We start by introducing cooperation and how it is ingrained in human behaviour. Then we explore the different processes that the brain requires for the social behavioural adjustment of conformity. To engage in this social adaptation, a person needs a self-referenced learning mechanism based on a predictive model that helps them track the prediction errors from unexpected events. Also, the brain uses its monitoring and control systems to encode different value functions used in action selection. The use of different learning models in neuroscience, such as reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms, has been a success story identifying learning systems by means of the mapped activity of different regions in the brain. Importantly, experimental paradigms which has been used to study conformity have not been based in a social interaction setting and, hence, the results, cannot be used to explain an inherently social phenomenon. The main goal of the present thesis is to study the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the social behavioural adjustment of conformity and its modulation with repeated interaction. To reach this goal, we have first designed a new experimental task where conformity appears spontaneously between two persons and in a reiterative way. This design exposes learning acquisition processes, which require iterative loops, as well as other cognitive control mechanisms such as feedback processing, value-based decision making and attention. The first study shows that people who previously cooperate increase their level of convergence and report a significantly more satisfying overall experience. In addition, participants learning on their counterparts’ behaviour can be explained using a RL algorithm as opposed to when they do not have previously cooperated. In the second study, we have studied the event-related potentials (ERP) and oscillatory power underlying conformity. ERP results show different levels of cognitive engagement that are associated to distinct levels of conformity. Also, time-frequency analysis shows evidence in theta, alpha and beta related to different functions such as cognitive control, attention and, also, reward processing, supporting the idea that convergence between dyads acts as a social reward. Finally, in the third study, we explored the intra- and inter- oscillatory connectivity between electrodes related to behavioural convergence. In intra-brain oscillatory connectivity coherence, we have found two different dynamics related to attention and executive functions in alpha. Also, we have found that the learning about peer’s behaviour as computed using a RL is mediated by theta oscillatory connectivity. Consequently, combined evidence from Study 2 and Study 3 suggests that both cognitive control and learning computations happening in the social behavioural adaptation of conformity are signalled in theta frequency band. The present work is one of the first studies describing, with credible evidence, that conformity, when this occurs willingly and spontaneously rather than induced, engages different brain activity underlying reward-guided learning, cognitive control, and attention.[spa] La conformidad es el acto de cambiar el comportamiento de uno a favor de ajustarnos a otros seres humanos. El objetivo del presente estudio ha sido tratar de aportar a la comprensión de las estructuras neurofisiológicas que soportan un ajuste social como el de la conformidad. En la primera parte de esta tesis comenzamos hablando de la cooperación y lo profundamente arraigada que está en nuestro comportamiento. Más tarde exploramos diferentes procesos que el cerebro requiere en el ajuste social de la conformidad. Así pues, para involucrarse en esta adaptación social, una persona requiere de un mecanismo de aprendizaje auto-referenciado basado en un modelo predictivo que le ayude a seguir el rastro de los errores de predicción que acompañan a los eventos inesperados. Además, el cerebro usa sus sistemas de control y predicción para codificar diferentes funciones de valor usadas en la selección de acción. El uso de diferentes modelos de aprendizaje en neurociencia, como los algoritmos de aprendizaje por refuerzo (RL), han sido una historia de éxito a la hora de identificar los sistemas de aprendizaje a través del mapeo de la actividad de diferentes regiones del cerebro. Es importante destacar que los paradigmas experimentales que se han usado para estudiar la conformidad no se han basado en entornos de interacción social y que, por lo tanto, sus resultados no pueden usarse para explicar un fenómeno inherentemente social. El objetivo principal de la presente tesis es el estudio de los mecanismos neurofisiológicos que fundamentan el comportamiento de ajuste social de la conformidad y su modulación con la interacción repetida. Para alcanzar este objetivo, primero hemos diseñado una nueva tarea experimental en la que la conformidad aparece de forma espontánea entre dos personas y, además, de forma reiterativa. Este diseño permite exponer tanto los procesos de adquisición del aprendizaje, que requieren de ciclos iterativos, así como otros mecanismos de control cognitivo tales como el procesamiento de la retroalimentación, las tomas de decisiones basadas en procesos valorativos y la atención. El primer estudio nos muestra que la gente que coopera previamente incrementa sus niveles de convergencia y reportan significativamente una experiencia generalmente más satisfactoria en el experimento. Adicionalmente, un modelo de RL nos explica que los participantes tratan de aprender del comportamiento de sus parejas en mayor medida si estos han cooperado previamente. En el segundo estudio, hemos estudiado los potenciales relacionados con eventos (ERP) y el poder de las oscilaciones que sustentan la conformidad. Los estudios de ERP muestran diferentes niveles de implicación cognitiva asociados con diferentes niveles de conformidad. Además, los análisis de tiempo-frecuencia muestran evidencia en theta, alfa y beta relacionados con diferentes funciones como el control cognitivo, la atención, y, también, el procesamiento de la recompensa, apoyando la idea de que la convergencia entre díadas actúa como una recompensa social. Finalmente, en el tercer estudio, exploramos la conectividad oscilatoria intra e inter entre electrodos que se pudieran relacionar con la conducta de convergencia. A propósito de la conectividad oscilatoria coherente intra, hemos hallado dos dinámicas relacionadas con la atención y las funciones ejecutivas en alfa. Asimismo, hemos encontrado que el aprendizaje de la conducta de la pareja computada a través de RL está mediada a través de la conectividad oscilatoria de theta. Consecuentemente, la evidencia combinada entre el estudio 2 y el estudio 3 sugiere que conjuntamente el control cognitivo y las computaciones de aprendizaje que ocurren en la conducta de adaptación social de la conformidad están relacionadas con la actividad de la banda de frecuencia theta. Este trabajo constituye uno de los primeros estudios que describen, con evidencia creíble, que la conformidad, cuando ocurre voluntaria y espontáneamente a diferencia cuando esta es inducida, involucra actividad del cerebro que se fundamenta en el aprendizaje guiado por reforzamiento, el control cognitivo y la atención

    Evolutionary theory and the ultimate-proximate distinction in the human behavioral sciences

    To properly understand behavior, we must obtain both ultimate and proximate explanations. Put briefly, ultimate explanations are concerned with why a behavior exists, and proximate explanations are concerned with how it works. These two types of explanation are complementary and the distinction is critical to evolutionary explanation. We are concerned that they have become conflated in some areas of the evolutionary literature on human behavior. This article brings attention to these issues. We focus on three specific areas: the evolution of cooperation, transmitted culture, and epigenetics. We do this to avoid confusion and wasted effort—dangers that are particularly acute in interdisciplinary research. Throughout this article, we suggest ways in which misunderstanding may be avoided in the future

    Perceptual Generalization and Context in a Network MemoryInspired Long-Term Memory for Artificial Cognition

    Abstract: In the framework of open-ended learning cognitive architectures for robots, this paper deals with thedesign of a Long-Term Memory (LTM) structure that can accommodate the progressive acquisition ofexperience-based decision capabilities, or what different authors call “automation” of what is learnt, asa complementary system to more common prospective functions. The LTM proposed here provides fora relational storage of knowledge nuggets given the form of artificial neural networks (ANNs) that isrepresentative of the contexts in which they are relevant in a configural associative structure. It alsoaddresses the problem of continuous perceptual spaces and the task- and context-related generalizationor categorization of perceptions in an autonomous manner within the embodied sensorimotor apparatusof the robot.     Motivation as a Tool for Designing Lifelong Learning Robots

    [Abstract] Designing robots has usually implied knowing beforehand the tasks to be carried out and in what domains. However, in the case of fully autonomous robots this is not possible. Autonomous robots need to operate in an open-ended manner, that is, deciding on the most interesting goals to achieve in domains that are not known at design time. This obviously poses a challenge from the point of view of designing the robot control structure. In particular, the main question that arises is how to endow the robot with a designer defined purpose and with means to translate that purpose into operational decisions without any knowledge of what situations the robot will find itself in. In this paper, we provide a formalization of motivation from an engineering perspective that allows for the structured design of purposeful robots. This formalization is based on a definition of the concepts of robot needs and drives, which are related through experience to the appropriate goals in specific domains. To illustrate the process, a motivational system to guide the operation of a real robot is constructed using this approach.     Altruistically Inclined?: The Behavioral Sciences, Evolutionary Theory, and the Origins of Reciprocity

    Altruistically Inclined? examines the implications of recent research in the natural sciences for two important social scientific approaches to individual behavior: the economic/rational choice approach and the sociological/anthropological. It considers jointly two controversial and related ideas: the operation of group selection within early human evolutionary processes and the likelihood of modularity—domain-specific adaptations in our cognitive mechanisms and behavioral predispositions. Experimental research shows that people will often cooperate in one-shot prisoner\u27s dilemma (PD) games and reject positive offers in ultimatum games, contradicting commonly accepted notions of rationality. Upon first appearance, predispositions to behave in this fashion could not have been favored by natural selection operating only at the level of the individual organism. Emphasizing universal and variable features of human culture, developing research on how the brain functions, and refinements of thinking about levels of selection in evolutionary processes, Alexander J. Field argues that humans are born with the rudiments of a PD solution module—and differentially prepared to learn norms supportive of it. His emphasis on failure to harm, as opposed to the provision of affirmative assistance, as the empirically dominant form of altruistic behavior is also novel. The point of departure and principal point of reference is economics.     Philosophy of immunology

    Philosophy of immunology is a subfield of philosophy of biology dealing with ontological and epistemological issues related to the studies of the immune system. While speculative investigations and abstract analyses have always been part of immune theorizing, until recently philosophers have largely ignored immunology. Yet the implications for understanding the philosophical basis of organismal functions framed by immunity offer new perspectives on fundamental questions of biology and medicine. Developed in the context of history of medicine, theoretical biology, and medical anthropology, philosophy of immunology differs from these related branches of study in its focus on traditional philosophical questions concerning identity, individuality, ecology, cognition, scientific methodology and theory construction. This broad agenda derives from immunology’s multifaceted research program that has developed from its initial clinical challenges of host defense, transplantation, autoimmunity, tumor immunology, and allergy. In addition to these well-established research areas, immunity is now understood to play a central role in other physiological functions, development, ecology, and evolutionary mechanics. Holding together these diverse domains of inquiry lie philosophical commitments oriented by organismal identity. In this regard, pertinent issues are raised concerning cognition (organization of immune perception and information processing), the character of individuality (framed by the ecological context of immune-mediated assimilation and rejection), and the dynamics of complex systems (understood as holistic systems biology). Indeed, immunology, in the context of cognitive science, evolutionary biology, environmental sciences, and development provides multi-focal perspectives for philosophy of science

    Towards adaptive argumentation learning systems : theoretical and practical considerations in the design of argumentation learning systems

    This dissertation addresses four issues of pivotal importance in realizing the promises of adaptive argumentation learning systems: (1) User interface: How can argumentation user interfaces be designed to effectively structure and support problem solving, peer interaction, and learning? (2) Software architecture: How can software architectures of adaptive argumentation learning systems be designed to be employable across different argumentation domains and application scenarios in a flexible and cost-effective manner? (3) Diagnostics: How can user behavior be analyzed, automatically and accurately, to drive automated adaptations and help generation? (4) Adaptation: How can strategies for automated adaptation and support be designed to promote problem solving, peer interaction, and learning in an optimal fashion? Regarding issue (1), this dissertation investigates argument diagrams and structured discussion interfaces, two areas of focal interest in argumentation learning research during the past decades. The foundation for such structuring approaches is given by theories of learning and teaching with knowledge representations (theory of representational guidance) and collaboration scripts (script theory of guidance in computer-supported collaborative learning). This dissertation brings these two strands of research together and presents a computer-based learning environment that combines both approaches to support students in conducting high-quality discussions of controversial texts. An empirical study confirms that this combined approach has positive impact on the quality of discussions, thus, underpins the theoretical basis of the approach. Regarding issue (2), this dissertation presents a software framework for enhancing argumentation systems with adaptive support mechanisms. Adaptive support functionality of past argumentation systems has been tailored to particular domains and application scenarios. A novel software framework is presented that abstracts from the specific demands of different domains and application scenarios to provide a more general approach. The approach comprises an extensive configuration subsystem that allows the flexible definition of intelligent software agents, that is, software components able to reason and act autonomously to help students engage in fruitful learning activities. A graphical authoring tool has been conceptualized and implemented to simplify the process of defining and administering software agents beyond what has been achieved with the provided framework system. Among other things, the authoring tool allows, for the first time, specifying relevant patterns in argument diagrams using a graphical language. Empirical results indicate the high potential of the authoring approach but also challenges for future research. Regarding issue (3), the dissertation investigates two alternative approaches to automatically analyzing argumentation learning activities: the knowledge-driven and the data-driven analysis method. The knowledge-driven approach utilizes a pattern search component to identify relevant structures in argument diagrams based on declarative pattern specifications. The capabilities and appropriateness of this approach are demonstrated through three exemplary applications, for which pedagogically relevant patterns have been defined and implemented within the component. The approach proves particularly useful for patterns of limited complexity in scenarios with sufficient expert knowledge available. The data-driven approach is based on machine learning techniques, which have been employed to induce computational classifiers for important aspects of graphical online discussions, such as off-topic contributions, reasoned claims, and question-answer interactions. Validation results indicate that this approach can be realistically used even for complex classification tasks involving natural language. This research constitutes the first investigation on the use of machine learning techniques to analyze diagram-based educational discussions. The dissertation concludes with discussing the four addressed research challenges in the broader context of existing theories and empirical results. The pros and cons of different options in the design of argumentation learning systems are juxtaposed; areas for future research are identified. This final part of the dissertation gives researchers and practitioners a synopsis of the current state of the art in the design of argumentation learning systems and its theoretical and empirical underpinning. Special attention is paid to issue (4), with an in-depth discussion of existing adaptation approaches and corresponding empirical results.Diese Dissertationsschrift behandelt die folgenden vier Fragestellungen, welche bei der Realisierung adaptiver Argumentationssysteme von zentraler Bedeutung sind: (1) Benutzerschnittstelle: Wie müssen Benutzerschnittstellen beschaffen sein, um Problemlöse-, Kooperations- und Lernprozesse effektiv zu strukturieren und zu unterstützen? (2) Softwarearchitektur: Wie können die Funktionalitäten eines adaptiven Argumentationslernsystems in eine Softwarearchitektur abgebildet werden, welche flexibel und mit angemessenem Aufwand in verschiedenen Bereichen und Szenarien einsetzbar ist? (3) Diagnostik: Wie kann Benutzerverhalten automatisch und mit hoher Genauigkeit analysiert werden, um automatisierte Anpassungen und Hilfestellungen effektiv zu steuern? (4) Adaption: Wie sollten automatisierte Anpassungen und Hilfestellungen ausgestaltet werden, um Problemlöse-, Kooperations- und Lernprozesse optimal zu unterstützen? Hinsichtlich Fragestellung (1) untersucht diese Arbeit Argumentationsdiagramme und strukturierte Onlinediskussionen, zwei Schwerpunkte der Forschung zu Lernsystemen für Argumentation der vergangenen Jahre. Die Grundlage solcher Strukturierungsansätze bilden Theorien zum Lehren und Lernen mit Wissensrepräsentationen (theory of representational guidance) und Kooperationsskripten (script theory of guidance in computer-supported collaborative learning). Diese Arbeit führt beide Forschungsstränge in einer neuartigen Lernumgebung zusammen, die beide Ansätze vereint, um Lernende beim Diskutieren kontroverser Texte zu unterstützen. Eine empirische Untersuchung zeigt, dass sich dieser kombinierte Ansatz positiv auf die Diskussionsqualität auswirkt und bekräftigt damit die zu Grunde liegenden theoretischen Annahmen. Hinsichtlich Fragestellung (2) stellt diese Arbeit ein Software-Rahmensystem zur Bereitstellung adaptiver Unterstützungsmechanismen in Argumentationssystemen vor. Das Rahmensystem abstrahiert von domänen- und anwendungsspezifischen Besonderheiten und stellt damit einen generelleren Ansatz im Vergleich zu früheren Systemen dar. Der Ansatz umfasst ein umfangreiches Konfigurationssystem zur Definition intelligenter Softwareagenten, d. h. Softwarekomponenten, die eigeständig schlussfolgern und handeln, um Lernprozesse zu unterstützen. Um das Definieren und Administrieren von Softwareagenten über das bereitgestellte Rahmensystem hinaus zu vereinfachen, wurde ein grafisches Autorenwerkzeug konzipiert und entwickelt. Unter anderem erlaubt dieses erstmals, relevante Muster in Argumentationsdiagrammen ohne Programmierung mittels einer grafischen Sprache zu spezifizieren. Empirische Befunde zeigen neben dem hohen Potential des Ansatzes auch die Notwendigkeit weiterführender Forschung. Hinsichtlich Fragestellung (3) untersucht diese Arbeit zwei alternative Ansätze zur automatisierten Analyse von Lernaktivitäten im Bereich Argumentation: die wissensbasierte und die datenbasierte Analysemethodik. Der wissensbasierte Ansatz wurde mittels einer Softwarekomponente zur Mustersuche in Argumentationsdiagrammen umgesetzt, welche auf Grundlage deklarativer Musterbeschreibungen arbeitet. Die Möglichkeiten und Eignung des Ansatzes werden anhand von drei Beispielszenarien demonstriert, für die verschiedenartige, pädagogisch relevante Muster innerhalb der entwickelten Softwarekomponente definiert wurden. Der Ansatz erweist sich insbesondere als nützlich für Muster eingeschränkter Komplexität in Szenarien, für die Expertenwissen in ausreichendem Umfang verfügbar ist. Der datenbasierte Ansatz wurde mittels maschineller Lernverfahren umgesetzt. Mit deren Hilfe wurden Klassifikationsroutinen zur Analyse zentraler Aspekte von Onlinediskussionen, wie beispielsweise themenfremde Beiträge, begründete Aussagen und Frage-Antwort-Interaktionen, algorithmisch hergeleitet. Validierungsergebnisse zeigen, dass sich dieser Ansatz selbst für komplexe Klassifikationsprobleme eignet, welche die Berücksichtigung natürlicher Sprache erfordern. Dies ist die erste Arbeit zum Einsatz maschineller Lernverfahren zur Analyse von diagrammbasierten Lerndiskussionen. Die Arbeit schließt mit einer Diskussion des aktuellen Forschungsstands hinsichtlich der vier Fragestellungen im breiteren Kontext existierender Theorien und empirischer Befunde. Die Vor- und Nachteile verschiedener Optionen für die Gestaltung von Lernsystemen für Argumentation werden gegenübergestellt und zukünftige Forschungsfelder vorgeschlagen. Dieser letzte Teil der Arbeit bietet Forschern und Anwendern einen umfassenden Überblick des aktuellen Forschungsstands bezüglich des Designs computerbasierter Argumentationslernsysteme und den zugrunde liegenden lehr- und lerntheoretischen Erkenntnissen. Insbesondere wird auf Fragestellung (4) vertiefend eingegangen und bisherige Adaptionsansätze einschließlich entsprechender empirischer Befunde erörtert
