An Indoor Navigation System Using a Sensor Fusion Scheme on Android Platform
With the development of wireless communication networks, smart phones have become a necessity for people’s daily lives, and they meet not only the needs of basic functions for users such as sending a message or making a phone call, but also the users’ demands for entertainment, surfing the Internet and socializing. Navigation functions have been commonly utilized, however the navigation function is often based on GPS (Global Positioning System) in outdoor environments, whereas a number of applications need to navigate indoors. This paper presents a system to achieve high accurate indoor navigation based on Android platform. To do this, we design a sensor fusion scheme for our system. We divide the system into three main modules: distance measurement module, orientation detection module and position update module. We use an efficient way to estimate the stride length and use step sensor to count steps in distance measurement module. For orientation detection module, in order to get the optimal result of orientation, we then introduce Kalman filter to de-noise the data collected from different sensors. In the last module, we combine the data from the previous modules and calculate the current location. Results of experiments show that our system works well and has high accuracy in indoor situations
Evaluating a human-robot interface for exploration missions
The research reported in this paper concerns the design, implementation, and experimental evaluation of a Human-Robot Interface for stationary remote operators, implemented for a PC computer. The GUI design and functionality is described. An Autonomy Management Model has been implemented and explained. We have conducted user evaluation, making two set of experiments, that will be described and the resulting data analyzed. The conclusions give an insight on the most important usability concerns, regarding the operator situational awareness. The scalability of the interface is also experimentally studied
User preferences on route instruction types for mobile indoor route guidance
Adaptive mobile wayfinding systems are being developed to ease wayfinding in the indoor environment. They present wayfinding information to the user, which is adapted to the context. Wayfinding information can be communicated by using different types of route instructions, such as text, photos, videos, symbols or a combination thereof. The need for a different type of route instruction may vary at decision points, for example because of its complexity. Furthermore, these needs may be different for different user characteristics (e.g., age, gender, level of education). To determine this need for information, an online survey has been executed where participants rated 10 different route instruction types at several decision points in a case study building. Results show that the types with additional text were preferred over those without text. The photo instructions, combined with text, generally received the highest ratings, especially from first-time visitors. 3D simulations were appreciated at complex decision points and by younger people. When text (with symbols) is considered as a route instruction type, it is best used for the start or end instruction
Seramai
325 orang pelajar Diploma in Construction Technology dari Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi

Localization, Visualization And Evacuation Guidance System In Emergency Situations
Urban search and rescue is needed for a variety of emergencies or disasters, including tornadoes, floods, dam failures, technological accidents, and terrorist activities. The efficiency to save people is becoming very important. With the development of the technology, people are trying to find a better way to help people get out of the dangerous places as soon as possible. DIORAMA system has been proposed to help with this problem and turns out very successful on improving efficiency during emergency situation. However, the current DIORAMA system is not perfect for all scenarios, for example, there are some outdoor environments do not support GPS service. Also, the RFID reader is very heavy for responders to carry and the indoor environment is not applicable for DIORAMA system. Besides, there are lack of forensic visualization toolkits that are able to help the incident commander analyze the responders’ behavior and efficiency. In this project, we propose a Localization, Visualization and Evacuation Guidance System in Emergency Situations. The functionalities in this system include localization in outdoor environments using BLE. Besides, for outdoor environments, some forensic visualization toolkit that can help the responder analyze the responders’ behavior with the capability of visualization and representation of data clearly as well as replay the task, detect anomalies and visualize the anomalies clearly is also provided in improving the efficiency and organization in the future task. In addition, the system also includes an indoor localization, navigation guidance and visualization system that provides guidance for people to exit a dangerous building as soon as possible. This system is able to localize the position of evacuees, and construct the exit path that helps reduce the escape time as well as provide a navigation guidance that is able to guide the user to the exit. In addition, an analyst simulation application is provided to simulate the evacuees in a building and evaluate the evacuation time for evacuees given specific path generation algorithm
