    Speed performance of space vector pulse width modulation direct torque for five leg inverter served dual three-phase induction motor

    Independent control of multi-machine with singleconverter systems is the motivation of this research study. As in the previous literature review, there is no report regarding speed control applying space vector pulse width modulation direct torque control (SVPWM-DTC) method for dual three-phase induction motor (IM) fed by a five leg inverter (FLI). Therefore, in this paper, a new and simple control method based on SVPWM-DTC for dual three-phase induction motors with only one drive of five-leg voltage source inverter is investigated. The method effectively allows independent control of two three-phase IMs. Simulations of different speed commands and variation of load condition tests have been performed. Future work is to do comparative study between vector controls (VC) versus DTC methods to the FLI performance

    Multiphase induction motor drives - a technology status review

    The area of multiphase variable-speed motor drives in general and multiphase induction motor drives in particular has experienced a substantial growth since the beginning of this century. Research has been conducted worldwide and numerous interesting developments have been reported in the literature. An attempt is made to provide a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in this area. The elaborated aspects include advantages of multiphase induction machines, modelling of multiphase induction machines, basic vector control and direct torque control schemes and PWM control of multiphase voltage source inverters. The authors also provide a detailed survey of the control strategies for five-phase and asymmetrical six-phase induction motor drives, as well as an overview of the approaches to the design of fault tolerant strategies for post-fault drive operation, and a discussion of multiphase multi-motor drives with single inverter supply. Experimental results, collected from various multiphase induction motor drive laboratory rigs, are also included to facilitate the understanding of the drive operatio

    Development of combined vector and torque control methods for independent two induction motor drives

    Many applications use two or more motors operating in parallel configuration by using one variable speed drive. This system is able to control these multiple motors at the same desired motor speed operation which provide advantages in terms of components and cost reduction. However, the system is not able to control each motor separately if it is desired to operate at different speeds and it also cannot withstand the load disturbance. To address this problem, the design of combined Vector Control-Direct Torque Control (DTC) methods is proposed and their performance is investigated for the case of independent controlled two induction motors fed by single Five Leg Inverter (FLI) method. Double Zero Sequence (DZS) Injection Method Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) scheme is used for the FLI. Simulation results from the Simulink/Matlab that verify the validity of the method are also included. The results show the ability of the proposed method to control motor speed independently under forward-reverse step speed command and load disturbance condition

    The cost reduction of power-electronic devices, the increase in their reliability, efficiency, and power capability, and lower development times, together with more demanding application requirements, has driven the development of several new inverter topologies recently introduced in the industry, particularly medium-voltage converters. New more complex inverter topologies and new application fields come along with additional control challenges, such as voltage imbalances, power-quality issues, higher efficiency needs, and fault-tolerant operation, which necessarily requires the parallel development of modulation schemes. Therefore, recently, there have been significant advances in the field of modulation of dc/ac converters, which conceptually has been dominated during the last several decades almost exclusively by classic pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods.     Vectorial formalism for analysis and design of polyphase synchronous machines

    A vectorial formalism for analysis and design of polyphase synchronous machines without reluctance and saturation effects is described. We prove the equivalence of such a machine with a set of magnetically independent machines, which are electrically and mechanically coupled. Specific problems of polyphase machines can thus be favorably analyzed with this concept. Rules of conception and constraints on electric supply can be deduced. Moreover the vectorial approach, which generalizes the complex phasor method, can also be used to control n-leg Voltage Source Inverters. This methodology is applied to 3-phase and 6- phase synchronous machines

    Extended Kalman filter based sliding mode control of parallel-connected two five-phase PMSM drive system

    This paper presents sliding mode control of sensor-less parallel-connected two five-phase permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) fed by a single five-leg inverter. For both machines, the rotor speeds and rotor positions as well as load torques are estimated by using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) scheme. Fully decoupled control of both machines is possible via an appropriate phase transposition while connecting the stator windings parallel and employing proposed speed sensor-less method. In the resulting parallel-connected two-machine drive, the independent control of each machine in the group is achieved by controlling the stator currents and speed of each machine under vector control consideration. The effectiveness of the proposed Extended Kalman Filter in conjunction with the sliding mode control is confirmed through application of different load torques for wide speed range operation. Comparison between sliding mode control and PI control of the proposed two-motor drive is provided. The speed response shows a short rise time, an overshoot during reverse operation and settling times is 0.075 s when PI control is used. The speed response obtained by SMC is without overshoot and follows its reference and settling time is 0.028 s. Simulation results confirm that, in transient periods, sliding mode controller remarkably outperforms its counterpart PI controller. 2018 by the authors.Scopu

    Comparizon of Conventional and Unconventional 5-phase PM Motor Structures for Naval Applications

    Multi-phase motors are widely used in marine propulsion. In this paper, a Multi-machine modeling of Surface Mounted PM motors is presented and applied to a 5-phase one. The latter is proved to be equivalent to a set of two-phase fictitious machines each ones being characterized by a set of specific harmonic rank. A simple control consists in supplying each fictitious machine by a current which contains only one harmonic. A five phase machine is then supplied by currents with only both first and third harmonics. Considering this kind of control, it is proved that for given stator resistance and average torque the Joule losses and the torque ripple are minimized if a simple criterion on the harmonics of electromotive force at constant speed is fullfilled. Different structures of rotor are then compared to examine numerically which improvements can be practically obtaine
