In the past few years adaptive decode-and-forward cooperative diversity systems have been studied intensively in literature. Many schemes and protocols have been proposed to enhance the performance of the cooperative systems while trying to alleviate its drawbacks. One of the recent schemes that had been shown to give high improvements in performance is the best-relay selection scheme. In the best-relay selection scheme only one relaying nodes among the relays available in the system is selected to forward the source\u27s message to the destination. The best relay is selected as the relay node that can achieve the highest end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (snr) at the destination node. Performance improvements have been reported as compared to regular fixed decode-and-forward relaying in which all relays are required to forward the source\u27s message to the destination in terms of spectral efficiency and diversity order. In this thesis, we use simulations to show the improvement in the outage performance of the best-relay selection scheme

Simulações de Monte Carlo validam os resultados analíticos apresentadosAbstract: Underlay spectrum sharing has been proposed as a promising technique to alleviate the problem of spectrum scarcity and underutilization, by enabling secondary (unlicensed) users to concurrently access a licensed band, provided that the resulting interference on the primary (licensed) users remains below a given acceptable level. However, such a technique implies that the transmit power at the secondary network must be constrained, thereby compromising the communication reliability and coverage. To counteract this, cooperative relaying techniques, which provide a new form of spatial diversity, can be exploited as an effective means to boost the performance of the secondary network. Indeed, the joint use of both techniques¿underlay spectrum sharing and cooperative relaying¿in cognitive relaying networks has drawn special attention, since the overall spectral efficiency and the secondary-network performance can be significantly improved. This dissertation comprises four main contributions in this field. In particular, we examine the combined effect of two crucial power constraints on the outage performance of cognitive relaying networks, namely, the maximum tolerable interference power at the primary receiver and the maximum transmit power at the secondary users. We focus on relaying schemes operating under the decode-and-forward protocol, for scenarios in which the direct link between source and destination is available to convey useful information. As a first contribution, we analyze the performance of two incremental half-duplex relaying schemes, which exploit the spatial diversity of the direct links in a multiuser scenario. Our second contribution investigates the impact of outdated channel estimates on the destination-scheduling mechanism of one of those incremental schemes, from the perspective of a cooperative network only, that is, in the absence of spectrum sharing. The third contribution addresses cognitive full-duplex relaying networks. More specifically, we assess the system performance as a function of both the residual self-interference, which is inherent to the full-duplex relaying mode, and the underlay spectrum-sharing power constraints. As a final contribution, driven by the tradeoff between the spectral-efficiency loss and the residual self-interference problem, intrinsic to the half- and full-duplex relaying modes, respectively, we propose and analyze an adaptive transmission scheme whereby, before each communication process, one out of the following transmission modes is selected: half-duplex relaying, full-duplex relaying, or direct transmission. For all the considered scenarios, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability are derived. In addition, an asymptotic analysis is performed to obtain further insights on the diversity order and outage behavior of the secondary network at the high signal-to-noise ratio regime. Monte Carlo simulations corroborate the accuracy of the presented mathematical analysisDoutoradoTelecomunicações e TelemáticaDoutor em Engenharia ElétricaCAPE

Exchange of information is essential in any society and the demand for faster, cheaper, and secure communications is increasing every day. With other hi-tech initiatives like IPv6 and Internet-of-Things (IOT) already in the horizon, demand for broadband is set to escalate beyond its current level. Inherently laden in the challenges posed by this technology are fresh opportunities in terms of penetration of data services into rural communities and development of innovative strategies for more efficient use of the grid. Though still in its developmental phase/stage, Power Line Communication (PLC) has grown beyond theoretical fantasy to become a reality. The proofs are the readily available PLC systems that can be purchased off the shelfto achieve in-house networking and the much talked about, smart metering technology; generally regarded as the “new bride” in utilities industry. One of the biggest gains of PLC is its use of existing electrical cables, thereby eliminating cost of installation and maintenance of data cables. However, given that the power infrastructure was traditionally built to deliver electricity, data signals do suffer various forms of distortions and impairments as they transit it. This paper presents a tutorial on the deployed wireless system technique which is to be adapted to PLC scenario for the purpose of managing the available source energy for achieving reliable communication system. One of these techniques is the cooperative diversity. Its application and deployment in power line environment is explored. The improvement achieved through cooperative diversity in some PLC systems were presented along with the associated limitations. Finally, future areas of research which will further improve the reliability of PLC systems and reduce its power consumption during transmission is shown

In wireless broadband communications, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted as a promising technique to mitigate multi-path fading and provide high spectral efficiency. In addition, cooperative communication can explore spatial diversity where several users or nodes share their resources and cooperate through distributed transmission. The concatenation of the OFDM technique with relaying systems can enhance the overall performance in terms of spectral efficiency and improve robustness against the detrimental effects of fading. Hybrid relay selection is proposed to overcome the drawbacks of conventional forwarding schemes. However, exciting hybrid relay protocols may suffer some limitations when used for transmission over frequency-selective channels. The combination of cooperative protocols with OFDM systems has been extensively utilized in current wireless networks, and have become a promising solution for future high data rate broadband communication systems including 3D video transmission. This thesis covers two areas of high data rate networks. In the first part, several techniques using cooperative OFDM systems are presented including relay selection, space time block codes, resource allocation and adaptive bit and power allocation to introduce diversity. Four (4) selective OFDM relaying schemes are studied over wireless networks; selective OFDM; selective OFDMA; selective block OFDM and selective unequal block OFDM. The closed-form expression of these schemes is derived. By exploiting the broadcast nature, it is demonstrated that spatial diversity can be improved. The upper bound of outage probability for the protocols is derived. A new strategy for hybrid relay selection is proposed to improve the system performance by removing the sub-carriers that experience deep fading. The per subcarrier basis selection is considered with respect to the predefined threshold signal-to-noise ratio. The closed-form expressions of the proposed protocol in terms of bit error probability and outage probability are derived and compared with conventional hybrid relay selection. Adaptive bit and power allocation is also discussed to improve the system performance. Distributed space frequency coding applied to hybrid relay selection to obtain full spatial and full data rate transmission is explored. Two strategies, single cluster and multiple clusters, are considered for the Alamouti code at the destination by using a hybrid relay protocol. The power allocation with and without sub-carrier pairing is also investigated to mitigate the effect of multipath error propagation in frequency-selective channels. The second part of this thesis investigates the application of cooperative OFDM systems to high data rate transmission. Recently, there has been growing attention paid to 3D video transmission over broadband wireless channels. Two strategies for relay selection hybrid relay selection and first best second best are proposed to implement unequal error protection in the physical layer over error prone channels. The closed-form expressions of bit error probability and outage probability for both strategies are examined. The peak signal-to-noise ratio is presented to show the quality of reconstruction of the left and right views
