    SgWalk: Location Recommendation by User Subgraph-Based Graph Embedding

    Popularity of Location-based Social Networks (LBSNs) provides an opportunity to collect massive multi-modal datasets that contain geographical information, as well as time and social interactions. Such data is a useful resource for generating personalized location recommendations. Such heterogeneous data can be further extended with notions of trust between users, the popularity of locations, and the expertise of users. Recently the use of Heterogeneous Information Network (HIN) models and graph neural architectures have proven successful for recommendation problems. One limitation of such a solution is capturing the contextual relationships between the nodes in the heterogeneous network. In location recommendation, spatial context is a frequently used consideration such that users prefer to get recommendations within their spatial vicinity. To solve this challenging problem, we propose a novel Heterogeneous Information Network (HIN) embedding technique, SgWalk, which explores the proximity between users and locations and generates location recommendations via subgraph-based node embedding. SgWalk follows four steps: building users subgraphs according to location context, generating random walk sequences over user subgraphs, learning embeddings of nodes in LBSN graph, and generating location recommendations using vector representation of the nodes. SgWalk is differentiated from existing techniques relying on meta-path or bi-partite graphs by means of utilizing the contextual user subgraph. In this way, it is aimed to capture contextual relationships among heterogeneous nodes more effectively. The recommendation accuracy of SgWalk is analyzed through extensive experiments conducted on benchmark datasets in terms of top-n location recommendations. The accuracy evaluation results indicate minimum 23% (@5 recommendation) average improvement in accuracy compared to baseline techniques and the state-of-the-art heterogeneous graph embedding techniques in the literature

    HDT crypt: Compression and Encryption of RDF Datasets

    The publication and interchange of RDF datasets online has experienced significant growth in recent years, promoted by different but complementary efforts, such as Linked Open Data, the Web of Things and RDF stream processing systems. However, the current Linked Data infrastructure does not cater for the storage and exchange of sensitive or private data. On the one hand, data publishers need means to limit access to confidential data (e.g. health, financial, personal, or other sensitive data). On the other hand, the infrastructure needs to compress RDF graphs in a manner that minimises the amount of data that is both stored and transferred over the wire. In this paper, we demonstrate how HDT - a compressed serialization format for RDF - can be extended to cater for supporting encryption. We propose a number of different graph partitioning strategies and discuss the benefits and tradeoffs of each approach

    Coping with new Challenges in Clustering and Biomedical Imaging

    The last years have seen a tremendous increase of data acquisition in different scientific fields such as molecular biology, bioinformatics or biomedicine. Therefore, novel methods are needed for automatic data processing and analysis of this large amount of data. Data mining is the process of applying methods like clustering or classification to large databases in order to uncover hidden patterns. Clustering is the task of partitioning points of a data set into distinct groups in order to minimize the intra cluster similarity and to maximize the inter cluster similarity. In contrast to unsupervised learning like clustering, the classification problem is known as supervised learning that aims at the prediction of group membership of data objects on the basis of rules learned from a training set where the group membership is known. Specialized methods have been proposed for hierarchical and partitioning clustering. However, these methods suffer from several drawbacks. In the first part of this work, new clustering methods are proposed that cope with problems from conventional clustering algorithms. ITCH (Information-Theoretic Cluster Hierarchies) is a hierarchical clustering method that is based on a hierarchical variant of the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle which finds hierarchies of clusters without requiring input parameters. As ITCH may converge only to a local optimum we propose GACH (Genetic Algorithm for Finding Cluster Hierarchies) that combines the benefits from genetic algorithms with information-theory. In this way the search space is explored more effectively. Furthermore, we propose INTEGRATE a novel clustering method for data with mixed numerical and categorical attributes. Supported by the MDL principle our method integrates the information provided by heterogeneous numerical and categorical attributes and thus naturally balances the influence of both sources of information. A competitive evaluation illustrates that INTEGRATE is more effective than existing clustering methods for mixed type data. Besides clustering methods for single data objects we provide a solution for clustering different data sets that are represented by their skylines. The skyline operator is a well-established database primitive for finding database objects which minimize two or more attributes with an unknown weighting between these attributes. In this thesis, we define a similarity measure, called SkyDist, for comparing skylines of different data sets that can directly be integrated into different data mining tasks such as clustering or classification. The experiments show that SkyDist in combination with different clustering algorithms can give useful insights into many applications. In the second part, we focus on the analysis of high resolution magnetic resonance images (MRI) that are clinically relevant and may allow for an early detection and diagnosis of several diseases. In particular, we propose a framework for the classification of Alzheimer's disease in MR images combining the data mining steps of feature selection, clustering and classification. As a result, a set of highly selective features discriminating patients with Alzheimer and healthy people has been identified. However, the analysis of the high dimensional MR images is extremely time-consuming. Therefore we developed JGrid, a scalable distributed computing solution designed to allow for a large scale analysis of MRI and thus an optimized prediction of diagnosis. In another study we apply efficient algorithms for motif discovery to task-fMRI scans in order to identify patterns in the brain that are characteristic for patients with somatoform pain disorder. We find groups of brain compartments that occur frequently within the brain networks and discriminate well among healthy and diseased people

    Solid reconstruction using recognition of quadric surfaces from orthographic views

    International audienceThe reconstruction of 3D objects from 2D orthographic views is crucial for maintaining and further developing existing product designs. A B-rep oriented method for reconstructing curved objects from three orthographic views is presented by employing a hybrid wire-frame in place of an intermediate wire-frame. The Link-Relation Graph (LRG) is introduced as a multi-graph representation of orthographic views, and quadric surface features (QSFs) are defined by special basic patterns of LRG as well as aggregation rules. By hint-based pattern matching in the LRGs of three orthographic views in an order of priority, the corresponding QSFs are recognized, and the geometry and topology of quadric surfaces are recovered simultaneously. This method can handle objects with interacting quadric surfaces and avoids the combinatorial search for tracing all the quadric surfaces in an intermediate wire-frame by the existing methods.     Hawk: Rapid Android Malware Detection Through Heterogeneous Graph Attention Networks

    Android is undergoing unprecedented malicious threats daily, but the existing methods for malware detection often fail to cope with evolving camouflage in malware. To address this issue, we present Hawk, a new malware detection framework for evolutionary Android applications. We model Android entities and behavioral relationships as a heterogeneous information network (HIN), exploiting its rich semantic meta-structures for specifying implicit higher order relationships. An incremental learning model is created to handle the applications that manifest dynamically, without the need for reconstructing the whole HIN and the subsequent embedding model. The model can pinpoint rapidly the proximity between a new application and existing in-sample applications and aggregate their numerical embeddings under various semantics. Our experiments examine more than 80,860 malicious and 100,375 benign applications developed over a period of seven years, showing that Hawk achieves the highest detection accuracy against baselines and takes only 3.5 ms on average to detect an out-of-sample application, with the accelerated training time of 50x faster than the existing approach

    AVATAR - Machine Learning Pipeline Evaluation Using Surrogate Model

    © 2020, The Author(s). The evaluation of machine learning (ML) pipelines is essential during automatic ML pipeline composition and optimisation. The previous methods such as Bayesian-based and genetic-based optimisation, which are implemented in Auto-Weka, Auto-sklearn and TPOT, evaluate pipelines by executing them. Therefore, the pipeline composition and optimisation of these methods requires a tremendous amount of time that prevents them from exploring complex pipelines to find better predictive models. To further explore this research challenge, we have conducted experiments showing that many of the generated pipelines are invalid, and it is unnecessary to execute them to find out whether they are good pipelines. To address this issue, we propose a novel method to evaluate the validity of ML pipelines using a surrogate model (AVATAR). The AVATAR enables to accelerate automatic ML pipeline composition and optimisation by quickly ignoring invalid pipelines. Our experiments show that the AVATAR is more efficient in evaluating complex pipelines in comparison with the traditional evaluation approaches requiring their execution

    Efficient 3D Segmentation, Registration and Mapping for Mobile Robots

    Sometimes simple is better! For certain situations and tasks, simple but robust methods can achieve the same or better results in the same or less time than related sophisticated approaches. In the context of robots operating in real-world environments, key challenges are perceiving objects of interest and obstacles as well as building maps of the environment and localizing therein. The goal of this thesis is to carefully analyze such problem formulations, to deduce valid assumptions and simplifications, and to develop simple solutions that are both robust and fast. All approaches make use of sensors capturing 3D information, such as consumer RGBD cameras. Comparative evaluations show the performance of the developed approaches. For identifying objects and regions of interest in manipulation tasks, a real-time object segmentation pipeline is proposed. It exploits several common assumptions of manipulation tasks such as objects being on horizontal support surfaces (and well separated). It achieves real-time performance by using particularly efficient approximations in the individual processing steps, subsampling the input data where possible, and processing only relevant subsets of the data. The resulting pipeline segments 3D input data with up to 30Hz. In order to obtain complete segmentations of the 3D input data, a second pipeline is proposed that approximates the sampled surface, smooths the underlying data, and segments the smoothed surface into coherent regions belonging to the same geometric primitive. It uses different primitive models and can reliably segment input data into planes, cylinders and spheres. A thorough comparative evaluation shows state-of-the-art performance while computing such segmentations in near real-time. The second part of the thesis addresses the registration of 3D input data, i.e., consistently aligning input captured from different view poses. Several methods are presented for different types of input data. For the particular application of mapping with micro aerial vehicles where the 3D input data is particularly sparse, a pipeline is proposed that uses the same approximate surface reconstruction to exploit the measurement topology and a surface-to-surface registration algorithm that robustly aligns the data. Optimization of the resulting graph of determined view poses then yields globally consistent 3D maps. For sequences of RGBD data this pipeline is extended to include additional subsampling steps and an initial alignment of the data in local windows in the pose graph. In both cases, comparative evaluations show a robust and fast alignment of the input data
