Practical Minimum Cut Algorithms
The minimum cut problem for an undirected edge-weighted graph asks us to
divide its set of nodes into two blocks while minimizing the weight sum of the
cut edges. Here, we introduce a linear-time algorithm to compute near-minimum
cuts. Our algorithm is based on cluster contraction using label propagation and
Padberg and Rinaldi's contraction heuristics [SIAM Review, 1991]. We give both
sequential and shared-memory parallel implementations of our algorithm.
Extensive experiments on both real-world and generated instances show that our
algorithm finds the optimal cut on nearly all instances significantly faster
than other state-of-the-art algorithms while our error rate is lower than that
of other heuristic algorithms. In addition, our parallel algorithm shows good
scalability
Faster Parametric Shortest Path and Minimum Balance Algorithms
The parametric shortest path problem is to find the shortest paths in graph
where the edge costs are of the form w_ij+lambda where each w_ij is constant
and lambda is a parameter that varies. The problem is to find shortest path
trees for every possible value of lambda.
The minimum-balance problem is to find a ``weighting'' of the vertices so
that adjusting the edge costs by the vertex weights yields a graph in which,
for every cut, the minimum weight of any edge crossing the cut in one direction
equals the minimum weight of any edge crossing the cut in the other direction.
The paper presents fast algorithms for both problems. The algorithms run in
O(nm+n^2 log n) time. The paper also describes empirical studies of the
algorithms on random graphs, suggesting that the expected time for finding a
minimum-mean cycle (an important special case of both problems) is O(n log(n) +
m)
Topological Optimization of the Evaluation of Finite Element Matrices
We present a topological framework for finding low-flop algorithms for
evaluating element stiffness matrices associated with multilinear forms for
finite element methods posed over straight-sided affine domains. This framework
relies on phrasing the computation on each element as the contraction of each
collection of reference element tensors with an element-specific geometric
tensor. We then present a new concept of complexity-reducing relations that
serve as distance relations between these reference element tensors. This
notion sets up a graph-theoretic context in which we may find an optimized
algorithm by computing a minimum spanning tree. We present experimental results
for some common multilinear forms showing significant reductions in operation
count and also discuss some efficient algorithms for building the graph we use
for the optimization
Fast counting with tensor networks
We introduce tensor network contraction algorithms for counting satisfying
assignments of constraint satisfaction problems (#CSPs). We represent each
arbitrary #CSP formula as a tensor network, whose full contraction yields the
number of satisfying assignments of that formula, and use graph theoretical
methods to determine favorable orders of contraction. We employ our heuristics
for the solution of #P-hard counting boolean satisfiability (#SAT) problems,
namely monotone #1-in-3SAT and #Cubic-Vertex-Cover, and find that they

© Copyright CASA, UCL. The desire to understand and exploit the structure of continuous surfaces is common to researchers in a range of disciplines. Few examples of the varied surfaces forming an integral part of modern subjects include terrain, population density, surface atmospheric pressure, physico-chemical surfaces, computer graphics, and metrological surfaces. The focus of the work here is a group of data structures called Surface Networks, which abstract 2-dimensional surfaces by storing only the most important (also called fundamental, critical or surface-specific) points and lines in the surfaces. Surface networks are intelligent and ânatural â data structures because they store a surface as a framework of âsurface â elements unlike the DEM or TIN data structures.
