Simulation Modeling and Analysis of Adjustable Service-Rate Queueing Models that Incorporate Feedback Control
Research shows that in a system model, when the production rate is adjusted based on the number of items in queue, the nature of the model changes from an open-loop queueing system to a closed-loop feedback control system. Service-rate adjustment can be implemented in a discrete event simulation model, but the effect of this adjustment has not been thoroughly analyzed in the literature. This research considers the design of feedback signals to generate realistic simulation models of production system behavior. A series of simulation experiments is conducted to provide practical guidance for simulation modelers on how adding a service-rate adjustment feedback loop to a queueing system affects system performance
The snowball effect of customer slowdown in critical many-server systems
Customer slowdown describes the phenomenon that a customer's service
requirement increases with experienced delay. In healthcare settings, there is
substantial empirical evidence for slowdown, particularly when a patient's
delay exceeds a certain threshold. For such threshold slowdown situations, we
design and analyze a many-server system that leads to a two-dimensional Markov
process. Analysis of this system leads to insights into the potentially
detrimental effects of slowdown, especially in heavy-traffic conditions. We
quantify the consequences of underprovisioning due to neglecting slowdown,
demonstrate the presence of a subtle bistable system behavior, and discuss in
detail the snowball effect: A delayed customer has an increased service
requirement, causing longer delays for other customers, who in turn due to
slowdown might require longer service times.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures -- version 3 fixes a typo in an equation. in

A PC-based data acquisition system for sub-atomic physics measurements
Modern particle physics measurements are heavily dependent upon automated data acquisition systems (DAQ) to collect and process experiment-generated information. One research group from the University of Saskatchewan utilizes a DAQ known as the Lucid data acquisition and analysis system. This thesis examines the project undertaken to upgrade the hardware and software components of Lucid. To establish the effectiveness of the system upgrades, several performance metrics were obtained including the system's dead time and input/output bandwidth.Hardware upgrades to Lucid consisted of replacing its aging digitization equipment with modern, faster-converting Versa-Module Eurobus (VME) technology and replacing the instrumentation processing platform with common, PC hardware. The new processor platform is coupled to the instrumentation modules via a fiber-optic bridging-device, the sis1100/3100 from Struck Innovative Systems. The software systems of Lucid were also modified to follow suit with the new hardware. Originally constructed to utilize a proprietary real-time operating system, the data acquisition application was ported to run under the freely available Real-Time Executive for Multiprocessor Systems (RTEMS). The device driver software provided with sis1100/3100 interface also had to be ported for use under the RTEMS-based system. Performance measurements of the upgraded DAQ indicate that the dead time has been reduced from being on the order of milliseconds to being on the order of several tens of microseconds. This increased capability means that Lucid's users may acquire significantly more data in a shorter period of time, thereby decreasing both the statistical uncertainties and data collection duration associated with a given experiment
Connectivity Management for HetNets based on the Principles of Autonomicity and Context-Awareness
Response times in healthcare systems
It is a goal universally acknowledged that a healthcare system should treat its patients –
and especially those in need of critical care – in a timely manner. However, this is
often not achieved in practice, particularly in state-run public healthcare systems that
suffer from high patient demand and limited resources. In particular, Accident and
Emergency (A&E) departments in England have been placed under increasing pressure,
with attendances rising year on year, and a national government target whereby 98% of
patients should spend 4 hours or less in an A&E department from arrival to admission,
transfer or discharge.
This thesis presents techniques and tools to characterise and forecast patient arrivals,
to model patient flow and to assess the response-time impact of different resource
allocations, patient treatment schemes and workload scenarios.
Having obtained ethical approval to access five years of pseudonymised patient timing
data from a large case study A&E department, we present a number of time series
models that characterise and forecast daily A&E patient arrivals. Patient arrivals are
classified as one of two arrival streams (walk-in and ambulance) by mode of arrival.
Using power spectrum analysis, we find the two arrival streams exhibit different statistical
properties and hence require separate time series models. We find that structural
time series models best characterise and forecast walk-in arrivals, but that time series
analysis may not be appropriate for ambulance arrivals; this prompts us to investigate
characterisation by a non-homogeneous Poisson process.
Next we present a hierarchical multiclass queueing network model of patient flow in
our case study A&E department. We investigate via a discrete-event simulation the
impact of class and time-based priority treatment of patients, and compare the resulting
service-time densities and moments with actual data. Then, by performing bottleneck
analysis and investigating various workload and resource scenarios, we pinpoint the
resources that have the greatest impact on mean service times.
Finally we describe an approximate generating function analysis technique which efficiently
approximates the first two moments of customer response time in class-dependent
priority queueing networks with population constraints. This technique is applied to
the model of A&E and the results compared with those from simulation. We find good
agreement for mean service times especially when minors patients are given priority
