    Stability Analysis for Set-based Control within the Singularity-robust Multiple Task-priority Inverse Kinematics Framework

    Inverse kinematics algorithms are commonly used in robotic systems to accomplish desired behavior, and several methods exist to ensure the achievement of several tasks simultaneously. The multiple task-priority inverse kinematics framework allows tasks to be considered in a prioritized order by projecting task velocities through the nullspaces of higher priority tasks. This paper extends this framework to handle set-based tasks, i.e. tasks with a range of valid values, in addition to equality tasks, which have a specific desired value. Examples of such tasks are joint limit and obstacle avoidance. The proposed method is proven to ensure asymptotic convergence of the equality task errors and the satisfaction of all high-priority set-based tasks. The purpose of this paper is to further investigate and experimentally validate this algorithm and its properties. In particular, this paper presents experimental results where a number of both set-based and equality tasks have been implemented on the 6 Degree of Freedom UR5 which is an industrial robotic arm from Universal Robots.     Task-space dynamic control of underwater robots

    This thesis is concerned with the control aspects for underwater tasks performed by marine robots. The mathematical models of an underwater vehicle and an underwater vehicle with an onboard manipulator are discussed together with their associated properties. The task-space regulation problem for an underwater vehicle is addressed where the desired target is commonly specified as a point. A new control technique is proposed where the multiple targets are defined as sub-regions. A fuzzy technique is used to handle these multiple sub-region criteria effectively. Due to the unknown gravitational and buoyancy forces, an adaptive term is adopted in the proposed controller. An extension to a region boundary-based control law is then proposed for an underwater vehicle to illustrate the flexibility of the region reaching concept. In this novel controller, a desired target is defined as a boundary instead of a point or region. For a mapping of the uncertain restoring forces, a least-squares estimation algorithm and the inverse Jacobian matrix are utilised in the adaptive control law. To realise a new tracking control concept for a kinematically redundant robot, subregion tracking control schemes with a sub-tasks objective are developed for a UVMS. In this concept, the desired objective is specified as a moving sub-region instead of a trajectory. In addition, due to the system being kinematically redundant, the controller also enables the use of self-motion of the system to perform sub-tasks (drag minimisation, obstacle avoidance, manipulability and avoidance of mechanical joint limits)

    Support polygon in the hybrid legged-wheeled CENTAURO robot: modelling and control

    Search for the robot capable to perform well in the real-world has sparked an interest in the hybrid locomotion systems. The hybrid legged-wheeled robots combine the advantages of the standard legged and wheeled platforms by switching between the quick and efficient wheeled motion on the flat grounds and the more versatile legged mobility on the unstructured terrains. With the locomotion flexibility offered by the hybrid mobility and appropriate control tools, these systems have high potential to excel in practical applications adapting effectively to real-world during locomanipuation operations. In contrary to their standard well-studied counterparts, kinematics of this newer type of robotic platforms has not been fully understood yet. This gap may lead to unexpected results when the standard locomotion methods are applied to hybrid legged-wheeled robots. To better understand mobility of the hybrid legged-wheeled robots, the model that describes the support polygon of a general hybrid legged-wheeled robot as a function of the wheel angular velocities without assumptions on the robot kinematics or wheel camber angle is proposed and analysed in this thesis. Based on the analysis of the developed support polygon model, a robust omnidirectional driving scheme has been designed. A continuous wheel motion is resolved through the Inverse Kinematics (IK) scheme, which generates robot motion compliant with the Non-Sliding Pure-Rolling (NSPR) condition. A higher-level scheme resolving a steering motion to comply with the non-holonomic constraint and to tackle the structural singularity is proposed. To improve the robot performance in presence to the unpredicted circumstances, the IK scheme has been enhanced with the introduction of a new reactive support polygon adaptation task. To this end, a novel quadratic programming task has been designed to push the system Support Polygon Vertices (SPVs) away from the robot Centre of Mass (CoM), while respecting the leg workspace limits. The proposed task has been expressed through the developed SPV model to account for the hardware limits. The omnidirectional driving and reactive control schemes have been verified in the simulation and hardware experiments. To that end, the simulator for the CENTAURO robot that models the actuation dynamics and the software framework for the locomotion research have been developed

    A Unified Task Priority Control Framework Design for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    In this thesis, we investigate the problem of bringing various behaviours of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles under a common control framework. Thereby, we propose a unified guidance and control framework for AUVs based on the task priority control approach. This incorporate various behaviors such as path following, terrain following, obstacle avoidance, as well as homing and docking to stationary and moving docking stations. The integration of homing and docking maneuvers into the task priority framework is thus a novel contribution of this thesis. This integration allows, for example, to execute homing maneuvers close to uneven seafloor or obstacles, ensuring the safety of the AUV by giving the highest priority to the safety tasks. Furthermore, the proposed approach tackles a wide range of scenarios without ad hoc solutions. Indeed, the proposed approach is well suited for both the emerging trend of resident AUVs, which stay underwater for a long period inside garage stations, exiting to perform inspection and maintenance missions and homing back to them, and for AUVs that are required to dock to moving stations such as surface vehicles, or towed docking stations. The proposed techniques are further studied in a simulation setting, taking into account the rich number of aforementioned scenarios

    Self-motion control of kinematically redundant robot manipulators

Redundancy can be defined as sensor/actuator redundancy or kinematic redundancy. The redundancy considered in this thesis is the kinematic redundancy where the total degrees-of-freedom of the robot is more than the total degrees-of-freedom required for the task to be executed. This provides infinite number of solutions to perform the same task, thus, various subtasks can be carried out during the main-task execution. This work utilizes the property of self-motion for kinematically redundant robot manipulators by designing the general subtask controller that controls the joint motion in the null-space of the Jacobian matrix. The general subtask controller is implemented for various subtasks in this thesis. Minimizing the total joint motion, singularity avoidance, posture optimization for static impact force objectives, which include maximizing/minimizing the static impact force magnitude, and static and moving obstacle (point to point) collision avoidance are the subtasks considered in this thesis. New control architecture is developed to accomplish both the main-task and the previously mentioned subtasks. In this architecture, objective function for each subtask is formed. Then, the gradient of the objective function is used in the subtask controller to execute subtask objective while tracking a given end-effector trajectory. The tracking of the end-effector is called main-task. The SCHUNK LWA4-Arm robot arm with seven degrees-of-freedom is developed first in SolidWorks® as a computer-aided-design (CAD) model. Then, the CAD model is converted to MATLAB® Simulink model using SimMechanics CAD translator to be used in the simulation tests of the controller. Kinematics and dynamics equations of the robot are derived to be used in the controllers. Simulation test results are presented for the kinematically redundant robot manipulator operating in 3D space carrying out the main-task and the selected subtasks for this study. The simulation test results indicate that the developed controller’s performance is successful for all the main-task and subtask objectives

    A Novel Practical Technique to Integrate Inequality Control Objectives and Task Transitions in Priority Based Control

    The task priority based control is a formalism which allows to create complex control laws with nice invariance properties, i.e. lower priority tasks do not affect the execution of higher priority ones. However, the classical task priority framework (Siciliano and Slotine) lacked the ability of enabling and disabling tasks without causing discontinuities. Furthermore, tasks corresponding to inequality control objectives could not be efficiently represented within that framework. In this paper we present a novel technique to integrate both the activation and deactivation of tasks and the inequality control objectives in the priority based control. The technique, called iCAT (inequality control objectives, activations and transitions) task priority framework, exploits novel regularization methods to activate and deactivate any row of a given task in a prioritized hierarchy without incurring in practical discontinuities, while maintaining as much as possible the invariance properties of the other active tasks. Finally, as opposed to other techniques, the proposed approach has a linear cost in the number of tasks. Simulations, experimental results and a time analysis are presented to support the proposed technique
