    Proposal for a EU quality label for aerospace education

    The paper presents a possible roadmap for the definition of a European quality label for aerospace related higher education degrees. The proposal is the result of a two-years long Horizon 2020 project that has involved a great portion of the European stakeholders in aerospace: Universities, research centres, industries (both small and large) networks, associations and accreditation agencies. The core concept established is that it is possible to establish a sector-specific, content based, quality system, that can complement the existing national or European accreditation systems, providing added value to the internal and/or external quality assurance processes that are in place in most EU countries. The tools and processes proposed are sufficiently simple to be manageable by Universities in addition to their national accreditation processes or as stand-alone assessment. The main goal of the proposed process is the evaluation of the quality of the aerospace curricula in the European context, whereas the accreditation of the programme can be seen as an optional extension of the process, subject to further national regulations. The process is proposed in view of the awarding of a sector-specific, content based, quality label, to be issued by an appropriate legally recognized and qualified institution. 8 field tests with volunteering universities throughout Europe have been performed.     A Web-Shareable Real-World Imaging Problem for Enhancing an Image-Processing Curriculum

    A real-world laboratory exercise is presented for image processing and related curricula. The exercise is a traffic-monitoring problem in which a truck must be tracked as it moves across a bridge and its velocity measured. Sequential images are taken from a dedicated Web camera that views the Smart Composite Bridge on the University of Missouri-Rolla campus. The prototype bridge is a field laboratory for several interdisciplinary courses, including a Machine Vision elective. The Machine Vision image-processing elective uses the traffic-monitoring exercise to give students experience with processing complex images, tracking image markers, and applying theoretical orthographic concepts. The laboratory exercise uses an image sequence acquired during the springtime with multiple potential markers available on the truck for assignment flexibility. A wintertime image sequence with snowy conditions is also available for assignment flexibility. This paper discusses the bridge and camera resources, the traffic-monitoring laboratory exercise description, and the Machine Vision course implementation and evaluation.     In university programs and curricula, in general we react to the need to meet market needs. We respond to market stimulus, or at least try to do so. Consider now an inverted view. Consider our data and perspectives in university programs as reflecting and indeed presaging economic trends. In this article I pursue this line of thinking. I show how various past events fit very well into this new view.     Public policies have actively responded to an emergent social and neuroscientific evidence base documenting the benefits of targeting services to children during the earliest period of their development. But problems of low utilization, inconsistent participation, and low retention continue to present themselves as challenges. Although most interventions recognize and address structural and psycho-social barriers to parent’s engagement, few take seriously the decision making roles of parents. Using insights from the behavioral sciences, we revisit assumptions about the presumed behavior of parents in a developmental context. We then describe ways in which this framework informs features of interventions that can be designed to augment the intended impacts of early development, education and care initiatives by improving parent engagement

    A planning and feasibility study to identify and document a methodology needed to incorporate educational programs into future missions and operations of the space transportation system was conducted. Six tasks were identified and accomplished during the study. The task statements are as follows: (1) potential user identification, (2) a review of space education programs, (3) development of methodology for user involvement, (4) methods to encourage user awareness, (5) compilation of follow-on ideas, and (6) response to NASA questions. Specific recommendations for improving the educational coverage of space activities are provided

    An Examination Of The Current State Of Accounting Information Systems Education

    This paper reviews several factors that drive the need for a closer examination of accounting information systems (AIS) education and provides an assessment of the current state of AIS education in the US. The assessment draws from two separate sets of guidelines for AIS education, published by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Information Systems Audit and Control Association. These guidelines are used because they were developed by professionals in the field, with input from academics, and represent publicly available, coherent attempts to identify a body of AIS knowledge for accountants and auditors. We surveyed undergraduate and masters programs offered in all accounting departments with separate AACSB-accounting accreditation. Our survey found very few degree programs or concentrations in AIS as well as a considerable amount of diversity among existing programs.  Consistent with Christensen’s innovation dilemma (1997), we speculate that the traditional absence of a focused, coherent attempt to develop and promote accounting information systems as an academic discipline may be one of the critical factors that contributes to the slow diffusion of AIS programs in business school

    Analyzing DNA Sequences Using Clustering Algorithm

    Data mining gives a bright prospective in DNA sequences analysis through its concepts and techniques. This study carries out exploratory data analysis method to cluster DNA sequences.Feature vectors have been developed to map the DNA sequences to a twelve-dimensional vector in the space. Lysozyme, Myoglobin and Rhodopsin protein families have been tested in this space. The results of DNA sequences comparison among homologous sequences give close distances between their characterization vectors which are easily distinguishable from non-homologous in experiment it with a fixed DNA sequence size that does not exceed the maximum length of the shortest DNA sequence. Global comparison for multiple DNA sequences simultaneously presented in the genomic space is the main advantage of this work by applying direct comparison of the corresponding characteristic vectors distances. The novelty of this work is that for the new DNA sequence, there is no need to compare the new DNA sequence with the whole DNA sequences length, just the comparison focused on a fixed number of all the sequences in a way that does not exceed the maximum length of the new DNA sequence. In other words, parts of the DNA sequence can identify the functionality of the DNA sequence, and make it clustered with its family members

    Toward an integrated conceptualization of the service and service system concepts: a systems approach

    Service and service systems concepts are fundamental constructs for the development of the emergent SSME, ITSM, and Service Oriented Software (SOS) knowledge streams. A diversified literature has provided a richness of findings, but at the same time, the lack of standardized conceptualizations is a source of confusion to IT practitioners and academics. Given this problematic situation, we pose that a systems approach is useful to address it. In this article, we review and synthesize key studies in these knowledge streams to design: (i) a framework to characterize both concepts under a system view and, (ii) harmonized definitions (e.g. identification of shared and essential properties) for such fundamental concepts. Our main contribution is scholastic, but we are confident that the posed conceptual artifacts can be further used to elaborate standardized definition for the IT service and IT service system constructs, as well as analysis tools for describe real service systems
